‎ ‎1‎ ‎ The GIF – or graphics interchange format – has become an important part of today’s meme (表情包) culture. But there have been heated debates when it comes to the word’s pronunciation. Should it be pronounced with a hard G, as in “give”, or a soft G, as in “gentle”?‎ The debate should have been put to rest(平息)back in 2013, ‎ when Steve Wilhite, who invented the GIF in 1987, said in an interview ‎ with The New York Times that the right way to pronounce GIF is “JIF”, with a soft G.v ‎ But people aren’t easily convinced. Web designer Dan Cederholm once wrote on Twitter: “Graphics Interchange Format. Graphics. Not Jraphics.” This actually makes a lot of sense.‎ ‎ To find out what people really think of the word, a survey in June by StackOverflow, a forum for computer programmers, interviewed over 50,000 Internet users in nearly 200 countries. The results showed that GIF with a hard G is the more widely accepted pronunciation, with 65 percent of respondents voting for it, while only 26 percent went for the soft G. ‎ ‎ But there may a bug here. According to The Economist, many respondents may have chosen the hard G simply because they don’t have a soft G in their language – people who speak Spanish, for example. This could have led to a biased(偏倚的)result.‎ ‎ After a correction was made to the survey, the result came out more even, with 44 percent voting for hard G and 32 percent for soft G. The rest of the respondents actually went for the third choice – saying each letter separately as “jee eye eff”, which is most common in Asia, especially in China and South Korea.‎ ‎ It may look like the hard G is taking the lead no matter what. But as The Economist pointed out, “Just because a belief is popular does not make it right.” The Oxford English Dictionary and Merriam-Webster aren’t picking sides either. They said that both pronunciations are equally acceptable.‎ ‎ So maybe it depends entirely on you. Just choose whichever one that sounds good – or rather, “jood” – to you.‎ ‎56. According to the article, what was the problem with the survey?‎ ‎ A. It only covered a small number of countries.‎ ‎ B. It misled people to pronounce GIF with a hard G.‎ ‎ C. Its respondents were mainly computer programmers.‎ ‎ D. It didn’t consider influences from respondents’ native languages.‎ ‎57. The corrected results of the survey show that ______________.‎ ‎ A. most people favor GIF with a hard G ‎ B. more people say GIF with a soft G ‎ C. most Asians prefer to pronounce GIF as separate letters ‎ D. most people can’t decide the pronunciation of GIF ‎【答案】56-57. D C ‎ ‎2‎ I’d always wondered what the point of traveling was. If we’re only going to end up back in our daily routine anyway, aren’t we just cheating ourselves?‎ Sept 27 is World Tourism Day. It also happens to be exactly three months from the day my three friends and I left for a one-week trip to Moalboal, Philippines, to learn scuba diving(水肺潜水).‎ ‎ It wasn’t the typical relaxing vacation that most people would have taken. We spent our first morning sitting in a room watching tutorial videos, while the rest of the days we would practice what we’d learned from the video with our instructor, first in the pool and then in the sea. Every day, we had to dress ourselves up in a tight diving suit and a jacket with a heavy steel tank on the back.‎ But somehow, the experience changed us.‎ For starters, it allowed us to get to know ourselves better. When we had to fully concentrate on our breathing underwater – even a little bit of difference in the amount of air we breathed in or out could have changed our buoyancy(浮力)– we started to realize how we’d been taking it for granted and had never truly “felt” ourselves breathe.‎ And its influence continues.‎ During the three months that we’ve been back from the trip, we’ve visited two diving expositions – something we wouldn’t have been interested in before – where we learned about free diving, which is diving holding your breath, without an extra supply of air. We were fascinated and signed up for free diving courses without hesitation. Just like that, we got ourselves yet another new hobby.‎ The trip also gave me the idea of documenting our underwater adventure in the form of a film. I knew nothing about filmmaking, so I decided to teach myself how to use movie-editing software. Two months of trial and error later, I ended up with a pretty satisfactory 20-minute-long film, and I can now add “moviemaker” to my list of achievements, next to “scuba diver”.‎ ‎ Six months ago, did I expect all these new experiences would be in my future? Of course not.‎ ‎ So while it may be true that there’s no escape from our daily routine, at least by traveling we can always escape our “old self”, and maybe even pick up some new skills.