His food-loving family had two kitchens, and he quickly learned what was the best way to bake his cakes. Lieberman improved his kitchen skills greatly during a year abroad before college, learning from a cook in Italy and studying local specialties(特色菜) in Germany, Spain, and France. At Yale, he was known for throwing dinner parties, single-handedly frying and baking while mixing drinks for dozens of friends. Just for fun, he and some friends decided to tape a show named campus cuisine(菜肴) about his cooking. Lieberman was a real college student showing his classmates how to do things like making drinks out of dining-hall fruit. That helped the show become very popular among the students. They would stop Lieberman after classes to ask for his advice on cooking. Tapes of the show were passed around, with which his name went beyond the school and finally to the Food Network. Food Network producer Flay hopes the young cook will find a place on the network television. He says Lieberman’s charisma is key. “Food TV isn’t about food anymore,” says Flay. “It’s about your personality and finding a way to keep people’s eyeballs on your show.” But Lieberman isn’t putting all his eggs in one basket. After taping the first season of the new show, Lieberman was back in his own small kitchen preparing sandwiches. An airline company was looking for someone to come up with a tasteful, inexpensive and easy- to-make menu to serve on its flights. Lieberman got the job. 21.We can learn from the text that Lieberman’s family_______. A. He is clever but lonely. B. He is friendly and active. C. He enjoys traveling around. D. He often changes his menus. B If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language? According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "earlybilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference. "Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),"he said. "You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas." The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. "Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world," explained the scientists. 25.The main subject talked about in this passage is ______. A. science on learning a second language B. man’s ability of learning a second language C. 1anguage can help brain power D. 1anguage learning and maths study 26.In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to ______. A. say language is also a kind of physical labor B. prove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language C. to show the importance of using the language when you learn the language D. make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well 27.The underlined word “bilingual'’ probably means ______. A. a researcher on language learning B. a person who is good at learning foreign languages C. a person who can speak two languages D. an active language learner C Japanese researchers are genetically changing mosquitoes so that they become carriers of a vaccine (疫苗) that could vaccinate millions for free. The researchers have already genetically changed a mosquito species so that its saliva (唾液) contains a protein that acts as a vaccine against leishmaniasis(利什曼病), a deadly disease that leads to terrible skin problems. The team confirmed that mice bitten by the genetically-engineered mosquito developed an antibody to the disease, meaning they had built up immunity (免疫力). “You would be vaccinated without even noticing. You wouldn’t need any drug and you wouldn’t need to show up at a fixed place for mass vaccinations,” said Shigeto Yoshida, the associate professor who has led the research. “Repeated bites would only strengthen the immunity.” Similarly the mosquitoes could be used to help treat malaria (疟疾), perhaps a decade from now, said the malaria expert. Nearly one million people die each year from malaria ---- most of them are children ---- mainly in Africa and Asia, according to the World Health Organization. Now a problem is that no effective vaccine exists. “There is a treatment that works, but it is beyond the reach of people who need to worry about food for tomorrow,” Yoshida said. However, Yoshida expects that the genetically-engineered mosquito will finally help wipe out the deadly disease in the developing world. “Technically speaking, I believe it’s a matter of 10 years or so, but it’s not clear whether society would accept it,” he said. Another problem is that the genetically-engineered mosquito may still pick up and spread the infected blood of a person who has already caught malaria. Yoshida’s team is hoping it can solve this problem by developing a mosquito species that kills the malaria virus inside its own body. 28.How have scientists turned mosquitoes into carriers of a vaccine? A. By changing their genes. B. By killing the virus in their bodies. C. By letting them bite mice. D. By injecting vaccines into their bodies. 29.Which of the following is NOT an advantage of using mosquitoes as vaccine carriers? A. It’s free of charge. B. It’s convenient. C. It’s more effective. D. It’s unnoticeable. 30.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs? A. People welcome the idea of using mosquitoes to treat malaria. B. Mosquitoes carrying vaccines may still spread malaria. C. It is not long before people will use mosquitoes to get rid of malaria. D. A mosquito can kill the malaria virus inside its own body. 31.The main purpose of the passage is to . A. introduce a possible solution to malaria B. encourage people to use mosquitoes to fight against diseases C. show that Japan has very advanced technology D. call on people to help people suffering from malaria in Africa and Asia D Ridgewood is a small town 20 miles from Manhattan, New York. It is a quiet town, perfect for raising children away from the rapid pace of the city. However, besides hours of homework, many Ridgewood children have too many afterschool activities-from swimming to piano classes. Some kids compare their life to that of a New York general manager who has an 80hour workweek. Children's schedules filled with homework and activities made a lot of townspeople worried, so the town decided to start a movement called “Ridgewood Family Night-Ready, Set, Relax!” The mayor (市长) made a public statement, calling for a townwide night for families to do nothing. And schools and clubs agreed to support the movement so families could relax and get together. Some parents like to talk about their childhood, one without so many scheduled afterschool activities. As kids, they just went out to play with neighborhood friends after school. However, almost all these parents take their children to their regularly scheduled activities. These fathers and mothers feel it is their duty to make sure their children are prepared to survive in today's highpressure work environment. They are afraid that their children can't enter the “right” universities and won't succeed in a more and more competitive world. However, it seems that Family Night worked, at least to a certain degree. Cars moved freely around Ridgewood's normally busy downtown streets. Some families ate supper together for the first time in months. One family watched home movies of when the children were little, baked cookies and played games together. At first, some people were excited that they could take back their lives. But sadly, few families now believe that one night will change them. Nearly all of the townspeople are sure that they will fall back into the old habit. 32.Which of the following can be used to describe the life of Ridgewood children? A. Really exiting. B. Very relaxing. C. Quite peaceful. D. Terribly busy. 33.How can people benefit from Family Night? A. They can learn and share knowledge. B. They can rest and enjoy family time. C. They have more time to discuss family matters. D. They have enough time to talk about schoolwork. 34.What is most important for kids in the eyes of Ridgewood parents? A. Spending a happy childhood. B. Doing things at their own pace. C. Working hard for a better future. D. Enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle. 35.How do most Ridgewood people look at Family Night? A. It won't change their lifestyle. B. It will help take back their lives. C. It can't be accepted by the public. D. It may help break kids' bad habits. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Make Friends Friendship is a very important human relationship and everyone needs good friends.46.It offers companionship, improves self-worth and promotes good health.
