He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata(奏鸣曲)by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him. Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable. They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn’t even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music. Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me ---I hear the notes and can bear them in mind---each and every note,” says Samuel. Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can’t play it. Samuel says confidently, “It’s all about super memory---I guess I have that gift.” However, Samuel’s ability to remember things doesn’t stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word. Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies. 1. What is special about Samuel Osmond? A. You get up in the morning and look into the mirror. Your face is firm and young-looking. In 2035, medical technology is better than ever. Many people your age could live to be 150, so at 40, you're not old at all. And your parents just had an anti-aging(抗衰老的) treatment. Now, all three of you look the same age! You say to your shirt,“ Turn red.” It changes from blue to red. In 2035, “smart clothes” contain particles(粒子) much smaller than the cells in your body. The particles can be programmed to change your clothes' color or pattern. You walk into the kitchen. You pick up the milk, but a voice says ,“ You shouldn't drink that!” Your fridge has read the chip (芯片) that contains information about the milk , and it knows the milk is old . In 2035, every article of food in the grocery store has such a chip. It's time to go to work. In 2035, cars drive themselves. Just tell your “smart car” where to go. On the way, you can call a friend using your jacket sleeve. Such “smart technology” is all around you. So will all these things come true? “For new technology to succeed,” says scientist Andrew Zolli,“ it has to be so much better that it replaces what we have already.” The Internet is one example—what will be the next? 10. We can learn from the text that in the future ________. A.Everyone will look the same. B.People will never get old. C.Clothes will be able to change their pattern. D.Red will be the most popular color. 11. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4? A.Milk will be harmful to health. B.More drinks will be available for sale. C.Milk in the grocery store will stay fresh much longer. D.Food in the grocery store will carry electronic information. 12. What is the text mainly about? A. Future technology in everyday life. B. The reason for the success of new technology. C. Medical treatments of the future. D. Food and clothing in 2035. D Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately: the air you breathe. Previous studies have linked high exposure (暴露)to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problems, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or stroke (中风)within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one review of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants (污染物)were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure. A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers to be of “moderate” (良好)quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure. The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health. 13. The text mainly discusses the relationship between ________. A.heart problems and exercising B.heart problems and air quality C.heart problems and smoking D.heart problems and fatty food 14. The underlined word “modest” in Paragraph 3 most probably means________. A.relatively low B.extremely high C.relatively high D.extremely low 15. The author's purpose of writing the text is most likely to ________. A.describe B.entertain C.inform D.persuade 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Forgiveness To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research. 16 Try the following steps: Calm yourself. 17 You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love. Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. 18 Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you. Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about you hurt gives power to the person who caused your pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you. 19 If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view. Don’t forget to forgive yourself. 20 But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it. A.How should you start to forgive? B.Why should you forgive? C.Recognize the benefits of forgiveness. D.For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge. E.Try to see things from you offender’s angle. F.If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time. G.To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique. 第二部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 On August 26, 1999, New York City was struck by a terrible rainstorm. When we felt ,we went out and had lunch. After lunch,we visited some old and learned more about Chinese history. Dear Li Hua, I am glad that you didn’t cheat in examinations. What you have done is right ,even through your performance may not be so pleasing. It is universally acknowledged that cheating in studies has bad effects on our personal development, which suggests our total lack of honesty. What some of your classmates did is completely wrong, despite the fact that they might feel self-satisfied with the minor false success. If they are not aware of the mistakes, they will undoubtedly lose in time. As for your parents, you might just as well share your ideas with them, trying to get their understanding and encouragement. From my point of view, we are supposed to focus on adequate preparations before examinations. As you know, we take various examinations to test how well we have learned and then make necessary adjustments. Therefore, we can benefit more from honest scores rather than cheating in examinations. What does matter is that we should be brave to face setbacks and challenges. To end this, I really hope that you will work hard and make scientific preparations in advance, and wish you every success in future. Yours sincerely Wang lei查看更多
