That means we get our new hips for free. My hip had been hurting me for years before I went to the doctor. Of course, it was free. She referred me to a surgeon, but the earliest appointment was in 10 months. Ten months later, after some free X-rays, the surgeon told me I needed a surgery, which was about an 18-month wait, for some senior citizens had been on the operation list. Another 18 months! I dragged myself out of the surgeon’s office. Walking through the hospital, I thought about the situation. As the breadwinner of a large family, I couldn’t wait that long, so I had to get to the front line. This time I really needed to fight for myself. At that very moment, in the shop window of the hospital, I saw a sign which read, “Volunteers Needed.” Suddenly, an idea occurred to me — I would get the job. Fortunately, they signed me up immediately because the average age of the volunteers at the shop was 75. They were desperate for some young blood. Every Friday morning, I was at the shop. While seeing the hospital staff, I’d casually ask, “What do you do?” Then I’d tell them, “Well, I’m getting my hip replaced — in 18 months. It’s going to be so great when the pain stops.” Soon, all the staff got to know me. Naturally, in my next appointment, the surgeon recognized me. Moments later, I had a surgery date just weeks away. I had to say it was actually my volunteering that got me to the front of the line. And I’m not ashamed of it, for I intend to stick with the volunteering. Also, even when I cheated the system, I did it in a way that benefits society. 25. What can we infer from the second paragraph? A. She was too painful to walk. B. She was too scared to have the surgery. C. She felt rather upset and disappointed. D. She didn’t believe what the surgeon said. 26. Why did the writer decide to be a volunteer? A. To get her new hip free of charge. B. To receive some tiny gifts from others. C. To approach the doctor for an earlier surgery. D. To donate blood to the hospital. 27. What did the author think of her cheating? A. It was a pride. B. It was a shame. C. It didn’t matter. D. It benefited society. 28. Which can be the best title for the text? A. How I got my new hip. B. The way to improve Canada health-care system. C. The doctor who saved my life. D. How to be a volunteer in hospital. C Imagine that you’re the creator and show runner of the newest comedy show on television. Only it isn’t so popular yet, and your live Studio audience isn’t giving you the big laughs the show deserves. Do you film the show all over again, hoping that this time the audience will laugh? Or is there another option for making a joke sound funnier than it was received? Improve the sound by adding a laugh track(笑声声带)! “Sweetening,” or the addition of sound effects such as laughs, screams, and other audience-produced noises to the audio track of a TV show, has been used since the 1940s to produce the appearance, or rather the sound, of an engaged and entertained response to a show’s comedy. Laugh tracks came into existence as not only a solution, and sometimes replacement, for an unengaged live audience but also as a way to engage an at-home audience into a more-traditional, public, and theater like experience. Adding a laugh track to a television show makes the viewers at home feel much less like they’re sitting on a couch staring at the television screen and much more like they’re in a room full of laughing happy people to varying degrees of success. Though the art of sweetening has risen and fallen in popularity over the past 60 years, credit for its creation and continued use is owed to laugh-track pioneer and sound engineer Charles Douglass. Douglass was the first to develop, in 1953, a machine for producing “canned laughter”, accessible at the push of a button or pull of a lever (操纵杆). Despite being artificial, sensibly edited laugh tracks are found by television studios to bring about a positive audience response, as their use is usually accompanied by higher ratings and increased audience memory. Though some television audiences may disagree with the value of the laugh track, the cheerful and repetitive sound holds a permanent place in the history and future of television comedy. 29. The author uses the first paragraph to . A. point out a way of making comedies B. seek solutions for the problem C. introduce the topic “sweetening” D. arouse readers’ interest in comedies 30. What effect does a laugh track produce? A. Communication among TV viewers. B. The creation of a show. C. More engaged live audience. D. Funnier sound in a show. 31. What’s the author’s attitude towards the use of the laugh track? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent. 32. