There was not one night that I don’t remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired by the wonderful way the words sounded. I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing mom say, “I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading. This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said, “The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed. Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests. Sometimes, I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn’t enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts, things that are concrete. I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument. Now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex, I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don’t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax. We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is an important part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless. 4. Why did the author want to grab the newspaper out of mom’s hands? A. She wanted mom to read the news to her. B. She couldn’t wait to tear the newspaper apart. C. She couldn’t help but stop mom from reading. D. She was eager to know what had happened. 5. According to Paragraph 3, the author’s reading of road signs shows___________. A. her own way to find herself B. her eagerness to develop her reading ability C. her growing desire to know the world around her D. her effort to remind mom to obey traffic rules 6. The author takes novel reading as a way to___________. A. explore a mysterious land B. develop an interest in learning C. get away from a confusing world D. learn about the adult world 7. What could be the best title for the passage? A. The Pleasure of Reading B. Growing Up with Reading C. The Magic of Reading D. Reading Makes a Full Man 【答案】4. D 5. C 6. C 7. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character.(我发现自己需要一种逃避的方式,打开一本小说,我可以放下负担,进入一个奇妙而神秘的世界,在那里我现在是一个新角色。) I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don’t remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired by the wonderful way the words sounded.(我一直都知道读书是很重要的,因为我小时候的第一段记忆就是读书。 B。 C Why are people interested in eating raw foods or whole foods? One reason is that eating these types of food reduces the risk of acid accumulation in your body. Raw and whole foods are usually digested more efficiently than cooked and refined foods. When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes (酶) that are part of the food in its raw form. These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without these natural enzymes, our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream. In both instances, the result is obesity. When too many nutrients are absorbed at once, the body grows fat. Improperly digested food moves slowly through the digestive tract, where it becomes increasingly acidic. To protect its vital organs from this acidic waste, the body changes the acid into fat and stores it safely away from the organs. Processed foods contain chemical elements, which might confuse the appetite mechanism that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat; as a result, people often overeat. Processed foods also upset the digestive cycle. The body will either identify these foods as allergens and then store them safely away from the organs as fat, or the remains of undigested food will become acidic and enter the bloodstream as acid waste, which will stick to the blood vessel walls and block the passage of vital oxygen and nutrients heading for the body’s cells. The body’s metabolism (新陈代谢) becomes inactive, and the result is weight gain and obesity. The accumulation of acid in the digestive tract makes digestion increasingly inefficient. When that happens, even healthy foods can become acidic and the food allergies will become more common. To stop thisviciouscircle in its tracks, people need to consume food and supplements that will neutralize the acid already accumulated in body. Eating the right types of raw and whole foods can help. It’s also important to restore your enzyme balance. You need to identify and avoid the foods that cause acid accumulation and consume the foods that increase enzyme production. If you truly want to change and help your body heal itself, you need to take an active approach. 8. It can be inferred from Para. 2 that __________. A. foods with natural enzymes help people keep fit B. we’d better be cautious about raw and whole foods C. it is essential for people to protect their vital organs D. giving up cooked and refined foods is a new lifestyle 9. Processed foods are unhealthy because they __________. A. destroy body’s cells B. stop body’s metabolism C. may lead to obesity D. are difficult to digest 10. What is the main purpose of this passage? A. To warn people of the problem of obesity. B. To advocate eating more raw and whole foods. C. To inform people of the harm of processed foods. D. To tell the differences between raw and processed foods. 11. The underline word “vicious” in the last paragraph probably means ____________. A. violent B. progressive C. positive D. harmful 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. 【9题详解】 根据文章中的第三段中所讲的Processed foods 的坏处:“might confuse the appetite mechanism that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat”以及“upset the digestive cycle”,进而文章再讲这两种情况都会导致过度肥胖,因此可推断选C正确。 D。 