A nickname can also be a descriptive name for a person, place or thing. Many American cities have nicknames. These can help establish an identity, spread pride among citizens and build unity. Nicknames can also be funny. Los Angeles is the second largest city in population, after New York City. Los Angeles has several nicknames. One is simply the city’s initials, L. A. It is also called the City of Angels because Los Angeles means “the angels” in Spanish. Los Angeles often has warm, sunny weather. So another nickname is City of Flowers and Sunshine. New York is called The Big Apple. So Los Angeles is sometimes called The Big Orange because of the fruit that grows in that city’s warm climate. The American motion picture and television industries are based in Los Angeles. So it is not surprising that it is called The Entertainment Capital of the World. Many films are made in the area of Los Angeles called Hollywood. Millions of people visit the area. No trip to Los Angeles is complete without seeing the word “Hollywood” spelled out in huge letters on a hillside. Many movie stars live in Los Angeles. The city is sometimes called Tinseltown. This nickname comes from the shiny, bright and often unreal nature of Hollywood and the movie industry. The city of Los Angeles is part of Los Angeles County. There are many smaller cities in the county. Beverly Hills, with its rich people, is one of them. So is Pasadena, with its Rose Parade each New Year’s Day. So are the coastal cities of Santa Monica and Malibu, where people like to ride surfboards on the Pacific Ocean waves. A good place for watching unusual•looking people is Venice, an area on the west side of Los Angeles. A system of waterways designed after the Italian city of Venice has been built there. Many people love Los Angeles for its warm sunny weather, beautiful mountains and beaches, and movie stars. 1. Which is the nickname for Los Angeles for its sunny weather? A. The Big Apple. B.Tinseltown. C.The Entertainment Capital of the World. D. City of Flowers and Sunshine. 2. Which of the following is famous for New Year’s Rose Parade? A. Beverly Hills. B.Pasadena. C.Los Angeles County. D.Santa Monica. 2. What do people enjoy doing in Malibu? A. Meeting great movie stars. B.Experiencing a system of waterways. C.Seeing unusual•looking people. D.Riding surfboards on the Pacific Ocean. 3. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. Tourist spots in Los Angeles. B.Introduction to Los Angeles. C. Nicknames of Los Angeles. D.Climate and movies in Los Angeles. B Many people take it for granted that black is a color of bad things while white should always mean something good. This may be because, in their opinion, black is related to darkness and white to purity. However, that is not always the case. Did you know that the same one color may mean differently in different places of the world? In the English•speaking world, black is the color of mourning. People wear black clothes at the funeral. Red is concerned with danger or bloodshed (流血).Yellow is the word for fear. If you are afraid, you are yellow. Yet none of these sayings is true outside the English•speaking world. In China and Korea white is the color of mourning. In Russia, China and some other countries, red stands for beauty, life and excellence. In Italy and Germany, you are yellow with anger, not with fear. Even within the English•speaking area it is not difficult to find color contradictions (矛盾). A red cap in the United States is a porter in a railway station. In Britain, however, a red cap is a military policeman. Both names are logical because both men wear red caps. Similarly, the British term for an American white collar worker is sometimes called a black•coated worker. One does not have to cross an area to find color differences. Would you rather be red•blooded or a blue•blooded ? If we go back to the origin, we find that both terms are logical as both names suggest. The expression “blue blood” comes from Spain, where some noble families proudly said that they had “blue blood”. Actually they meant that they had no Moorish or Jewish blood. But then why “blue” blood? Because they were fair•skinned , and it is only natural that their blood vessels (血管) stood out appearing blue. 4. Yellow is concerned with anger in . A. Russia B.Germany C.Britain D.China 6.The two meanings of the term “red cap” form a difference in . A.pronunciation B.custom C.logical relationship D.climate 7.Both Britain and America would probably agree that . A. black is the color of mourning B.a black•coated worker is employed in an office C.red stands for beauty and excellence D.a red cap is a porter in a station 8.The best title for this passage is “ ”. A.The Origin of Blue Blood B. The Development of the Symbolic Use of Colors C. The Meaning Concerned with Certain Colors D. Colors That Carry Bad Meanings 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 A patient came to see me about the stress in her life. She described all the things she had to do — one was to make her bed — from the moment she woke up until she flew out of the door for work. I suggested she experiment by not making her bed for two weeks. She was shocked, probably thinking I’d been raised by wolves in a forest. 9 Two weeks later she went into my office, smiling. She had left her bed unmade for the first time in 42 years — and nothing bad had happened. “And you know what?” she said. “I don’t dry my dishes any more, either.” 10 One was discovering that she had choices in her life that she had never seen before. The other was giving herself permission to be less that perfect. This story shows an important principle about managing time: no one can do it all. Each of us has to make choices and accept trade•offs. The problem is many people choose in ways that put themselves and their health last. They take better care of their houses and cars than they do of themselves. 11 So what is the solution? There’s an easy way. Decide what you want in your life, and put that first. On a daily basis, that should include regular meals, enough sleep and time with your family. Exercise, leisure, friendships and hobbies should also be regular aspects of life. 12 The choice is yours: whatever makes you feel good about yourself and your life. Take a nap. Take a walk. Take time to play the piano. Stop bringing your briefcase home from the office. 13 Fill more of your time with want•to•dos instead of have•to•dos. A. Most people do not take time to relax themselves. B. However, she went along with my idea. C. Stop keeping your house as clean as your mother kept hers. A. Above all, you needn’t do anything for yourself regularly. B. This woman had made two major breakthroughs. C. Namely, they put everyone else’s needs ahead of their own. D. More importantly, the point is to do something for yourself every day. 第二部分:完形填空(共 20 小题,每小题 2 分,满 40 分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 We have been driving in fog all morning, but the fog is lifting now.