‎ ‎58. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this article?‎ ‎ A. To share her diving experience.‎ ‎ B. To describe her passion for scuba diving.‎ ‎ C. To encourage readers to learn to dive.‎ ‎ D. To explore the purpose of traveling.‎ ‎59. During their trip to Moalboal, the author and her friends _____________.‎ ‎ A. enjoyed a typical relaxing vacation ‎ B. found it easy to breathe under the sea ‎ C. spent most of their time learning and practicing diving ‎ D. went diving in the sea right after watching tutorial videos ‎60. What message does the author intend to convey in the text?‎ ‎ A. Traveling is a good way to relax.‎ ‎ B. Traveling is a time for adventure.‎ ‎ C. Traveling lets us discover a new side of ourselves.‎ ‎ D. Traveling is simply an escape from our daily routines.‎ ‎【答案】58-60. D C C ‎ ‎3‎ Dear Alcohol,‎ You’ve been around forever. I can remember all the pain you’ve caused for me.‎ Do you remember the night you almost took my father’s life? I do. He loves you. Sometimes I think he loves you more than he loves me. He’s addicted to you, to the way you promise to rid him of his problems only to cause more of them. You just sat back and laughed as his car went spinning through the street, crashing into two other cars. He wasn’t the only one hurt by you that night.‎ ‎ Do you remember the night of my first high school party? You were there. My friends were intrigued(被迷住了的) by you. They treated you as if they were never going to see you again, drinking all of you that they could. I spent two hours that night helping my friends who had fallen completely. “I’m so embarrassed,” they said as I held their hair back so that they could vomit(呕吐). “I’m sorry,” they said when I called taxies for them, walking them out and paying the driver in advance. “This won’t happen again,” they said as they were sent to the hospital to have their stomachs pumped. Two 15-year-old girls slept in hospital beds that night thanks to you.‎ Do you remember the night when you took advantage of my 17-year-old neighbor who had to drive to pick up his sister from her dance lessons? Do you know how we all felt when he hit another car and killed the two people in the other car? He died the next morning too. His sister walked home from her dance lesson, and passed police cars and a crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk just two blocks away from the dance studio. She didn’t realize her brother was in the midst of it all. She never saw him again. And it’s all your fault.‎ ‎ I wish you’d walk out of my life forever. I don’t want anything to do with you. Look at all ‎ the pain you’ve caused. Sure, you’ve made people happy too from time to time. But the damage you’ve caused in the lives of millions is inexcusable. Stop luring(诱惑)in the people I love. Stop hurting me, please.‎ ‎ Sincerely,‎ Anonymous ‎61. What is author’s purpose in writing to alcohol?‎ ‎ A. To introduce Mr. Alcohol to the readers.‎ ‎ B. Tony Trivisonno did not rise as high as the White House, yet he managed to make his own dream come true. ‎ He came from a farm in Italy. One evening I found him standing behind my garage. “I mow(割草)your lawn,” he said. It was hard to comprehend his broken English. ‎ I asked him his name. “Tony Trivisonno,” he replied. “I mow your lawn.” I told Tony that I couldn't afford a gardener. ‎ ‎ “I mow your lawn,” he said again, then walked away. Yes, these Depression days were difficult, but how could I refuse a person who had come to me for help? ‎ ‎ When I got home from work the next evening, the lawn had been mowed and the walks swept. I asked my wife what had happened. ‎ ‎“A man had worked on the yard,” she answered. “I thought you had hired him.” ‎ I told her of my experience the night before. We thought it strange that Tony had not asked for pay. ‎ The next Friday, I saw Tony again, behind the garage. I praised him for the work he had done. ‎ ‎“I mow your lawn,” he said. ‎ I managed to give him some kind of small weekly pay, and each day Tony cleaned up the yard and took care of any little tasks. My wife said he was very helpful whenever there were anything heavy to lift or things to fix. ‎ Summer passed into fall, and winds blew cold. “Mr. Craw, snow pretty soon,” Tony told me one evening. “When winter comes, you give me job clearing snow at the factory.” ‎ ‎ Well, how do you deal with such determination and hope? Of course, Tony got his job at the factory. ‎ ‎ One day I found Tony at our meeting place behind the garage. "I want to be apprentice(学徒)" he said. ‎ We had a pretty good apprentice school that trained workers. But I doubted whether Tony were able to read blueprints or do precision work. Still, how could I turn him down? ‎ Tony took a cut in pay to become an