In a word: yes. The HR company Insperity put it in a recent blog post: Can your employees discuss their salaries or wages with their coworkers? Yes. Even if you have a company policy against it? Yes. The freedom to discuss your salary at work is a protected right under the labor law. The National Labor Relations Act of 1935 protects your right to discuss the conditions of your employment, including issues related to safety and pay, even when you’re not protected by a union. Talking about salary with colleagues can be uncomfortable, since there’s such a taboo about discussing money matters, but it’s an important step towards achieving equal pay for equal work. One barrier, however, stems from how we think of our own financial worth. Too many people I talk to wrongly consider their salary a reflection of their worthiness, a statement about their skills, experience, or value. At the end of the day, if we can all separate our selfworth from our salaries a bit more, it’ll become easier to talk frankly with our colleagues. Asking about money outright can be tough, so one trick I’ve picked up along the way is to ask for your colleagues to confirm or deny. For instance, you might volunteer your salary first and ask “Does that sound right to you?” by way of comparison. Or, let’s say you’re interviewing for a promotion to become a manager. You might ask a fellow manager about the kind of salary you should expect by saying, “I’m seeing salaries for this kind of position ranging from $65,000 to $70,000—does that seem accurate to you?” This way, even if your colleague isn’t comfortable sharing their salary outright, they can help you identify if your expectations are appropriate. 1.What makes coworkers uncomfortable to talk about salaries? A.The safety issue. B.The labor law. C.The wrong idea about salaries. D.The reflection of their worthiness. 2.What does “taboo” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to? A.A prohibited practice. B.A firm belief. C.A general agreement. D.A social custom. 3.What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4? A.One of my interview experiences. B.My way of asking about money. C.The method of raising questions. D.An example of getting promoted. 4.What can be the best title for the text? A.How to Discuss Salaries at Work B.Ways of Talking about Salaries C.Do Salaries Stand for Selfworth? D.Can Salaries Be Talked about at Work? You bet“当然”,故选C。By no means“绝不”;It all depends“视情况而定”;It’s up to you“由你决定”。 give up意为“放弃”;take up意为“开始从事,接受”;hold up意为“阻止”;put up意为“举起,张贴”。 not a chance“不可能”;not a little“非常”;not to mention it“更不必说,不必提及”;not a big deal“没有什么大不了的事”。 out of order“发生故障”;up in the air“悬而未定”;in that case“既然那样”;in the way“挡路,妨碍”。 故本句中谓语动词应用did so代替lost her wallet。 become强调“变化后的持续性”;grow强调“(逐渐)变得”;pass from sth.to/into sth. A.Above all最重要的是;B.On the contrary相反;C.To be honest说实话;D.Generally speaking一般来讲。 therefore“因此”;besides“除此之外”;otherwise“否则”。 in proportion to意为“与……相称”;in place of意为“代替”;in competition with意为“与……竞争”;in return for意为“作为…… as引导的从句使用了省略结构,完整的表达是as it was scheduled,故用过去分词scheduled。 common“普通的”;reasonable“合理的”;practical“实用的”。 1.B 解析:根据下文中的“She’s a week old.” 2.A 解析:根据下文中的“She was the first deaf person”可知,他们的女儿是失聪的。 3.D 解析:根据空前的“So it’s a surprise”可知,这件事令人吃惊,出乎意料。