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. The brief history of laugh tracks. B. The benefits of using laugh tracks. C. The development of TV comedies. D. The way to improve television shows. D A parent might place his daughter’s drawing on the fridge out of a love for his child rather than for the wonderful image, but for many people, that children art is actually quite amazing. In fact, adult artists were often inspired by children’s drawing. For the museum-goers out there who tend to point to a piece of modern art and say, “My kid could have made that !”It’s worth remembering that often, that’s actually just what the artist had in mind. For many kids, drawing is exciting not because of the final product it leads to, but because they can live completely in the world of their drawing for a few minutes. Even children are scribbling(涂鸦), they’re representing through action, not through pictures. Liane Alves, a prekindergarten teacher, recalled a student who presented her with a drawing featuring a single straight line across the page. Alves assumed the child hadn’t given too much thought to the drawing until he explained that the line was one of the stems from The Princess and the Pea, one of the fairy tales they read in class. Maureen Ingram, who’s a preschool teacher at the same school, said her students often tell different stories about a given piece of art depending on the day, perhaps because they weren’t sure what they intended to draw when they started the picture. “We as adults will often say, ‘I’m going to draw a horse, ’and we set out. . . and get frustrated when we can’t do it,” Ingram said. “Children seem to take a different approach, where they just draw, and then they realize, ’it is a horse.’”] And what about those odd or scary-looking drawings? Does that mean kids are telling themselves stories that are odd or scary? It’s hard to say, but it’s rarely a good idea to over-interpret it. Ellen Winner, a psychology professor, pointed to parents who worry when their kid draws a child bigger than the adults. What’s most important to remember is that “children’s art has its own logic,” Winner said. “Children are not being crazy. ” 33. The author gives the example of Liane’s student to prove that A. not all the children like drawing in the classroom. B. simple scribbles from children are meaningful. C. children’s drawing is too complicated to understand. D. teachers often find it hard to teach children drawing. 34. What is most important for children while they are drawing? A. Drawing process. B. The ending of story. C. The best image. D. A copy of real things. 35. What should parents do if their children draw things odd or scary? A. Help the children to draw the picture again. B. Ask teachers to show the children how to draw. C. Take it easy and listen to the story behind the picture. D. Invite other children to have a discussion about the drawing. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 The Art of Slow Reading If you are reading this article in print, chances are that you will only get through half of what I have written. And if you are reading this online, you may not even finish a fifth. ___36___They suggest that many of us no longer have the concentration to read articles through to their conclusion. So are we getting stupider? Actually, our online habits are damaging the mental power we need to process and understand textual information. Round-the-clock news makes us read from one article to the next without necessarily engaging fully with any of the content. Our reading is frequently interrupted by the noise of the latest email and we are now absorbing short bursts of words on Twitter and Facebook more regularly than longer texts.___37___But we are gradually forgetting how to sit back, think carefully, and relate all the facts to each other. ___38___A desperate bunch of academics want us to take our time while reading, and re-reading. They ask us to switch off our computers every so often and rediscover both the joy of personal engagement with printed texts, and the ability to process them fully. What’s to be done then? Most slow readers realize that total rejection of the web is extremely unrealistic. They feel that getaway from technology for a while is the answer.___39___ Personally, I’m not sure whether I could ever go offline for long. Even while writing this article, I am switching constantly between sites, skimming too often, absorbing too little. Internet reading has become too rooted in my daily life for me to change. I read essays and articles not in hard copy but as PDFs. I suspect that many readers are in a similar position.___40___ You can download a computer application called Freedom, which allows you to read in peace by cutting off your Internet connection. Or if you want to avoid being disturbed by the Internet, you could always download offline reader Instapaper for your iPhone. If you’re still reading my article, that is slow reading. A. The Internet is probably part of the problem. B. Now some campaigns are advocating slow reading. C. These are the two findings from the recent research projects. D. But if you just occasionally want to read more slowly, help is at hand. E. Slow reading can help connect a reader to neighborhood and become popular. F. Because of the Internet, we have become very good at collecting information. G. Some of them have suggested turning their computers off for one day a week. 