In fact, matter can mean just about anything. It could be one of the most useful words in the English language.‎ Let's get to the heart of the matter—a matter of principle(原则).‎ If someone says that you owe(欠) him $50,but you don't,a friend might say,“Well, you could pay him the $50.It's not that much money. Then you won't have to hear him say it anymore.” But if you do not owe him the money,do not pay him the money. It's a matter of principle.‎ There is another way to use the word matter. But be careful with your choices of words.‎ If you ask someone,“What's the matter?”,it shows you are worried about the other person. But saying,“What's the matter with you?” has a completely different meaning. And it usually sounds rude. In fact, when you say,“What's the matter with you?”,you are suggesting that the person did something wrong or stupid.‎ Another expression that could sound rude is to say,“It doesn't matter to me.” Here,it depends on the context, and how you say it.‎ Let's say you tell someone that a friend just got a big raise at work. That person answers with,“It doesn't matter to me.” Here,it means he or she does not care. And it sounds rude.‎ But saying,“Oh,you pick where we eat dinner. It doesn't matter to me.” does not sound rude. In the situation,“it doesn't matter” shows you are easy-going.‎ No matter how you look at it and what you say, matter is a very useful word. And it's only a matter of time before you will become an expert on the use of matter.‎ ‎21.We can infer from the text that the word matter ____.‎ A.has a wide use B.can mean money C.is the most used English word D.has the most different expressions ‎22.What is the author's suggestion in Paragraph 4?‎ A.Every penny counts. B.Stick to what is right.‎ C.Follow your friend's advice. D.Be careful when making friends.‎ ‎23.The author develops the text mainly by ______.‎ A.using examples B.giving instructions C.describing his experiences D.discussing research findings B Do you have trouble trying to create the next big idea? Sometimes the answer isn’t to just force an idea out of your mind. Instead, you might want to try sitting back, relaxing and letting your mind wander. Yes, you heard that correctly. If you are in need of a new idea, try daydreaming.‎ Researchers from the university of California, Santa Barbara, found an association between daydreaming and creative problem-solving. Their study includes having participants first do an “unusual-use task”. They had to try to come up with as many different ways to use an object as they could.‎ Then, the participants chose to do one of the following four things before doing the “unusual-use task” again: complete a difficult task; complete an easy task; take a 12-minute break; or skip the 12-minute break and move right on to the task exercise again.‎ Surprisingly, the group that performed best was the one that completed the easy task. Many participants reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task. So the researchers believed that this daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity.‎ But how could daydreaming help the brain come up with creative ways? The answer is something known as “unconscious thought”. Even when you are not actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a much more subtle (不易察觉的) way.‎ When you daydream, your mind is allowed to think in ways it normally would not. Because it is free of control, it can create completely new and out-of-the-box ideas.‎ Great ideas never come easily, but that does not mean you always have to work hard to get them. Feel free to do what you want and let your mind wander.‎ ‎24.The “unusual-use task” in Paragraph 2 means that participants ______.‎ A.complete an easy task ‎ B.complete a very difficult task C.take a 12-minute break ‎ D.think of various ways to use an object ‎25.Why did the participants who completed the easy task perform best?‎ A.They were not actively working to solve the easy task.‎ B.They daydreamed and it helped them be more creative.‎ C.They were daydreaming while performing the difficult task.‎ D.They skipped the 12-minute break to complete the task again.‎ ‎26.What does the underlined phrase “unconscious thought” in Paragraph 5 mean?‎ A.Your brain wander in a subtle way within your control.‎ B.Your brain knows clearly what you’re thinking and doing.‎ C.Your brain is thinking about a problem outside of your awareness.‎ D.Your brain refuses to receive any information from the outside world.‎ ‎27.The passage mainly wants to tell us that ______.‎ A.brainstorming is important to creative ideas.‎ B.daydreaming is a way to improve creativity.‎ C.problem-solving skills are important in our lives.‎ D.the more we exercise brains, the more ideas we’ll get.