At school I really struggled with physics and chemistry and was much happier in English Language or History classes. My mind is not structured enough to understand how science works, I’m a bit of a daydreamer and prefer using my imagination rather than learning facts, figures and formulae(公式). Of course I knew who Marie Curie was, her great achievements, her contribution to science, to medical advances and influence on the world, but other than that, I really had very little idea about her life.‎ Shelley Emling has based this book on Marie Curie’s relationship with her two daughters, Irene and Eve. The book begins after the early death of Pierre Curie, when Marie is left to carry on the work that they started as a couple and to bring up her two small daughters alone. Emling has concentrated her book on the communication between Marie and her daughters. She was not an overly-protective mother, nor did she hesitate to spend time away from her daughters, yet this did ‎ not weaken their relationship. Marie was a caring and loving mother, who encouraged her daughters to become individuals, to achieve what they wanted to.‎ Marie Curie and her husband made the decision not to profit from their discoveries. It was because of this that Marie had to depend on donations to carry out her work, and that she had to carry out tours of the States.‎ I was very impressed by Emling’s writing style --- she has told the story of three extraordinary women who were way ahead of their time in an interesting and very readable manner.‎ ‎21. What is the writer good at?‎ A. Physics and chemistry.‎ B. Facts, figures and formulae.‎ C. English and History.‎ D. Daydreaming.‎ ‎22. What is Marie Curie like in the eyes of Irene and Eve?‎ A. She makes a pet of them like babies.‎ B. She avoids staying away from them.‎ C. She encourages them to build their own characters.‎ D. She wants to be involved in every area of their life.‎ ‎23. Why did Marie Curie tour the States?‎ A. Because she meant to make herself a famous person.‎ B. Because she wished to introduce the medical advances to people in the U. S. A.‎ C. Because she needed money to bring up her two small daughters by herself.‎ D. Because she decided to continue her work without money made from discoveries.‎ ‎24. The book written by Shelley Emling focuses on ________.‎ A. the connection between Marie Curie and her daughters B. the contributions Marie Curie made to the world C. the research work of Marie Curie and her husband D. the decision made by Marie Curie and her husband B Over the past century, an alarming number of animals have become endangered or even extinct. Below are some animals whose numbers have been rapidly dropping in recent years.‎ Panda Bear One of the biggest reasons contributing to the decline in the panda species is the destruction of its natural habitat. Farmers in China have gradually been claiming more and more of the land. As a result, pandas are forced to move away to places where it is hard to find bamboo for food.‎ Green Turtle The green sea turtle species has survived for several millions of years, so you might wonder why it’s only becoming endangered now. A major cause is the change in climate and temperature, which both affect the hatching rates of turtle eggs. Climate changes also cause violent weather and rising water levels to flood areas where turtles usually go to lay their eggs. Apart from this, oil spills and other poisonous pollution, as well as increased fishing activities can cause sickness, or even death to the green turtles.‎ Cheetah Cheetahs are famous for being the fastest animal on land but even they can’t run from some of the larger threats that have harmed them. Like the panda bears, cheetahs have gradually been losing their natural homes due to humans claiming land and developing in those areas To make matters even worse, smaller animals move away when these areas are occupied, which means that the cheetah has less food! Don’t forget that other large animals, such as lions, are also fighting for any food that they can find, so occasionally young cheetahs end up as prey too.‎ Indian Elephant Elephants are extremely intelligent animals and also the largest mammals that live on land. Sadly, in Asia many elephants were killed so that people could remove their tusks to use as decorative objects. While this practice has been banned now, some people still illegally continue. Forests in India have also been steadily destroyed and elephants are sometimes killed when they end up on human territory.‎ ‎25. Humans’ increasing demand for land doesn’t affect the number of ________.‎ A. Indian elephants B. cheetahs C. panda bears D. green turtles ‎26. We can save the largest mammals living on land by ________.‎ A. planting more bamboos B. helping them find mates C. stopping hunting them D. preventing poisonous pollution ‎27. The living conditions of the fastest animal on land become worse because ________.‎ A. forests have been destroyed B. they are threatened by humans and larger animals C. people are fond of hunting wild animals D. no law bans people from removing their tusks C I was in a taxi in Singapore last week and I couldn't help but notice the sticker attached to the back of the driver’s seat. In English and Chinese it read, “We accept Alipay.” It was a reminder that e-commerce in China is no longer just about how great brands break into the Chinese market. It’s also about an important slice of China’s economy coming to you.