However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata (奏鸣曲)by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him. Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable .They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn’t even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music. Samuel can’t understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons. It comes easily to me ---I hear the notes and can bear them in mind---each and every note,” says Samuel. Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can’t play it. Samuel says confidently,” It’s all about super memory---I guess I have that gift.” However, Samuel’s ability to remember things doesn’t stop with music. His family says that even when he was a young boy , Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word. Samuel is still only a teenager. He doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future. For now, he is just happy to play beautiful music and continue his studies. 25. What can we learn from Paragraph 2 ? A. Samuel chose law against the wish of his parents. B. Samuel planned to be a lawyer rather than a musician. C. Samuel thinks of himself as a man of great musical ability. D. Samuel studies law and music on the advice of his teachers. 26. What can we infer about Samuel in Paragraph 4 ? A. He became famous during a special event at his college. B. He is proud of his ability to remember things accurately. C. He plays the piano better than many professional pianists. D. He impressed the audience by playing all the musical pieces. 27. Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A. The Qualities of a Musician B. The Story of a Musical Talent C. The Importance of Early Education D. The Relationship between Memory and Music. C A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑). Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility(清 晰度). But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught. Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes “mindlessly” by taking down word for word what the professors said. In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts. The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts. The researchers’ report said, “While more notes arc beneficial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears.” In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam. These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes arc not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future. 28. While taking notes, laptop users tend to be . A. skillful B. mindless C. thoughtful D. tireless 29. The author of the passage aims to . A. examine the importance of long-term memory B. stress the benefit of taking notes by hand C. explain the process of taking notes D. promote the use of laptops 30. The passage is likely to appear in . A. a newspaper advertisement B. a computer textbook C. a science magazine D. a finance report 第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。有两项为多余选项。 Every boy and every girl expects their parents to give them more pocket money. Why do their parents just give them a certain amount? 31 The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. 32 Some children get weekly pocket money. Others get monthly pocket money. First of all, children are expected to make a choice between spending and saving. Then parents should make the children understand what is expected to pay for with the money. At first, some young children may spend all of the money soon after they receive it. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until it is the right time. 33 In order to encourage their children to do some housework, some parents give pocket money if the children help around the home. Some experts think it not wise to pay the children for doing that. 34 Pocket money can give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with the money. They can spend it by giving it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. 35 Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice. Saving can also open the door to future saving and investing for children. A. One main purpose is to let kids learn how to manage their own money. B. Some children are good at managing their pocket money. C. Because helping at home is a normal part of family life. D. By doing so, these children will learn that spending must be done with a budget(预算). E. Learning how to make money is very important for every child. F. They can save it for future use. G. I walked to the door and knocked, "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice. After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase. I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car. She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated." "Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?" "It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly. "Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice (临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long life. " I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence Lo the address she had given me. "How much do I owe you?" she asked. "Nothing." I said. "You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered.
