One morning,in addition to his usual lunch bag, Molly handed him a second paper bag. This one was worn and held together with staples(书钉).“Why two bags?” her father asked. “The other is something else” Molly answered.“What’s in it?” “Just some stuff.Take it with you.” Not wanting to discuss the matter, he put both sacks(bags) into his briefcase, kissed Molly and rushed off.At midday he opened Molly’s bag and took out the contents:two hair ribbons, three small stones,a plastic dinosaur,a tiny sea shell,a small doll, and 13 pennies...The busy father smiled, finished eating, and swept the desk clean into the wastebasket, Molly’s stuff included. That evening,Molly ran up behind him as he read the paper.”Where’s my bag?” “What bag?” “The one I gave you this morning” “I left it at the office, why ?” “I forgot to put this note in it” she said. “And,besides,Daddy, the things in the sack are the things I really like.I thought you might like to play with them. You didn’t lose the bag,did you,Daddy?” “Oh,no” he said, lying. “I just forgot to bring it home.I’ll bring it back tomorrow” While Molly hugged her father’s neck,he unfolded the note that read” I love you,Daddy.” Molly had given him her treasures-all that a 7-year-old held dear. Love in a paper bag,and he missed it-not only missed it, but had thrown it in the wastebasket. So back he went to the office. Just ahead of the night janitor(看门人), he picked up the bag from the wastebasket. He put the treasures inside and carried it home carefully. The bag didn't look so good, but the stuff was all there and that’s what counted. After dinner, he asked Molly to tell him about the stuff in the sack. It took a long time to tell. Everything had a story or a memory. “Sometimes I think of all the great times in this sweet life,” he thought. We should all remember that it’s not the destination that counts in life, but the journey. That journey with the people we love is all that really matters. It is such a simple truth but it is so easily forgotten. 21.What did Molly give her father a second bag for? A.She didn’t want to keep the things in the bag. The snow was extremely heavy and there was lots of ice on the ground --- not many people had ventured out that evening! When I returned to my car around 11.pm, I noticed that I was the only car left. Nervously, I hopped into the car and let it warm up a bit. When I finally tried to drive away, my wheels began to spin. I was stuck! I spun and spun and wondered what to do. All of a sudden, in my rear view mirror, I saw four teen-aged boys approaching my car. They were walking side by side in a line and dressed a bit like gang members --- at least I thought that's what they looked like. My car was in a very isolated area and I began to panic. I was certain they were coming to my car to harm me. Terrified, I just froze. One of the young men tapped on my window and said "Excuse me, Ma'am, can we help you? You seem stuck." Still afraid and fearing the worst, I said "I am stuck." And the young man said "It's okay, stay in your car and we'll push you out of the snow." And they did! Think twice before you do D Babies born in summer are more likely to become short-sighted in late life, a study has shown. As many as a quarter of all cases of short-sightedness are caused by too great an exposure to sunlight in the first weeks of life, say eye experts. They are advising all parents to put sunglasses on their babies during the first weeks. Scientists had already established that over-exposure to sunlight caused shortsightedness in animals. Researchers who compared the months in which babies were born with whether they needed glasses later on say the principle also applies to humans. A study of almost 300,000 young adults---the largest of its kind showed that those born in June and July had a 25 per cent greater chance of becoming severely short-sighted than those born in December or January. Research leader Professor Michael Belkin of Tel Aviv University, said it was because prolonged illumination(光照) causes the eyeball to lengthen, causing short-sightedness. Therefore, the more light a newborn is exposed to, the more the eyeball lengthens and the worse the short-sightedness will be. The mechanism which lengthens the eyeball is associated with levels of melatonin(褪黑激素), a pigment (色素) which protects the skin against harmful rays of the sun. In young babies not enough melatonin is released as protection, meaning they are more vulnerable to sunburn and changes to eyeball shape. Sight expert Professor Daniel O’Leary, of Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, said “At the moment we don’t know the precise cause of why light exposure affects sight, but the evidence seems to prove that it is one of the reasons for people becoming shortsighted.” 32. Babies born in summer are more likely to be shortsighted ____________. A. because the summer sun is too strong for babies B. because babies who are born in summer have lengthened eyeballs C. if exposed to much sunlight in the first weeks after they are born D. if parents don’t know a proper way to protect their babies’ eyes 33. Melatonin is a kind of material to ___________. A. prevent the eyes from becoming near-sighted B. protect the skin from harmful sun rays C. make our body strong D. protect babies’ eyes from summer sun 34. From what Professor Daniel O’Leary says we can conclude that ___________. A. there is no evidence that shortsightedness is related to exposure to sunlight B. whether light exposure affects sight still needs to be further proved C. he believes that light exposure can cause shortsightedness D. he tries to give the cause of why light exposure affects sight 35. Focus your attention on the materials you are studying. Attention is one of the major components (组成部分) of memory.
