共同成长 见仁见智 Lifeguard,spo rtscaster,movie star,governor,president—there wasn’t much Ronald Reagan didn’t do in life. “The world was one vast opportunity for him,”Lou Cannon wrote in his biography of the former US president,who died on June 5,aged 93. Reagan’s final years saw him fight a losing battle against Alzheimer’s disease (老年痴呆 症).But his positive attitude toward life has given hope to many people. Born in 1911 to a poor family in a small town in Illinois,his father was a failed salesman who drank too much.It was in this powerful optimism that would serve him so well.He always believed better times lay ahead,and this was r eflected in his high school year book entry.“Life is one grand,sweet song,so start the music,”he wrote.As a teenager,Reagan spent summers work ing as a lifeguard at his local beach,saving 77 lives in seven years.He graduated from college in 1932 with a degree in economics and sociology.But America was still in the middle of the Great Depression(经济大萧 条),and jobs were hard to find.Reagan finall y found work as a radio sports announcer and this road led him to Hollywood in 1937. During a 20-year film career,he never became a leading star.As in his lifegu ard days,Reagan loved to play the hero and only took the role of a bad guy once in more than 50 films. [来源:Z。xx。k.Com] But,back in London,her views were not shared by some members of the British government,which refused to support a ban on th ese weapons.Angry politicians launched an attack on the Princess in the press.They described her as “very ill-informed” and a “loose cannon (乱放炮的人)”.[来源:学。科。网][来源:] The Princess responded by brushing aside the criticisms:“This is a distraction (干扰)we do not need.All I am trying to do is help.” Opposition parties,the media and the public immediately voiced their support for the Princess.To make matters worse for the government,it soon emerge that the Princess’s trip had been approved by the Foreign Office,and that she was in fact very well-informed about both the situation in Angola and the British government’s policy regarding landmines.The result was a severe embarrassment for the government. To try and limit the damage,the Foreign Secretary,Malcolm Rifkin claimed that the princess’s views on landmines were not very different from government policy,and that it was “working towards” a worldwide ban.The Defense Secretary,Michael Portillo,claimed the matter was “a misinterpretation or misunderstanding”.
