I was looking forward to having five days off from duty. Unluckily, the only one train a day back to my home in Sydney had already left. So I thought I’d hitch a ride.‎ I waited by the side of the highway for three hours but no one stopped for me. Finally, a man walked over and introduced himself as Gordon. He said that although he couldn’t give me a lift, I should come back to his house for lunch. He noticed me standing for quite a while in the November heat and thought I must be hungry. I was doubtful as a young girl but he promised me that I would be safe, and he also offered to help me find a lift home afterwards. When we arrived at his house, he made us sandwiches. After lunch, he helped me find a lift home.‎ Twenty-six years later, in 2016, while I was driving to a nearby town one day, I saw an elderly man standing in the glaring heat, trying to hitch a ride. I thought it was another chance to repay someone for the favor I’d been given decades earlier. I pulled over and picked him up. I made him comfortable on the back seat and offered him some drinking water.‎ After a few moments of small talk, the man said to me, “You haven’t changed a bit, even your red hair is still the same.” I couldn’t remember where I’d met him. He then told me he was the man who had given me lunch and helped me find a lift all those years ago. It was Gordon.‎ ‎24. Why did the writer have to hitch a ride one day in 1990?‎ A. Because she missed the only train back home.‎ B. Because she was going home for her holidays.‎ C. Because her work had ruined her trip to Sydney.‎ D. Because the small town was far away from Sydney.‎ ‎25. Which of the following did Gordon do according to Paragraph 2?‎ A. He helped the girl find a ride. ‎ B. He gave the girl a ride back home.‎ C. He bought sandwiches for the girl. ‎ D. He watched the girl for three hours.‎ ‎26. Why did the author offer a lift to an elderly man in 2016?‎ A. Because she recognized he was Gordon.‎ B. Because she was going to the nearby town.‎ C. Because she had known him for a long time.‎ D. Because she wanted to repay the favor she once got.‎ ‎27. What does the author want to tell the readers through the story?‎ A. Those who give rides will be repaid. ‎ B. Good manners bring about happiness.‎ C. People should offer free rides to others. ‎ D. Giving sometimes produces nice results.‎ C Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people admire(钦佩) or think highly of. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential of that nation.‎ Today in America, if you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choices would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars — the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent but one wonders if one should treat rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are mixed with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should find more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.‎ A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area — sports. However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of disorder. Too frequently, drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star.‎ A third type of hero is the TV or movie star. This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome. However, the personal life of too many actors is quite sad and they should not be held up as a model of young people. Today, the rock star, the athlete and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America. Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher or a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.‎ What is really sad is that the young try to imitate their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American young people are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright.‎ ‎28. What can the last sentence of the first paragraph implies (暗示) ?‎ A. Heroes of a nation will make the nation itself.‎ B. If a nation has a lot of heroes, it will be strong.‎ C. What the people admire will make the future of the nation.‎ D. If you want to be a hero, you must admire the hero ‎29. From the passage, what kind of persons are the heroes the American youth admire?‎ A. those who are perfect in all areas B. those who are talented in some area but lead an improper life C. those who are not bright but are good-looking D. those who are rich but are strict with themselves ‎30. What is the writer’s attitude towards American youth’s admiration?‎ A. He goes for it ‎ B. He is angry about it C. He thinks badly of it ‎ D. He is uninterested in it ‎31. Which of the following can take the place of the underlined word“imitate” in the last paragraph?‎ A. love B. copy C. know D. understand ‎ D Parents can cut the chances of their children getting fat simply by keeping them longer at table. Just three extra minutes at a family mealtime could help to prevent child obesity. Researchers found that among poor families, the extra minutes at mealtimes made great improvement of a normal weight for the youth. The reasons might lie in communication and the importance of a scheduled mealtime.‎ Dr. Barbara Fiese said, “Children, whose families have a 20-minute meal over four times a week, weigh less than kids who leave the table after 15 to 17 minutes. Over time, those extra minutes per meal add up and become really powerful.”‎ The researchers studied 200 family mealtimes, testing the effects of mealtime habits of families with children in primary school. They found that families, who said that shared mealtimes were an important part of family life and had special meaning for them, were less likely to have a fat child. Similarly, families who talked more together and communicated more positively during the meal, were more likely to have healthy-weight children.‎ Teaching low-income families how to make full use of family mealtimes was a wise idea. Dr. Fiese said, “This is something we can do and teach.” She added, “It’s also important to recognize the increasing differences of families and their living schedules that may need their abilities to plan ahead and set a single time to communicate with each other.”‎ Families in poorer US neighborhoods faced a lot of problems, including poor access(机会)to healthy food. But even so, regular high quality family mealtimes made a difference to the children’s weight. Dr. Fiese said, “Three to four extra minutes per meal will make a healthy weight more possible.”‎ ‎32. According to the passage, what can parents do to have healthy-weight children?‎ A. Shorten the mealtime. ‎ B. Increase their eating time.‎ C. Make them eat healthy food. ‎ D. Provide less food for each meal.‎ ‎33. What does the underlined word “obesity” probably mean?‎ A. Being sick. ‎ B. Being thinner.‎ C. Being very fat. ‎ D. Being very strong ‎34. What does Dr. Fiese suggest to us?‎ A. Twenty extra minutes per meal causes healthy weight.‎ B. It’s better to add three to four extra minutes to each mealtime.‎ C. Four meals a day will make a difference to the children’s weight.‎ D. Parents shouldn’t communicate with their children during mealtimes.‎ ‎35. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?‎ A. Healthy Food Makes Healthy Weight.‎ B. Low-Income Families Have Thinner Children.‎ C. More Mealtime Talk Causes Unhealthy Weight.‎ D. Extra Mealtime Minutes Help Prevent Child Obesity.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) ‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ ‎ Last Sunday, it being very hot, Xiao Ming's parents decided to buy an air conditioner.
