Milne Winnie-the-Pooh has been introduced and reintroduced to generation after generation as a model of a child‘s best friend. However, not everyone has found Pooh is lovely. This classic has been banned in a variety of countries at one point. So why would anyone ever want to keep children from the joy of Milne‘s classic? In the case of Russia, Winnie-the-Pooh was banned in 2009 because of alleged Nazi (纳粹党的) ties.‎ The Wonderful Wizard of Oz By Frank Baum Originally published in the year 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is one of the foundations of the fairytale genre. Who, then, would seek to ban a book that has become so important to the American experience?‎ America is that who. The Detroit Library banned The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1957 for having no value for children.‎ Charlotte’s Web By E. B. White White‘s tale of the relationship between two unexpected creatures, a spider and a pig, has been drawing children in for over half a century. Published in 1952, this classic has been readily available on most library shelves for children to read. However, some people would like to make this book never see the light of day.‎ In one extreme case, a school in England banned Charlotte’s Web for fear that the pig Wilbur might be offensive (冒犯的) to Muslim students. Fortunately, the Muslim Council of Britain saw the foolishness of this ban, so the book was quickly restored to its right place on the shelves.‎ Where the Wild Things Are By Maurice Sendak Though its first copy was published fifty years ago, this book hasn‘t always been readily available in libraries and in stores. He started Mother‘s Day ‎– May 10 – by surprising his mother at her work with his two brothers.‎ The week before his challenge started, he had won some money, so on Day Two he donated some of his winnings to a local disability organisation in Horsham, Victoria. On Day Three he left money in an envelope at the laundromat (自助洗衣店) with the words, ―The next one is on me‖. Later that day, the local district was hit by strong winds so he cleaned out his elderly neighbour‘s gutters (排水沟) on Day Four.‎ Dom manages a retirement village and on Day Five he visited some former residents who had moved to a nursing home. Trading in his car keys for a bicycle helmet on Day Six was Dom‘s way of being kind to the environment, and then on Day Seven he took his grandmother on a road trip to three different towns so she could visit the graves of loved ones she hadn‘t visited.‎ On Day Eight he spent the morning down at the nearby Wimmera River where he picked up rubbish that was littering the shore. He drove 200km to the closest blood bank in Ballarat to make his first blood donation on Day Nine and then on Day Ten bought a lottery ticket, and put it in an envelope before dropping it into the letterbox of a random house.‎ On Day Eleven my daughter and I found ourselves stuck in a supermarket car park with a flat battery. I called Dom, who came to our rescue with smile, and successfully jump-started the car so we could get home.‎ Day Twelve‘s act of kindness was volunteering at Meals on Wheels to help deliver dinners to people in the community who need extra support.‎ And so Dom‘s kindness continued for another nine days – helping friends move house, delivering flowers to nurses at the local hospital, washing his aunt‘s car and stopping by his grandparents to help out in their garden are just some of the kind things he did.‎ Dom took up this challenge because he had been through some difficult times after a relationship breakup. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he turned a negative into a positive and I can honestly say that it has been contagious!‎ 17. What does the underlined phrase ―a flat battery‖ mean?‎ A. Helping Others Means helping ourselves C Violin prodigies (神童), I learned, have come in distinct waves from distinct regions. Most of the great performers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were born and brought up in Russia and Eastern Europe. I asked Isaac Stern, one of the world‘s greatest violinists the reason for this phenomenon. ―It is very clear,‖ he told me. ―They were all Jews and Jews at the time were severely oppressed and ill-treated in that part of the world. They were not allowed into the professional fields, but they were allowed to achieve excellence on a concert stage.‖ As a result, every Jewish parent‘s dream was to have a child in the music school because it was a passport to the West.‎ Another element in the emergence of prodigies, I found, is a society that values excellence in a certain field to nurture (培育) talent. Nowadays, the most nurturing societies seem to be in the Far East. ―In Japan, a most competitive society, with stronger discipline than ours,‖ says Isaac ‎ Stern, children are ready to test their limits every day in many fields, including music. When Western music came to Japan after World War II, that music not only became part of their daily lives, but it became a discipline as well. The Koreans and Chinese as we know, are just as highly motivated as the Japanese.‎ That‘s a good thing, because even prodigies must work hard. Next to hard work, biological inheritance(遗传) plays an important role in the making of a prodigy. J. S. Bach, for example,‎ was the top of several generations of musicians, and four of his sons had significant careers in music.‎ 17. Jewish parents in Eastern Europe longed for their children to attend music school because ‎ .