apprentice. Months later, I got a report that he had graduated as a skilled grinder(磨工). My wife and I were delighted with what Tony had achieved. ‎ A year or two passed, and again I found Tony in his usual waiting place. “Mr. Craw,” he said, “I like to buy a house.” In the town, he had found a completely old house for sale. ‎ ‎ I called on a banker friend. “Do you ever loan money on character?” I asked. “No,” he said. ‎ ‎“Now, wait a minute,” I replied. "Here is a hard-working man, a man of character, I can promise you that. He's got a good job. And he will pay your interest." ‎ ‎ Unwillingly, the banker loaned Tony $2,000 and helped him buy the house. Tony was delighted. From then on, it was interesting to see that any abandoned odds and ends around our place were gathered and taken home by Tony. ‎ After about two years, I found Tony in our familiar meeting spot. He seemed to stand a little straighter and looked confident. ‎ ‎ “Mr. Craw, I sell the house and buy a farm.” ‎ ‎ We sat down and talked. He told me that he had persuaded his childhood friend to move to America. With a satisfied look in his eye, he told me that when they came to his little farm, his friend stood in amazement and said, "Tony, you are a millionaire!" ‎ ‎ Then, during the World WarⅡ, news came from my company that Tony had passed away. ‎ ‎ When my people came to visit his family, they found the farm green with vegetables, the little house comfortable and homey. The children were educated and working, and Tony didn't owe a cent. ‎ ‎ Tony, as well as all the greatest American businessmen, had reached their success in the same way and by the same values: vision, determination, optimism, self-respect and, above all, honesty. ‎ Tony Trivisonno came to America seeking the American Dream. But he didn't find it — he created it for himself. All he had were 24 precious hours a day, and he wasted none of them. ‎ ‎65. Why did Tony repeat “I mow your lawn”? ‎ ‎ A. He asked for pay for his excellent garden work. ‎ ‎ B. He was determined to get a chance to work. ‎ ‎ C. He thought he was good at garden work. ‎ ‎ D. He was ready to help others out. ‎ ‎66. Which of the following sentences brought out Tony’s character of honesty? ‎ ‎ A. Tony was very helpful whenever there were anything heavy to lift or things to fix. ‎ ‎ B. Tony persuaded his childhood friend to move to America. ‎ ‎ C. Any abandoned odds and ends around our place were gathered and taken home by Tony. ‎ ‎ D. The children were educated and working and Tony didn't owe a cent. ‎ ‎67. What did the author mean by saying “Do you ever loan money on character”? ‎ ‎ A. He thought a determined and diligent man should get a loan despite poverty. ‎ ‎ B. He was asking the banker the way the banks loan money to people.‎ ‎ C. He was begging the banker to help Tony for the sake of their personal relation. ‎ ‎ D. He supposed a loan should be given to people according to their characters. ‎ ‎68. The fact that Tony sold his house and bought a farm indicated that Tony is a man of __________. ‎ ‎ A. honesty B. optimism C. self-respect D. vision ‎69. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? ‎ ‎ A. The author refused Tony’s offer of mowing the lawn when they first met. ‎ ‎ B. The author didn’t pay Tony for his cleaning up the yard. ‎ ‎ C. The author doubted Tony’s being a good apprentice due to his poor education. ‎ ‎ D. A mathematical analysis of the connections among definitions of English words has uncovered hidden structures that may resemble the way words and their meanings are represented in our minds.‎ ‎“We want to know how the mental vocabulary is represented in the brain,” says Stevan Harnad of the University of Quebec in Montreal, Canada.‎ As every word in a dictionary is defined (下定义) in terms of others, the knowledge needed to understand the entire vocabulary is there. Harnad’s team reasoned that finding this smallest set of words and pinning down its structure might help research on how human brains put language together.‎ The team changed each of four different English dictionaries into a mathematical structure of linked nodes (节点) known as a graph. Each node in this graph represents a word, which is linked to the other words used to define it — so “banana” might be connected to “long”, “bendy”, “yellow”, and “fruit”.‎ But even this tiny set is not the smallest number of words you need to produce the whole dictionary, as many of these words can in turn be fully defined by others in the kernel (核心). What’s more, the kernel has a deeper structure.‎ So what, if anything, can this tell us about how our brains represent words and concepts? To find out the answer, Harnad’s team looked at data on how children acquire words and found a ‎ pattern: as you move in from the full dictionary towards the kernel, words which have been acquired at a younger age tend to be used more often, and refer to more concrete concepts.