A Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of. A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time it’s important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldn’t have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and it’s important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour. Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it’s best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but it’s not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic(骨盆的) bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck. You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run. 1. What does the underlined word “tingly” (in paragraph 4) mean? A. a slight stinging feeling B. a clear ringing sound C. a pleasant warm feeling D. a strong excitement feeling 2. According to the study, what influence does sitting with your legs crossed have on your health? ①increasing your blood pressure ②neck and back pain ③pressure on the veins and nerves ④permanent nerve damage A.①④ B.③④ C.①②③ D.①②④ 3. What is the purpose of this passage? A. To increase people’s knowledge of sitting with their legs crossed. B. To introduce the bad influences that sitting with their legs crossed has on people. C. B Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone. The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences. For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate. “Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not robust under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration and substantial, relatively immobile setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology. “To mitigate the drawbacks…We created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn.” The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate. The sticker shows four grids of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say. Zhang’s research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May. 4. How does the GazeSpeak app help ALS suffers speak with their eyes and communicate with others? A. It combines a smartphone’s camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time. B. It performs frequent re-calibration and substantial, relatively immobile setups. C. It interprets eye signals and translates them into letters. D. It is designed as a low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn system. 5. What does “they” in the seventh paragraph refer to? A. grids B. speakers C. letters D. movements 6. What can be inferred from the passage? A. For people suffering from ALS, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate. B. Current eye-tracking input systems are expensive, but robust under sunlight. C. The chart stuck to the back of the smartphone is the key to helping ALS suffers. D. Xiaoyi Zhang’s research has not been presented yet. C On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication severe weather was on its way—the sky was blue and the sun had been out. The first alert my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m., from some scrolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel from the presidential primary debate I had been watching to our local Pensacola, Florida, station. No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. Pink insulation flew into the room from a trapdoor to the attic, and the wind began to roar through the house, most likely through blown-out windows and the door to our garage. We had three flights of steps to navigate to get to the relative safety of the first floor. Because the closet down there is wedged underneath a brick staircase, it seemed like the sturdiest place in our town house to wait things out. I didn’t know how or if we would make it down the steps. It felt as if there were no floor underneath me as the wind lifted me off my feet. I gripped the banister and tried to move forward, but this intense pressure held me in place. In those seconds of practical stillness, I could hear everything around me rattling. Everything was moving. As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Shards of glass that looked like crushed ice flew everywhere. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch whipped through the doorframe. It flew over our heads, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us. We got close to the staircase landing only to hear the loud ripping sound of our garage door coming off. The back wall of the house followed suit and tore off into the darkness outside. By the time I reached the closet, the tornado had been over us for about a minute. Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I gripped Jimmy’s arm as the tornado sucked the door open—we never did get it fully shut—and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and scalp were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay. “Hold on! Hold on!” he yelled. But there was nothing in this closet to hold on to. We use it to store Christmas decorations. All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over. Jimmy said he’d go outside to check. “No,” I said. “Don’t leave me. Don’t leave me.” Our neighbor says the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed. Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured. 7. What does the underlined sentence “No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us.” in paragraph 2 mean? A. As soon as the couple found the news of the tornado on the TV, it hit the town. B. When the couple found something to cover their house, the tornado came. C. The couple had not found tornado. Soon, it came on top of them. D. The couple did not have the courage to fight against tornado when it was on the top of them. 8. Which of the following sentences is NOT true about the passage? A. There was no any symbol of the tornado’s coming. B. A three-foot-long tree branch impaled the couple. C. Because of the strong wind, not both of the couple could get into the closet floor. D. Jimmy didn’t fly right out back of the house. 9. Why didn’t the wife feel pain? A. Because she didn’t get any hurt when the storm hit. B. Because she was too scared to feel pain when the tornado was over her. C. Because she devoted all her strength to holding on to her husband. D. Because she had reached the closet and she was safe. 10. What is the main idea of the passage? A. A severe tornado hit the town. B. The disaster should be warned in advance. C. Man can conquer nature. D. The couple experienced an unforgettable 4 minutes. How to Enjoy Life As a Teen The "best years of your life"? Maybe not, but you can learn to make the most of your high school days. 1. Learn to appreciate small things. Whether it's having a computer, having friends, having a good supply of food, a bed to sleep on, family that loves you, having a decent education or simply being born in this world. Remember that the point of life is for you to enjoy it. 11 . Remember that these are the last few years you will be able to enjoy yourself without having to worry about the responsibility of an adult, but make sure you prepare yourself for when you do become one. When you actually become an adult, you'll learn to love that responsibility and you probably never want to go back. 2. 12 . Unlike what many articles state, you don't have to be popular and have a gazillion friends to be happy. In fact, many of the "friends" you have when you are popular are not true friends. Try to have friends that like you who you are, not just because you are wearing a certain brand of shoes or something like that. These are people who shop at the same store as you; not someone who will sympathize with you when your dog dies. 3. Keep your grades up. 13 .This also sets you up to get into a college you want to go to, which in turn prepares you for a career you will enjoy, improving your quality of life in the future. You'll get cheap car insurance as well if you have at least a B or A average. 4. 14 . Participating in clubs, activities, and sports increases your chances of meeting new friends. While you only need 4 or 5 close friends, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to meet new people. Participating gives you something to do instead of sitting bored at home and wallowing in self-pity. 5. Work at a job you can enjoy. Working is a great way to gain experience and to meet other people. 15 .This will look great on your resume. If you can't find work, especially in this hard economic time, volunteer or make your own job. A. You should also find a hobby that is meaningful or practical. B. Be happy, and life will reward you. C. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing your hard work pay off in the form of A's and B's (but mainly A's). D. Choose your friends wisely. E. When you do get out of college, interviewing companies will look at your prior work experience. F. Be sociable. G. Even though you want to enjoy your teen life as best as possible, don't slack off in school. I was walking around in a Big Bazar store doing a shopping, when I saw a Cashier talking to a boy who couldn’t have been more than 5 or 6 years old. Vitamin D can help bones and muscles grow strong and healthy. If a person is short of vitamin D,he or she may have problems like rickets(佝偻病)and osteoporosis.Rickets is mainly found in children.Osteoporosis, the thinning of bone,is a common problem as people get older. Studies in these years have found that vitamin D may also have other uses. If someone is short of vitamin D, he may have heart problems or die from some cancers. The easiest way to get vitamin D is from sunlight. But many people worry about getting skin cancer and skin damage from the sun. Also, even skin color has an influence.Darker skinned people get less vitamin D than lighter skinned people.Older people get less vitamin D than younger people. You can also get it from foods. Some food such as cheese and egg yolks (蛋黄) have some vitamin D.But most of vitamin D in the American diet comes from food like milk with the vitamin added. Now more doctors are testing for vitamin D in their patients. But some doctors worry that if people take too much vitamin D, it might be bad for their body. At the same time, skin doctors tell people to be careful with sunlight. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案解析】 第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分35分) 第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,共25分) A 【文章大意】 本文主要讲述就坐时跷二郎腿对人体健康的危害,呼吁人们改掉这一习惯。 1.【答案】A 【解析】第四段中“…when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your…or have the feeling of being asleep’’” …causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet”” …While the feeling of discomfort…” 故选A。 Zhang’s research…is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May可推断为正确。 7.【答案】A 【解析】下划线句子中“no sooner…than…” 故选A。 On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication severe weather was on its way可知,A正确;第四段Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us. Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay. My knees and scalp were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain.