D Before uploading a photo of ourselves to social media, chances are that we’ll use an app to smooth our skin, make our eyes look bigger, and lips fuller. With a couple of taps on our mobile phone, we can get a quick fix and present the “best” version of ourselves to the world. However, the problem is, when we simply edit our imperfections away, we’re also changing the way we look at ourselves. Last month, researchers published the article Selfies – Living in the Era of Filtered(过滤的) Photographs. The article analyzed photo editing apps’ bad influences on people’s self-respect and their possibility to cause appearance anxieties. The researchers also warned that such apps make it difficult to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. “These apps allow one to change his or her appearance in minutes and follow an unrealistic standard of beauty,” the article reads. In the past, people may have compared their looks to those of famous persons. But for today’s young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they see on social media. “From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look.” British cosmetic doctor Tijion Esho told The Independent. This is why many young people suffer an identity trouble when it comes to appearance. “Now you’ve got this daily comparison of your real self to this fake self that you present on social media.” Renee Engeln, a professor of psychology, told the HuffPost website. Engeln further pointed out that when people spend too much time making such comparisons, they may become “beauty sick” and find it difficult to accept what they actually look like. “Because between you and the world is a mirror, it’s a mirror that travels with you everywhere. You can’t seem to put it down.” she told The Washington Post. So when we look in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think to ourselves, “Do I look as good as myself in the filtered photos?” Instead, we should think, “I feel good; I have my health.” 12. Before uploading a photo to social media, we will probably ______. A. have an operation to make our eyes look bigger. B. use some cream to smooth our skin C. use an app to fix our photo D. edit our perfections away 13. What can we learn from Paragraph 2? A. In many ways, photo edition apps are beneficial to people. B. Photo editing apps are likely to cause people’s anxieties about their appearance. C. Photo editing apps can make us more beautiful. D. Photo editing apps help people judge realistic beauty. 14. When it comes to appearance, why do many young people suffer an identity trouble? A. Because they compare their looks to those of famous persons. B. Because beauty standards are set by social media. C. Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their own likes and dislikes. D. Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their appearance. 15. According to Engeln, we should _______. A. feel good about what we actually look like B. spend more time making comparison of our real self to fake self C. take a mirror with us everywhere D. try to look as good as ourselves in the filtered photos 【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. Before uploading a photo of ourselves to social media, chances are that we’ll use an app to smooth our skin, make our eyes look bigger, and lips fuller.(在将自己的照片上传到社交媒体之前,我们很可能会使用一款应用程序来光滑皮肤,让眼睛看起来更大,嘴唇更丰满。) The article analyzed photo editing apps’ bad influences on people’s self-respect and their possibility to cause appearance anxieties.(这篇文章分析了照片编辑软件对人们自尊的不良影响,以及可能导致的外观焦虑。) 根据第三段中“From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look.” British cosmetic doctor Tijion Esho told The Independent. This is why many young people suffer an identity trouble when it comes to appearance.(“从出生开始,他们就生活在一个社交平台的时代,在这个时代里,他们的自我价值感完全可以基于他们的点赞和粉丝数量,而这与他们的外表好坏有关。” So when we look in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think to ourselves, “Do I look as good as myself in the filtered photos?” Instead, we should think, “I feel good; I have my health.”(所以当我们照镜子的时候,我们不应该对自己说:“我在过滤过的照片里看起来和我自己一样好吗?” 故选A。 如第三小题,根据第三段中“From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look.” British cosmetic doctor Tijion Esho told The Independent. This is why many young people suffer an identity trouble when it comes to appearance.(“从出生开始,他们就生活在一个社交平台的时代,在这个时代里,他们的自我价值感完全可以基于他们的点赞和粉丝数量,而这与他们的外表好坏有关。” Much of the work in today’s world is accomplished(完成) in teams. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals. _____16_____Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent? ___17___They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed. For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent; above that level, the team’s performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn’t evident in baseball, where additional individual talent keeps improving the team’s performance. To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调) their actions. ______18______In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is, for example, trying to gain a high personal point total, he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team’s performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told, “There is no I in TEAM.” ___19___ Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河比赛), whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force. ___20___ An A-team may require a balance——not just A players, but a few generous B players as well. A. It’s not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent. B. Sports team owners spend millions of dollars attracting top talent. C. The group interaction and its effect drew the researchers’ attention. D. Stars apparently do not follow this basic principle of sportsmanship. E. Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world. F. Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent. G. This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball. B 17. E 18. G 19. D 20.
