Janet Lincoln is a salesgirl who moved to St. Louis five years ago. Here’s what Janet told us: “Five years ago I used to live in a small town called Lemon Falls. I grew up and went to high school there. After I graduated I worked in a supermarket. Lemon Falls had a population of about 800 people, and I knew every single one of them. They all knew everything about me, too.You couldn’t do anything without everyone in town knowing about it. The first chance I got I moved to St. Louis and I love it. I don't know as many people now as I used to, but that’s OK. I have a few good friends, and I see them when I want to. I kind of like being anonymous. I’d never go back to Lemon Falls.” Troy Henson had the opposite experience. He and his wife, Darla, and their two children moved from St. Louis to Bloomfield three years ago. Here’s what Troy told us: “The best thing we ever did was get out of St. Louis. Don’t get me wrong; St. Louis is as good a place as any other city, I suppose - if you like cities, that is. We don’t. Both Darla and I grew up in St. Louis. We met at college and got married. Then the kids came along and life got difficult. We didn’t know any of our neighbors. We both had good jobs, but it always seemed like there was never enough money. That all changed when we moved to Bloomfield. I don’t make as much money as I used to, but then we don’t have as many expenses(开销) as we did. We know our neighbors. Life is good. We’d never leave Bloomfield.” 24. C In January 2012, two seventeen-year-old Canadian students, Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad, put a LEGO man in the Earth’s upper atmosphere(高层大气). The two worked on the project every Saturday for four months. They decided to spend no more than $500. They bought a weather balloon - the kind of balloon that scientists use to get information about the weather. They bought some helium (氦气). Then, they made a parachute(降落伞).They bought three second-hand cameras and a video camera. They made a very light box to hold the cameras and a cell phone with a GPS. The GPS was to let them follow the balloon on its trip. They fixed the parachute and the box to the weather balloon. Then they added a LEGO man carrying a Canadian flag. They didn’t want the wind to blow their balloon out of Canada and into the US, so they waited for the right wind conditions. Then one Saturday morning, the weather was just right. The boys hurried to a football field and worked quickly. They turned on the cameras and cell phone’s GPS, filled the balloon with helium and let it go. They watched the GPS signal(信号) on Mathew’s iPad. After a while the GPS signal stopped and the boys went home. About ninety minutes later, the signal started again. The LEGO man was coming back to the Earth! The boys found him in a field 122 kilometers away. When they saw the video movie and the 1,500 photographs, they shouted with excitement! The LEGO man had traveled up about 24 kilometers. Behind him, the pictures showed the curve ( 曲线 ) of the Earth and the blackness of space. 28. What did the boys do to avoid the LEGO man flying into the US? A. They waited for the right weather. B. They made a large parachute. C. They used a helium balloon. D. They made a very light box. 29. Travel with a LEGO man D Driving a car is greatly more stressful(有压力的) than travelling by bus, according to a new research. A study by Dr David Lewis will be used as a major part of the Greener Journeys campaign(运动). The aim is to persuade motorists up and down the country to abandon(放弃) their cars for one billion journeys in the next four years-in favor of travelling by bus. Dr Lewis made an experiment in heart rate and Electro dermal Response ( EDR, 皮肤电反应 ) of 30 volunteers were measured(被测量) when taking similar journeys by car as a driver and by bus as a passenger. The results indicated that stress was, on average, 33 percent lower when travelling by bus. EDR measures the change in the response of a person’s skin to anxiety(焦虑) or stress. EDR can be a hidden stress. This type of stress can have long-term physical and emotional impacts. Taking a bus can produce long-term benefits. Dr Lewis said there are three main factors that make driving a car stressful: heavy traffic causes the brain to work harder; traffic jams cause anger and there is a sense of frustration that person is “wasting one’s life” because few things can be done at the same time as driving. The Greener Journeys campaign will encourage people to get out of their cars and go by bus. Claire Haigh, a spokesman for Greener Journeys, said the findings might persuade drivers - who were already concerned about CO2 emissions - that travelling by bus had health benefits as well as environmental ones. A fifth of motorists would be prepared to turn to public transport for reasons to do with the environment. 32. What is the purpose of the Greener Journeys campaign? A. To help people save plenty of money. B. To call on people to take buses instead of driving cars. C. To attract more visitors who enjoy taking buses. D. To improve the financial situation of bus companies. 33. According to the passage, EDR______. A. can measure the heart rate B. can reflect people’s anxiety or stress C. has an immediate effect on health D. may create long-term benefits 34. From the passage we know that______. A. governments should limit the production of cars A. taking buses is good for health and environment C. taking cars is the main cause of greenhouse gas emissions D. buses are the main means of transportation nowadays 35. We may read the passage online in the section of______.