‎ C I once met a well-known botanist at a dinner party. I had never talked with a botanist before, and I found him very interesting. I sat there absorbed and listened while he spoke of unusual plants and his experiments (he even told me astonishing facts about the simple potato). I had a small indoor garden of my own—and he was good enough to tell me how to solve some of my problems.‎ ‎ As I said, we were at a dinner party. There must have been a dozen other guests, but I broke an important rule of politeness. I ignored everyone else and talked for hours to the botanist.‎ ‎ Midnight came. I said good night to everyone and departed. The botanist then turned to our host and said many nice things about me, including that I was a “most interesting conversationalist”. ‎ ‎ An interesting conversationalist? I had said hardly anything at all. I couldn’t have said anything if I had wanted to without changing the subject, for I didn’t know any more about plants than I knew about sharks. But  I had done this one thing; I had listened carefully. I listened because I was really interested. And he felt it. Naturally that pleased him. That kind of listening is one of the best ways to show respect to others, and it makes them feel great too. “Few human beings,” wrote Jack Woodford in Strangers in Love, “can resist the sweet effect of rapt attention.” I went even further than that. I was “sincere in my admiration and generous in my praise”. I told him that I had been hugely entertained and instructed. I told him I wished I had his knowledge. I told him that I should love to wander the fields with him. What’s more, it was all true.‎ And so I had him thinking of me as a good conversationalist when, in reality, I had only been a good listener and had encouraged him to talk.‎ ‎28. From Paragraph 1, we can learn that the writer__________.‎ A. was deeply moved by the botanist’s talk B. was amazed by what he was hearing C. was not in a comfortable situation D. behaved politely and properly ‎29. Which of the following does the writer describe as a rule of politeness at dinner parties?‎ A. Avoiding discussions about politics and religion.‎ B. Listening carefully to what another guest says.‎ C. Arriving and leaving at the appropriate time.‎ D. Giving attention to all those in attendance.‎ ‎30. According to Jack Woodford, most of us like the sweet effect of .‎ A. full understanding                                B. strong interest C. great uncertainty                                   D. little curiosity ‎31. According to the writer, which of the following is an important characteristic of a good conversationalist?‎ A. Listening attentively and encouraging the other side to continue.‎ B. Encouraging the other side by sharing his/her own opinions.‎ C. Promising a future meeting for more communication.‎ D. Expressing respect by nodding his/her head.‎ D A jobless man applied for the position of "office boy" at Microsoft. The HR manager interviewed him and then watched him cleaning the floor as a test. "You are employed," he said. "Give me your e-mail address and I'll send you the application to fill in, as well as date when you may start." The man replied, "But I don't have a computer, neither an e-mail." "I'm sorry," said the HR manager. "If you don't have an e-mail, that means you do not exist. And whoever doesn't exist cannot have the job." ‎ The man left with no hope at all. He didn't know what to do, with only ten dollars in his pocket. He then decided to go to the supermarket and buy 10kg tomatoes. He then sold the tomatoes from door to door. In less than two hours, he succeeded to double his capital(资金). He repeated the operation three times, and returned home happily with 60 dollars. ‎ The man realized that he can survive in this way, and started to go every day earlier, and return late. Thus, his money doubled or tripled every day. Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then ‎ he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles. Five years later, the man is one of the biggest food retailers(零售商)in the US. ‎ He started to plan his family's future and decided to have a life insurance. He called an insurance broker and chose a protection plan. When the conversation was concluded, the broker asked him his e-mail. The man replied, "I don't have an e-mail." The broker answered curiously, "You don't have an e-mail, and yet have succeeded to build an empire. Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an e-mail?" The man thought for a while and replied, "Yes, I'd be an office boy at Microsoft!"‎ ‎32.The jobless man was refused because ______.‎ A. he had no money B. he didn’t have an e-mail address ‎ C. he was lazy D. he didn’t exist ‎33.