‎ If you are a brand manager or a salesman, you’re increasingly likely to find yourself fighting with the push of Chinese e-commerce companies in your home market. That’s for two reasons: China’s leadership in electronic payments and the continued rise in Chinese tourism. The result of this is that Chinese consumers are an increasingly important factor in markets around the world.‎ On the electronic payment front, there are some strong reasons to introduce the electronic payment systems Chinese consumers are already using. In China, the traditional wallet has been replaced by an electronic wallet on a smartphone. It’s common to make all of your payments for daily needs through that smartphone, using one of the two main electronic payment providers: WeChat Pay or Alipay.‎ It’s not just easy to use. These two tech companies have the reach and customer base to push their payment systems beyond their original e-commerce mission. Noodle shops will take electronic payments, and even street musicians have QR for donations. Whether you are paying your electricity bill or seeing a doctor, your mobile phone can handle the payment.‎ As a result, China is today the most cash-free of any of the world’s major economies --- and that trend will coninue. Already, the numbers are staggering. According to a survey by Ipsos and Tencent, 14% of Chinese people do not carry any cash, while 26% hold less than RMB100 (less than $16) in their wallets, day to day. According to consulting firm iResearch. in 2016 China’s mobile payments hit $5.5 trillion, almost 50 times America’s $112 billion.‎ ‎28. The writer tells his experience in a taxi in Singapore to ________.‎ A. introduce the topic of the text B. examine a problem in detail C. offer some solutions to an issue D. inform the finding of a new study ‎29. The fact that Alipay is accepted overseas indicates that ________.‎ A. mobile payment in china is becoming more and more popular B. Chinese economy is taking up a bigger share internationally C. great brands find it harder to enter the Chinese market D. the world market is determined by Chinese tourists ‎30. The aim of paragraphs 3-4 is to ________.‎ A. warn the cost and safety of cash-free payment B. explain the reasons for the popularity of electronic payment C. prove the common usage of mobile payment with numbers D. introduce the two main digital payment providers ‎31. Which can best replace the underlined word “staggering” in the last paragraph?‎ A. Worrying. B. Important. C. Ridiculous. D. Impressive.‎ D I started my journey at the Cadillac House, drove out of the city and got on the 1-95 toward Washington, D.C.. It’s about a four-hour drive.‎ As soon as I jumped on the highway, I sped up to about 70 miles per hour and entered standard cruise control. A small indicator on the instrument panel(仪表盘)showed the car was ready to engage self-driving mode. I pushed a button on the steering wheel to begin, initiating Super Cruise mode.‎ A green light bar at the top of my steering wheel showed that Super Cruise was on. There were no shake, no sudden speed changes or anything like that. The car remained perfectly steady. It uses a combination of cameras, radar sensors, and GPS to find the center of the lane. The car found it like a train on a track.‎ I had to admit that I was little worried about letting the car take over at first. I kept my hands near the wheel and my eyes locked on the road. After about ten minutes, I finally started to trust the ‎ car’s judgment. It soon became clear that it could easily drive itself in light traffic, braking when necessary and keeping a steady speed.‎ Then we hit a bottleneck. There was a standstill traffic outside of Baltimore, and things could have easily gone wrong, but this is where Super Cruise really shined. The vehicle came to a complete stop to avoid crashing into traffic, then sped up when cars started moving again. It was impressive as hell, and something that sets the 2018 Cadillac CT6 apart from all competitors.‎ I eventually turned off the highway and headed into Washington D.C.. To turn Super Cruise of, I simply hit the button on the steering wheel again. The green light at the top of the wheel turned off, and I took control of the car.‎ The CT6 had no problem bringing me from New York to Washington, D.C, in Super Cruise mode practically al by itself. It makes me hopeful for a future where I’ll never need to touch a steering wheel again.‎ ‎32. What is the text mainly about?‎ A. A report comparing different cars’ performance.‎ B. A description of an adventurous journey.‎ C. An advertisement of a new type of car.‎ D. An account of a self-driving experience.‎ ‎33. The built-in facilities help the car remain steady.‎ C. The car can adjust its speed according to traffic conditions.‎ D. The operation of the Super Cruise mode is quite simple.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Camping on Erupting Volcano Santiaguito in Guatemala Guatemala’s active volcano Santiaguito erupts with an explosion of hot ash and rocks every few hours.