‎ A. it would allow them access to a better life in the West B. Jewish children are born with excellent musical talent C. they wanted their children to enter into the professional field D. it would enable the family to get better treatment in their own country 18. Nurturing societies as mentioned in the passage refer to societies that .‎ A. are highly motivated in the education of music B. treasure talent and provide opportunities for its full development C. encourage people to compete with each other D. promise talented children high positions 19. Which of the following contributes to the emergence of musical prodigies according to the passage?‎ A. a natural gift. B. extensive knowledge of music.‎ C. very early training. D. a prejudice-free society.‎ 20. Which of the following titles best summarizes the main idea of the passage?‎ A. Jewish Contribution to Music B. Training of Musicians in the World C. Music and Society D. The Making of Music Prodigies D You can't always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That's why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain-‎ sensing umbrella.‎ The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in ‎ Russia.‎ ‎―Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞篷)built into a street lamp,‖ he said.‎ The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors(传感器)then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.‎ In addition to the rain sensor, there's also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.‎ According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed(安装) at 2‎ meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.‎ While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.‎ 17. For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?‎ A. To predict a heavy rain.‎ B. To check the weather forecast.‎ C. To protect people from the rain.‎ D. To remind people to take an umbrella.‎ ‎33.What do we know from Belyaev's words in Paragraph 2?‎ A. His creation was inspired by an experience.‎ B. It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.‎ C. Street lamps are protected by canopies.‎ D. He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.‎ ‎34.What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the Lampbrella?‎ A. Its moving speed. B. Its appearance.‎ C. Its installation. D. Its safety.‎ ‎35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?‎ A. The designer will open a company to promote his product.‎ B. The Lampbrella could be put into immediate production.‎ C. The designer is confident that his creation is practical.‎ A. The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.‎ 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。‎ Five ways to end procrastination Never put off till tomorrow what may be done today. Waiting until later is one of life‘s guilty secrets, but procrastination (拖延症) is linked to poorer health, work and relationship outcomes. Here are five ways to try to remedy (纠正) procrastination.:‎ 1. A five-minute start Five minutes is nothing — it‘s just three hundred seconds. It‘s the length of a song or a TV commercial. Pick up a project you‘ve been putting off and spare just 300 seconds of your time to do it. 36 After a while, the momentum (动力) of beginning the task will push you forward.‎ 2. Set goals and rewards During the day, set goals and rewards. Each time you achieve a goal, you earn the reward: a short break, a funny YouTube video or something else. 37 Make sure you select a time to review your progress and adjust your targets accordingly.‎ 3. Be good to yourself — me today versus me tomorrow Sometimes, when you find yourself buried in work, you are upset with yourself for not having started earlier. Imagine a conversation, between ―you today‖ and ―you tomorrow‖. 38 ‎ 4. I was there — witnessing accountability (责任制)‎ ‎ 39 Consider going on a diet: Is there more pressure if you don‘t tell a soul, or if you announce it to all your friends, with strict rules to follow if you are invited to dinner? It seems an obvious way of making you feel guilty, but it can also be highly effective.‎ 1. Set creative punishments — negative consequences Make the consequences of inaction so unbearable that you have no choice but to get busy now. You could write a note to someone that you don‘t like. Give the note to a friend with strict instructions to mail the note if you do not achieve your goal. The more you dislike the other party, the stronger the motivation to get the task done.‎ Procrastination is a silent killer of dreams. 40 By understanding and fixing your procrastination, you‘ll discover you jump-start many areas of your life.‎ A. Everyone suffers from it.‎ B. Once the five minutes is up, stop and reassess.‎ C. Everyone likes to have a dream of procrastination.‎ D. Going public with a goal increases your support and accountability.‎ E. What is the future of my life with the intention of putting off my tasks?‎ F. If ―you tomorrow‖ could chat with ―you today‖ what would he say?‎ G. It‘s important that the goals are realistic and the rewards are in proportion (按比例).‎ 第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分 45 分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共 20 小题;每小题 1. 5 分,满分 30 分) ‎ 阅读下面的短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中,选出可以填入 空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ This is a story about Yesenia Diosdado, a girl of 11, who helped victims of a car accident using sign language.‎ On a cold afternoon in January 2015, Yesenia Diosdado, 41 a school bus in Lenexa, Kansas, near the apartment building 42 she lives with her family.
