B Insects (昆虫) are a very healthy food. They have almost as much protein (蛋白质) as meat from a pig or cow and are low in fat. Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals. Marcel Dicke, who studies insects, explained in a talk how insects also produce more meat from the food they eat. For example, imagine a farmer feeds a cow 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat! Eating more insects can also help people in poor areas. Many people can raise and sell insects, which can provide jobs and food. But insects will not replace animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries would have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. In fact, for many people in the west, eating insects sounds crazy! They believe insects are dirty and dangerous. Insects make them feel uncomfortable. Some people are trying to deal with this problem. For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named “The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook”, which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel around telling people about the benefits of eating insects. But they still have a lot of work to do. 24. According to the writer eating insects _____. A. is unhealthy B. makes people put on fat C. helps protect large animals D. is environmentally friendly 25. What does the author want to show by giving the example of Marcel Dicke? A. Food production costs too much. B. It’s quite easy for farmers to raise insects. C. Raising insects is a good choice for farmers. D. There are different ways of feeding cows and insects. 26. The long way eating insects has to go mainly results from _____. A. their terrible taste B. people’s old beliefs C. family traditions D. eating methods 27. What can we infer from the idea of David and other insect experts? A. People can make a lot of money from insects. B. Insects should be better protected. C. People should eat more insects. D. It’s interesting to eat insects. C When I was a puppy, I entertained you and made you laugh. You called me your child, and I became your best friend. Whenever I was “bad” , you’d shake your finger at me and ask “How could you?” My house-training took a little longer than expected, but we worked on that together. We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, and stopped for ice cream. Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. She, now your wife, was not a “dog person”, but I was happy because you were happy. When the human babies came along, I shared your excitement and I wanted to mother them, too. Yet I spent most of my time being driven to another room. Fortunately, as they began to grow, I became their friend. Then you had a better job in another city, and the new apartment didn’t allow pets. You made the right decision to send me to an animal shelter for your “family”. I was excited about the car ride until we arrived there. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. At the gate, your son screamed in tears and you had to loosen his fingers from my collar. Sometimes when I heard human footsteps, I thought it was you. It never was. Finally, the day came. As I felt the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into the staff’s kind eyes and murmured “How could you?” Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said “I’m so sorry.” And with my last bit of energy, I tried to tell her that my “How could you?” was not directed at her. It was you, My Beloved Master. I will think of you and wait for you forever. 28. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about? A. A lovely puppy. B. The patient puppy owner. C. Precious memories of the puppy. D. A big challenge of puppy training. 29. Why did the dog spend time being driven to another room? A. It liked to do things alone. B. It got no space in the room. C. It didn’t like the babies at first. D. It wasn’t popular with the family. 30. Why did the son scream in tears at the gate of the animal shelter? A. He didn’t want to leave the dog behind. B. The shelter wasn’t good enough. C. He was afraid of the dogs. D. His father went away. 31. What can be the best title for this passage? A. How Could You? B. My Beloved Master C. The Death of a Dog D. What is the Power of Loyalty? D Do you have a spare room in your house? What about a driveway for your car? Both of these can help you make money. Many people who are short of money are taking advantage of what’s been called the “sharing economy”. Perhaps the best-known example of a company in this field is Airbnb — an American web business which allows you to rent out your spare room to holidaymakers. It says it operates in 34,000 cities of more than 190 countries and it has over 2,000,000 listings. It seems to have cornered the market! A British company is doing something with parking spaces. JustPark’s founder, Anthony Eskinazi, says, “When I had the original idea, I spotted a driveway close to a sports stadium. It would have been so convenient if I could have just parked in that driveway rather than in a commercial car park.” And he has a big clientele (顾客): around 20,000 people have advertised their spaces on the site, and he says around half a million drivers use it. There are other sites doing very similar things, like Uber and Lyft — these let drivers share their cars with other passengers. Any driver knows how valuable a place to park is. A church near Kings Cross in central London has apparently made over £200,000 by renting out space in this yard to travelers! Because this is a new business world, those rules aren’t there yet and many people are happy to share as long as it pays! But the sharing economy has its shortages: the competitors of these new companies. People who run things like traditional B&B, commercial car parks and taxi services are afraid of ending up losing money. And there is another issue, regulations on these new businesses are unclear. How will renting out your driveway affect your neighbor? 32. Which can best replace the underlined word “cornered” in Paragraph 2? A. determined by B. taken control of C. benefited from D. come onto 33. Why are a lot of people happy to share according to Paragraph 4? A. To avoid tax. B. To make a profit. C. To get over limits to them. D. To gain more convenience. 34. Which of the following may be against the sharing economy? A. A church with a large free yard. B. A driver needing a parking place. C. A traveler looking for a spare room. D. A hotel owning good accommodations. 35. How is the future of the new business according to the last paragraph? A. Modern and effective. B. Effective but worrying. C. Hopeful and satisfying . D. Creative but unpractical. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多 余选项。 Are you left-handed? If you are, you make up just 10 percent of the world’s population. 36 Most people write and play musical instruments with their right hands. 37 A new theory, called “cooperation vs competition” may have the answer. As humans evolved, we needed to work together to live. When making tools for a right-handed person – like a knife – it was easier if everybody could use the same hand. But some humans wanted to compete instead. So to have an advantage over right-handed people, they would use their left hand to surprise competitors. 38 German born American scientist Albert Einstein, British physicist Isaac Newton and British biologist Charles Darwin are some famous “lefties”. At least six US presidents were left-handed, including Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Harry Truman. “Lefties” are also often linked with creativity and visual (视觉) skills. 39 Well, the left side of our brain is where we solve problems. The right side of our brain is where we develop creativity. Right-handers tend to use the left side more than the right side. Yet left-handers tend to use both sides more evenly than right-handers. “This is why there are more of them in creative areas, such as music, art and writing,” said Alan Searleman, PhD, from St. Lawrence University, New York. 40 They tend to have worse memories, often forgetting names and places. A. How can this be? B. Why are so few people left-handed? C. This means we live in a right-handed world. D. However, it’s not all good news for left-handers. E. That means lefties should celebrate their differences. F. Although there are few left-handed people, some of them are geniuses. G. Therefore, they are always less creative than the left-handers while working. It was the middle of winter and I was just getting out of a training for my job.
