One study involved sixtyeight healthy young women and men who ran at least twentyfour kilometers a week. The runners were observed on a treadmill machine(跑步机). Sometimes they wore running shoes. Other times they ran barefoot(赤脚的). Researchers from the JKM Technologies company in Virginia, the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado did the study. They found that running shoes create more stress that could damage knees, hips and ankle joints than running barefoot. They observed that the effect was even greater than the effect reported earlier for walking in high heels. The study appeared in the official scientific journal of the American Academy of Physical Medicine. The other study appeared in the journal Nature. It compared runners in the United States and Kenya. The researchers were from Harvard University in Massachusetts, Moi University in Kenya and the University of Glasgow in Scotland. They divided the runners into three groups. One group had always run shoeless. Another group had always run with shoes. And the third group had changed to shoeless running. Runners who wear shoes usually come down heel first. That puts great force on the back of the foot. But the study found that barefoot runners generally land on the front or middle of their foot. That way they ease into their landing and avoid striking their heels. Harvard's Daniel Liebermau led the study. He says the way most running shoes are designed may explain why those who wear them land on their heels. The heel of the shoe is bigger and heavier than other parts of the shoe, so it would seem more likely to come down first. Also, the heel generally has thick material under it to soften landings. But the researchers do not suggest that runners immediately start running barefoot. They say it takes some training. And there can be risks, like running when your feet are too cold to feel if you get injured. The study was partly supported by Vibram, which makes a kind of footwear that it says is like runningbarefoot. The findings have gotten a lot of attention. But the researchers say there are many problems in the way the press has reported in their paper. So they have tried to explain their findings on a Harvard website. 【文章大意】 两项新的研究表明,穿着跑鞋跑步会增加跑步者受伤的风险,赤脚跑步反而可以避免这些损伤。 32.What's the main idea of the passage? A. In spite of all the attention focused by the media, academicians, and social scientists on human potential and the needs of individuals, there is no evidenee to support that the vast majority of workers want challenging jobs. Some individuals prefer highly complex and challenging jobs;others develop in simple, routine work. The individualdifference variable(变量)that seems to gain the greatest support for explaining who prefers a challenging job and who doesn't is the strength of an individual's needs for personal growth and selfdirection at work. Individuals with these higherorder growth needs are mote responsive for challenging work. What percentage of ordinary workers actually desire higherorder need satisfactions and will respond positively to challenging jobs? No current data is available, but a study from the 1970s estimated the figure at about 15%. Even after adjusting for changing work attitudes and the growth in whitecollar jobs, it seems unlikely that the number today exceeds 40%. The strongest voice advocating challenging jobs has not been workers—it's been professors, social science researchers, and media people. Professors, researchers, and journalists undoubtedly made their career choices,to some degree, because they wanted jobs that gave them autonomy, recognition and challenge. That, of course, is their choice. But for them, to force their needs onto the workforce in general is presumptuous(冒昧的). Not every employee is looking for a challenging job. Many workers meet their higherorder need off the job. There are 168 hours in every individual's week.Work rarely consumes more than 30% of this time. That leaves considerable opportunities, even for individuals with strong growth needs, to find higherorder need satisfaction outside the workplace. So don't feel you have a responsibility to create challenging jobs for all your employees. For many people, work is something that will never excite or challenge them. And they don't expect to find their growth opportunities at work. Work is merely something they have to do to pay their bills. They can find challenges outside of work on the golf course, fishing, at their local pub, with their friends in social clubs, with their family, and the like. 【文章大意】 这是一篇议论文。研究表明,大多数人并不喜欢有挑战性的工作。 29.What makes people choose challenging jobs? In a survey done for insurer MetLife,51% of women said they drive more safely. The evidence is on their side:Men are 3.4 times more likely than women to get a ticket for careless driving and 3.1 times as likely to be punished for drunk driving.“Women are on average less aggressive and more law abiding (守法的) drivers, which leads to fewer accidents,” the report says. However, not all male drivers share the same opinion.Of the men surveyed by MetLife,39% claimed male drivers were safer. The findings did back them up on one point:automotive knowledge. The report showed that more men are familiar with current safety equipment such as electronic stability control, which helps prevent rollover accidents. Auto safety unavoidably matters to Money.Insurance companies focus on what classes of drivers have the lowest dollar amounts of claims, and for now, that mainly includes women. In general, women pay about 9% less for auto insurance than men.A study by the website Insweb also showed that auto insurance rates are lower for women in most states.Among individual states, women get the greatest, advantage in Wyoming (where they pay 20% less),South Dakota and Washington,D.C.,where their insurance costs are 16% lower. “More than 11,900 male drivers died in US traffic accidents in 2009,compared with just under 4,900 women drivers” according to the study.“Based on miles traveled, men died at a rate of 2.5 deaths per 100 million miles traveled,vs.1.7 deaths for women.” 【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章通过列举一些数据说明现在女性司机似乎比男性司机开车更加安全。 1.According to the study, female drivers________.
