This little country never fails to please visitors. Arrive The national airline is Sri Lankan Airlines, which flies from Colombo to London and a couple of other European cities. The country’s main airport is Colombo Bandaranaike, located 29km north of the capital city. Why now? The best time to visit Sri Lanka’s southern beaches is from November to April. So by going early in the season, you’ll get the best weather. Also in November, Deepavali, known as “Diwali” or the “Festival of Lights”, is Sri Lanka’s main religious festival, celebrated throughout the country. See There is plenty to see in Sri Lanka. The ancient capital cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura are worth seeing, and so are many outstanding ruins. Other must-sees are the rock fortress (要塞) of Sigiriya, towering over the jungle as far as the eye can see, and Dambulla’s cave temple, the country’s largest and best preserved. Both are UNESCO World Heritage (遗产) Sites. Kandy is a picture-like town, which was the last stronghold of the Kandyan Kings. Today it is a cultural relic centre where age-old customs, arts, and crafts remain. Do Sri Lanka owns about 1,600km of beautiful palm-shaded beaches as well as warm, pure seas and colourful coral reefs. You can explore the underwater world, and surfing and diving are available too. Away from the shore, wildlife is a big draw for Sri Lanka, and Yala National Park is one of the best places in the word to see wild animals including leopards (豹) and elephants. Taste Sri Lanka is celebrated for its excellent food, with a particular emphasis on fresh fruit and vegetables on menus everywhere. Fish and seafood are a big part of the local diet. Did you know? Sri Lanka is known for its tea, but it is also the world’s largest producer and exporter of cinnamon(肉桂). 1. Which of the following is a cultural relic centre of Sri Lanka? A. Kandy. B. Anuradhapura. C. Polonnaruwa. D. Colombo. 2. If you want to know something about “Diwali”, you’d better go there in . A. September. B. October. C. November. D. May. 3. We learn from the passage that Sri Lanka . A. is in the Pacific Ocean B. is famous for its excellent food C. is the world’s largest producer of tea D. has only flights to London B Next autumn when you see wild geese (大雁) heading south for the winter flying in a V formation you might think about what scientists have discovered as to why they fly that way. As each bird flaps (拍打) its wings, it creates an uplift (上升力) for the bird immediately following. By flying in a V formation the whole group adds at least 71% greater flying range (航程) than if each bird flies on its own. People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the push of one another. When a wild goose falls out of the formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance (阻力) of trying to go alone and quickly tries to get back into the formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. When the head goose gets tired, it flies back into the formation and another goose flies to the front. It is wise to take turns doing difficult jobs whether it be people or wild geese flying south. Wild geese honk (发出雁叫声) from behind to inspire those up front to keep up their speed. What can we learn from this? When a wild goose gets sick or wounded by gunshots, and falls out of the formation, two other geese will fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They will stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies, and only then will they go on with their own or with another formation to catch up with their group. 4. Wild geese fly in a V formation in order to ________. A. protect themselves from danger B. fly more quickly and easily C. help the sick and wounded D. fly much higher in the sky 5. If a wild goose falls out of the V formation, _______. A. the other geese will call it back B. the other geese will fly with it C. it will try to get back into the group D. it will fall behind the whole group 6. What can we learn from the fifth paragraph? A. We should try to lead others to move forward. B. We should give people facing difficulties encouragement. C. We should believe in those who offer us help. D. We should care more about the old. 7. When a wild goose becomes sick or is wounded, ____. A. it will be left alone and will fall on the ground B. the whole group will stop flying C. two other geese will stay with it to offer help D. other geese will honk to give it encouragement C Animals seem to have the sense to eat when they are hungry and they do not eat more than their bodies need. It has been shown that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time, prefer water with vitamins(维生素) to water without vitamins, even though there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles. When a sweet smell was added to the vitamins-enriched water, the rats did seem to develop a taste for it and kept drinking it, even after the vitamins were changed to the clear water. In time(最后), however, they broke the habit and went back to where the necessary vitamins were. In experiments, babies of 6 to 12 months old were placed in a room with a wide choice of baby food before them. They were given whatever food they pointed to or appeared interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating habits, but that over a period of time they managed to choose a well-balanced diet. So in choosing food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what's best for them. Clearly, there is a kind of “body wisdom”, which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced by old habits. Some people eat foxes, dogs and blackbirds, while we eat cows and pigs. So what people eat and how many they eat seem to be greatly influenced by what is going around them. 8. In the experiment on rats, a sweet smell was added to the rats’ drinking water to . A. encourage rats to drink vitamins-enriched water B. find out rats’ preference in flavor(口味) C. test whether rats know which drink is good for them D. show the vitamins are tasteless 9. Talking about eating habits, babies and rats are just like each other because________ . A. both have the wisdom to choose a balanced diet B. both prefer flavored food and drink C. both have the same eating habits D. both develop a taste for the same kinds of flavors 10. In the experiment mentioned in the second paragraph, babies were_________. A. given many choices of drinks B. given all kinds of baby food C. placed and fed in a hospital D. trained to select a balanced diet 11. According to the passage, grown-up people’s eating habits differ from those of babies in that _______ . A. they know better than babies what kinds of food are good for their health B. they usually cannot say no to all kinds of delicious foods C. their eating habits have much to do with the social and cultural customs (文化习俗) D. they have more choices of food than babies in eating patterns D Many parents watch the news or other shows as children play nearby. But new research shows that even when the television is just background noise,it may be disruptive to a child’s normal development. It’s estimated that 75 percent of very young children in the United States live in homes where the television is on most of the time, even though the kids often aren’t watching it. The University of Massachusetts researchers recently studied how TV background noise might affect young children. The study looked at 50 1,2and 3yearolds.Each child came to a lab with a parent and was allowed to play for an hour with various toys. For half the time,a television was on in the room, showing the adult game show as well as advertisements. During the other half hour, the TV was turned off. As expected, the children paid little attention to the adult television show, glancing at it for less than a few seconds at a time, and less than once a minute. Even so,the distraction (分心) of the background noise had a significant effect on how children at every age played. When the television was on,the children played with each toy for far shorter periods of time, and focused attention during play was also shorter compared to how they played when the TV was off. Researchers said that even though the children aren’t interested in the show, background TV affects their ability to do various types of play. The finding is important because many wellmeaning parents who wouldn’t let their young children watch television may not realize that even adult programs that don’t interest children still can have an effect. “Background TV is potentially a chronic (长期的) environmental risk factor affecting most American children,” said the lead author of the study. “Parents should limit their young children’s exposure (接触).” 12.We know from the passage that________. A.background TV noise has little effect on adults B.the effect of background TV noise on children is immediate C.most young children in America live in homes exposed to TV noise D.most parents in America wouldn’t let their children watch TV 13.The underlined word “disruptive” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to________. A.harmful B.important C.similar D.related 14.In the study, the children________. A.were all 3yearolds B.were asked to watch adult TV shows C.played with more than one toy D. played for an hour while the TV was on 15.What does the study show? A.Children pay much attention to adult TV shows. B.Children should be allowed to watch TV for kids only. C.The more toys a child has,the shorter time he plays with each one. D. The background TV noise affects children’s ability to focus. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。注意:选择E涂AB;选择F涂CD;选择G涂ABCD Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a better student in several ways. __16__ Second, your notes are excellent materials to refer to when you are studying for a test.