第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节;满分45分) 第一节:完型填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) My daughter brought her four dogs over to my house though I keep two of my own. I should have told you in advance, but something happened beyond my expectation. My teacher called me to send his computer to his office. Unfortunately, my mobile phone got a flat battery after 1 received the call. Worst of all, I was caught in a traffic jam on my way back. Next Saturday afternoon, I’d like to meet you at three o’clock at the gate in the park near our college. We will talk about Chinese table manners. If possible, would you please be familiar with the topic before our practice? Once again, I’m sorry for any inconvenience caused. Hope to see you soon. Yours, Li Hua 听力部分录音材料 (Text 1) W:Sir, could you please wait for another 20 minutes and we'll serve you soon. M:Another 20 minutes? It was only 6 o'clock when I got here, but it's 7:10 now. (Text 2) M:So how was yesterday's performance? Did I miss out on anything good? W:Hardly, I kept looking at my watch the whole night. (Text 3) W:How wonderful to see you here! I wonder where you have been after graduation. M:I have been abroad for ten years. What about you? W:Me? Still in our college, I became a teacher. (Text 4) M:It's already 12:30. Let's go for lunch. W:Can you wait for me a few minutes? I'll be through with my report right away. M:I'm afraid I can't, because I have to go to the editor's office in half an hour. W:Then you go first. (Text 5) W:Good morning, Dr Zane's office.[] M:This is Mr Hill. I have a ten o'clock appointment, but I'm running a little late. Do you have any openings this afternoon? W:Sorry we don't. Can you come in tomorrow morning? (Text 6) W:Now that Abby has finished her presentation, let's evaluate her speech. Jason, what do you think of her presentation? M:She spoke loudly and clearly and she seemed quite confident. W:OK. What else? M:Her speech was well organized. Her conclusion reminded me of all the important points she had made. W:Good. Now, what about some things that Abby might work on for next time? M:There were some long pauses when she was trying to think about what to say next. W:True. Perhaps practicing a few more times before her speech would help her not to pause as much. (Text 7) M:Hi. I don't think we've met. My name's Tom. W:Hi, Tom. Nice to meet you. My name is Juanita, but everybody calls me Jenny. M:Nice to meet you, Jenny. So, where are you from? W:Well, I was from Australia, but we moved to the United States when I was about five years old. My parents now live in Chile. That's where they first met. How about you, Tom? M:I was born in California, and we lived there until I was seven. W:Oh yeah? Where did you go after that? M:Well, we spent a total of ten years in Germany and Japan, and then we returned to the States, but I think my parents would have stayed in Japan, let's say, another 20 years had it not been for my education. W:Wow. It sounds like you've had an interesting life. So, what do you do now? M:I'm a student at Purdue University. (Text 8) W:Hi, Jim. M:Hi, Alice. What's that? W:It's my protest, that is, some suggestions to the government. Do you want to sign it? M:A protest? Who for? W:It's against doing tests on animals. I'm going to send it to all the companies that test medicines on animals. M:What? Are you pulling my leg? W:No, I'm not Jim. This is serious. Do you want to sign it? M:Yes, I do. W:Well then, sign! M:Hold on. They need to test medicines and drugs, don't they? They can't give them to people without testing them. W:Look, Jim. There are lots of other ways to cure illnesses without using drugs. M:I don't know about that. Anyway, people are more important than animals. W:Animals have rights too, you know. M:Of course, they do. But people have more rights. W:Jim! I can't believe my ears! Don't you like animals? M:Of course I do, but ... (Text 9) M:Now Cathy, do you know when the visitors from India are coming? M:And how many are coming? Did you say about 12? W:Yes, they said 12 at first, but reduced to the half this morning. M:Good, we have eight weeks to prepare, here are my suggestions. On the first day, a welcome party, then they can visit the schools in the district on the second and third days. W:We forgot that this group wants to look at how computers are being used in the classroom. M:Exactly, so I want to ask Mr Goodman to give them a talk on this on the afternoon of the third day. W:That will be very nice. M:And on the last day, they would do some sightseeing, we could take them on the tour of London but many of them may have already been, and Scotland will be too far away. W:Why not take them for a walk along the coast, it should be interesting. M:Good idea! Cathy, I'm sure they'll like it. (Text 10) Some time ago, a friend of mine who worked in a part of the city I didn't know very well, invited me to call on him. It took me hours to get there and I took great trouble to find a proper spot to park my car. As I was already three-quarters of an hour late, I parked my car quickly. At noon, just as I was leaving my friend's office, it suddenly struck me that I had no idea where I had parked my car. I could hardly go up to a policeman and tell him that I had lost a small green car somewhere! Walking down street after street, I examined each car closely and was very happy to see a small green car just behind an old car. But how disappointed I was to discover that though the car was exactly like my own, it belonged to someone else! Feeling quite tired now, I went off for lunch. Some time later, I left the restaurant and walked down the street. Turning the corner, I nearly jumped for joy: my car was right in front of me, and there was no problem this time. To tell the truth, driving in crowded cities is far from being a pleasure and it is much easier to walk than to drive.查看更多
