B Having just finished high school. I wasn't sure what I wanted to study in higher education, so I decided to take a gap year to figure that out. One of my biggest passions has always been Africa and I have always wanted to do some kind of volunteering. However,I was afraid that, especially when it comes to volunteering in research. Both cheetahs are wearing a GPS-collar from which I can download a lot of information including where the cheetah has been, what the weather was like and how far the cheetah travelled. Having organized and categorized the information, I have been able to create some very interesting graphs. Even though it is quite difficult since I've never done any research like this, I really enjoy all the challenges and problems I have had to face and solve. Citizens and businesses are required to sort their waste into separate bins. The task is onerous: Shanghai produces more than 9 million tons of trash every year and it lacks even a basic recycling system. As far back as 2000, the Chinese government foresaw this problem and chose eight cities, including Shanghai, to pilot(试行)trash recycling programs. They all failed completely. Not only did the cities lack the equipment and facilities to recycle, but people were given no education about why it was so important. This ignorance continues. A 2018 survey of 3,600 citizens from major Chinese cities found that nearly three-quarters could not identify how to properly sort their trash for recycling. Regardless, the government is trying again. In Shanghai, citizens are required to sort their trash into four separate categories: food waste, recyclables, dangerous wastes (such as batteries and light bulbs) and"residual wastes” (which include everything from floor sweepings to clay product). Citizens can only throw away waste during certain hours, ensuring that neighbors will see who is and who isn't sorting properly. They must throw food waste into public bins without using bags, so everyone can also see what they're throwing away. Fines of up to 200 yuan, roughly $30, await those who don't sort. At the same time, Shanghai has spent weeks using every possible propaganda(宣传)tool, from social media to local and even national newspapers, to explain how and why citizens should recycle. On Sina Weibo, China's Twitter-like social media service, the subject has repeatedly trended. Younger Chinese seem to have favorable opinions of the program, though they fear it will be time-consuming. It's a lesson to other developing countries that the first step in creating a modern waste management system is to educate the public and develop a sense that recycling is a collective(集体的)responsibility. Now, scientists in Scotland have proved that with some vocal training, the talented animals also can imitate the human language.
