The night before I was to leave, I decided a warm bath would help me sleep. I twisted the hot water handle on the tub (浴缸) and waited. I complained,“Let me have some warm water!" It took forever for the hot water to work its way through the pipes to the back of the house. Needless to say, the bath wasn't relaxing. The next afternoon, I arrived in Honduras. After the conference, my friend took me to meet some of her family members. They lived in a stick-and-mud house and slept on dirt floors. The women cooked outside on the stove. Still, even in these awful conditions, everyone I met had a smile on his or her face. They were so generous and almost always insisted we stay for coffee. On our way to one home we passed a pond which was covered with green slime (粘液). One woman pushed the slime back with a stick while the other put the water into a bucket. I prayed, “Please don't let them offer coffee."” After we were invited in, a little girl ran inside. She held a mango in each hand. The one in her left hand was half eaten. This little beauty held out her right hand and offered me the other mango, which I gladly accepted. Her eyes danced. I remember thinking, "She has no idea that she is poor.” When it was time to leave, we walked outside and I noticed a muddy stream that ran beside their home. My friend said, “That is where they bathe. It is also where the animals drink and they push out waste.” The evening I returned home I went into my perfect bathroom and twisted the hot water handle. While bathing, I thought of this simple pleasure. Clean water wasn't my right; it was luck. 21. According to Para. 2, after the bath the author felt a little __________. A disappointed B. relaxed C nervous D. guilty 22. By referring to the little girl, the author seems to __________. A. criticize the unfair treatment of local children B. appreciate the good education of local children C recommend the local mangoes to readers D show sympathy for the lovely but poor girl 23. What did the author learn from her experience in Honduras? A. Honduras is a country short of clean water B. People should value the simple pleasures in life C. It is everybody's right to live a comfortable life D. Offering guests coffee is a custom in Honduras B Imagine yourself sitting in a cafe in your hometown one day, when you hear some people at the next table speaking English with a strong North American accent. Being a friendly person, you lean over and say, “Hi! Are you American?” “No,” the answer comes immediately, “Canadian!” Calling an English-speaking Canadian an American can be as bad as telling a Scotsman that he's English or telling a Swiss person he's German. “No,” many Canadians will tell you firmly, “we're not Americans; we're Canadians!" In the same way as Quebecers are determined to keep their identity in the country, Canadians from the other provinces are determined to keep Canada's identity. Although the Canadian way of life is more and more like the American lifestyle, lots of details are different. Canadians use meters and kilometers and measure temperatures in Celsius; Americans use feet and miles and measure temperatures in Fahrenheit. The USA has states, but Canada has provinces. Yet, about 80% of Canadians live within 150km of the US border, and this has had a bad influence on the Canadian economy. Like most European countries, Canada has a national health service and a good social security system, but good welfare services have to be paid for by high taxes, so the cost of living in Canada is high. Because of this, hundreds of thousands of Canadians often get in their cars and drive to the USA for shopping. This is one cause of economic problems in Canada. Over half of Canada’s imports come from the United States. However, the American influence is not just a question of shopping. There is television too. While Quebecers tend to watch their own French-language TV programs, English-speaking Canadians have a choice among local English-speaking channels, national programs, and dozens of American channels. Unless they especially want to watch local programs, they’ll probably turn to one of the big American channels. Perhaps it is not surprising that many Canadians are afraid that their country will soon be just like another part of the USA. They feel it is a real risk and want to keep Canada's identity. 21. What do the first two paragraphs mainly tell us? A. Do not speak with strangers in a cafe B. Mind your words when talking to Canadians C. English is a widely spoken language in Canada D. Canadians are unhappy at being mistaken for Americans. 