They settled in at a comfortable East Side cafe and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table. “Hey, aren’t you from Mississippi?” the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger.“ I’m from Mississippi too.” Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair. “They began telling me all the news of Mississippi,” Welty said. “I didn’t know what my New York friends were thinking.” Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Welty’s new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi state reunion (团聚). “My friends said: ‘Now we believe your stories,’” Welty added. “And I said, “Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.” Sitting on a sofa in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation. “I don’t make them up,” she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years.“I don’t have to.” Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Welty’s people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets of her native Jackson, Miss., from conversations overheard on a bus. It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story. 4.What happened when Welty was with her friends at the cafe? A. Two strangers joined her B. Her childhood friends came in. C.A heavy rain ruined the dinner D. Some people held a party there. 5.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 6 refers to Welty’s . They are pleasure seekers. C The Boy Made It ! One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn't have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute. Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use. He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn't, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could. By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled(蜷缩) in his cave and slept. The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved. Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls’ survival show Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode(一期节目)of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out. When Grylls heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds(行为), he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive. 7. What happened to Nicholas one Sunday afternoon? A. He got lost. B. He broke his skis.C. He hurt his eyes.D. He caught a cold. 8. How did Nicholas keep himself warm? A. He found a shelter. B. He lighted some branches. C. He kept on skiing. D. He built a snow cave. 9. On Tuesday, Nicholas______ . A. did the right things in the dangerous situation B. watched Grylls’TV program regularly C. created some tips for survival D. was very hard-working D Children are amazing language learners! They’re able to pick up new languages quickly and easily, without any accent (口音). Adults, on the other hand, have to study hard to learn another languages, and even then, they usually never lose their native (本族语的) accents. Why? What makes children different? One explanation has to do with the muscles (肌肉) that control the movement in our mouths. In our mouths, there are hundreds of muscles that control the movements of our tongue, lips, decks, and so on. In children, their muscles are still flexible ( 灵活的),so it’s easier for them to move their mouths into new positions to make new sounds. In adults, the muscles are less flexible, so it’s more difficult for them to make sounds that aren’t in their native language. Another explanation has to do with our brains. There are two sides to our brains---the left side and the right side. In adults, each side of our brain helps us to do different things. For example, the left side of our brain helps us to think through problems step by step, while the right side helps us to remember things we see, hear, and feel. In children, however, the brain isn’t yet divided into a left and a right side. Some researchers believe that this helps children to be more flexible language learners. In other words, their brains are more open to differences in a new language. 11. According to the passage above, children learn languages _______ than adults. A. more easily B. less easily C. more correctly D. much more slowly 12. The muscles in children’s mouths are _______. This allows them to make new sounds easily. A. long B. flexible C. different D. young 13. There are two sides to an adult brain, and each side helps to _______. A. become flexible language learners B. think through problems C. make decisions D. do different things 14. A child’s brain is _______. A. divided into a left and a right side B. not yet divided into a left and a right side C. going to develop into a left-sided brain D. going to develop into a right-sided brain 15. Which one of the following statements is true? A. It is hard for an adult to study a new language while not losing his native accent. B. Children can learn a language more easily because their brains develop very fast. C. Children can become flexible language learners when they grow up. D. Adult’s brains are more open to different languages. 第二节(共5小题,满分10分) 根据短文内容,选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,有两处多余选项。 The jobs of the future have not yet been invented. 16.