22. Why do many Canadians prefer to go shopping in the USA? A. Because they can get better services there B. Because they do not have to pay tax there C. Because most of Canada's imports come from there D. Because they can buy things at lower prices there 23. According to the passage, many Canadians _________. A. can’t have a friendly relationship with Americans B. can't tell the differences between Canada and the USA C. don't want their differences from Americans to disappear D. worry about their survival under the influence of the USA C When something looks interesting or beautiful, people feel a natural impulse (冲动) to capture and preserve it-- which means, in this day and age, that were likely to reach for our phones to take a picture. Though this would seem to be an ideal solution, there are two big problems associated with taking pictures. Firstly, we’re likely to be so busy taking the pictures that we forget to look at the world whose beauty and interest prompt us to take a photograph in the first place. And secondly, because we feel the pictures are safely stored on our phones, we never get around to looking at them. In fact these problems were noticed right at the beginning of the history of photography. The first person to notice them was the English art critic, John Ruskin. He was a keen traveler who realized that most tourists made a poor job of noticing or remembering the beautiful things they saw. He argued that humans have an innate (天生的) tendency to respond to beauty and wish to have it, but there are better and worse expressions of this strong wish. At worst, we get into buying souvenirs or taking photographs. In Ruskin’s eyes, there’s one thing we should do-- attempt to draw the interesting things we see, even if we happen to have no talent for doing so. Ruskin said, “Drawing can teach us to see: to notice properly rather than gaze absentmindedly (茫然地). In the process of recreating with our own hands what lies before our eyes, we naturally move from a position of observing beauty in a loose way to one where we acquire a deep understanding of its parts.” Ruskin disapproved the blindness and hurry of modern tourists, especially those who prided themselves on traveling around Europe in a week by train. In fact, there is always more in the world than men can see. The really precious things are thought and sight, not pace. If he be truly a man, his gory is not at all in gong, but in being. 27. By taking pictures with phones, we are more likely to __________. A. appreciate the pictures later B. store good memories in our minds C. understand the beautiful things well D. fail to appreciate something attractive 28. How should travelers express their desire for beauty according to Ruskin? A. Visit it frequently B. Observe its photos repeatedly C. Paint a picture of it attentively D. Purchase souvenirs of it generously. 29. What are the modern tourists proud of? A. The glory to be called true men. B. The advanced transport they have used C. The blindness and hurry of their journey. D. The long distance they have covered in a short time 30. What does the passage advise us to do when traveling? A. Learn how to control desires B. Improve the skills of drawing C Prepare well before setting out D. Slow down and enjoy the beautiful things 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分) Ways to love your life Whenever you feel like giving up, that is the very moment you should not. We all have our ups and downs in our lives. But how we handle every circumstance determines the course of our life. 31 ● Appreciate the positive side. As much as everything happens for a reason, wallowing (沉迷) in sadness will not change anything at all. When you finally learn to see the goodness in everything, life becomes so much better. You will only live once. 32 Be stronger than you believe you are. ● Take chances in every opportunity. Opportunities in our lives only come once. If you keep on calculating whether you will fail or succeed, you might run out of time and lose your chance. 33 Every time you take chances, you boost your confidence and dare to cross your limits. You go out of your comfort zone and make wise decisions. There are no failures for those who tried their best. ● Laugh your heart out. They say laughter is the best medicine and it is always true because laughing fights away stress and makes you love life even more. 34 It also makes you look younger than your age. You laugh at the simplest things because you find beauty in your life. ● 35 Stop comparing your life with others’. You have a good life that is definitely different from theirs. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he found that he only had one dime(一角硬币) left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn’t eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while “Would you please give me some … a drink of water?” the boy dare not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point. Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation(会诊). When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room. 注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2. 应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词; 3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; 4. 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词。 Paragraph 1: Dressed in his doctor’s gown(长袍) he went in to see her. ________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The bill was sent to her room. ______________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ 参考答案及听力材料 听力:1—5 CABCA 6—10 ABCCA 11—15CCAAB 16—20 BCABA 阅读:21-23 ADB 24-26 DDC 27-30 DCDD 31-35 GFBDA 完形:36—40BCDAA 41—45BACCB 46—50 ABAAD 51—55 ABCBB 填空:1.referred 2. was given; 3.joining 4. the 5.called 6.Of 7. largest 8. which 9. invaders 10.historical 写作:应用文参考范文: Dear John, I’m now extremely thrilled to tell you that I have won the national first prize of the 16th National Innovation English Competition.