‎ But the connection does suggest that our brains may structure language somewhat similarly to a dictionary.‎ Phil Blunsom, at University of Oxford isn’t convinced that word meanings can be reduced to a chain of definitions. “It’s treating words in such a symbolic fashion that they are going to lose a lot of the meaning.” But Mark Pagel of the University of Reading, UK, expects the approach to new insights. “This will be most useful in giving us a sense of how our minds structure meaning.” he says. ‎ ‎53. The first paragraph serves as a(n) ______ in the passage.‎ ‎ A. comparison between human brains and a dictionary ‎ B. introduction to the question whether your brain works like a dictionary ‎ C. conclusion that your brain is just like a dictionary ‎ D. contradiction between definitions of English words ‎54. What does the underlined phrase “pinning down” in Paragraph 3 mean here?‎ ‎ A. making clearly B. fixing firmly ‎ C. explaining simply D. putting formally ‎55. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?‎ ‎ A. Children acquire words and form patterns more easily than adults.‎ B. Our brains may structure language exactly similarly to a dictionary.‎ ‎ C. Harnad’s findings may explain how human brains put language together.‎ ‎ D Many of the words can in turn be fully defined by using its similar words.‎ ‎【答案】53. B 54. A 55. C ‎ ‎7‎ What if one day Facebook, Twitter and Instant Messenger just weren’t there?‎ Provost Eric Darr of Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Pennsylvania tells NPR’s (National Public Radio) Guy Raz that he wanted his students to not only think about this question, but live it.‎ ‎“Often there are behaviors, habits, ways we use technology that we may ourselves not even be able to express clearly because we’re not aware of them,” Darr says.‎ So this week, Darr will enforce (强制执行) a campus-wide social media cutoff — no Facebook, no Twitter, no instant messaging — nothing.‎ Social Media Exile Access to these popular social media tools will be blocked from campus computers through the week. This is not a disciplinary (纪律上的) exercise, Darr says, but an academic one. At the end of the week, students will write reflective essays about their time without social media. ‎ Three Harrisburg University students, Ashley Harris, Gio Acosta and Oluyemi Afuape, volunteered to discuss the experiment, and it turns out they have mixed feelings.‎ Afuape isn’t a big fan of Facebook, and says he doesn’t expect to be challenged by the cutoff.‎ ‎ But Harris is going to have a hard time not posting her whereabouts to friends.‎ ‎“My biggest problem is not being able to find people,” Harris says, “because I use Facebook and Twitter to find people at school, to see where they’re at.”‎ Even before hearing about the cutoff, Acosta found it necessary to cut himself off the constant social media chatter.‎ ‎“I had my phone set to receive Facebook, texts, tweets — and ring — so I had to turn that off between 3 and 6 in the morning so I can actually sleep during that time” Acosta says. “If you don’t set the limits, it’s a 24-hour thing.”‎ Hope From The “Post-Facebook Generation”‎ Outspoken social media critic Jaron Lanier (who was also named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of the year) says Harrisburg University’s experiment may be too extreme. He would prefer that students donate a penny to charity every time they access social media.‎ ‎“Because that would create awareness, they would be aware of how much they were doing,” Lanier says, “making the use of it into something that’s more conscious and more considered.”‎ Lanier is mainly worried that social media creates superficial ties rather than lasting friendship. But he says he’s optimistic about the “post-Facebook generation” — teenagers he hears from in high schools who don’t identify with Facebook.‎ Lanier hopes this generation will act differently, declaring, “No, we are individuals; we invent ourselves; we’re not going to have some third-party advertising business define us. We invent our own taste, and furthermore, we decide what friendship means.” ‎ ‎56. What do the underlined words “live it” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to?‎ ‎ A. Making a living without the Internet. B. Leading a life without social media.‎ ‎ C. Experiencing the popularity of social media. D. Being aware of the importance of technology.‎ ‎57. What do we know about the cutoff experiment?‎ ‎ A. The experiment lasted a week and was very successful.‎ ‎ B. Only three students participated in the experiment.‎ C. The participants had terrible feelings toward the cutoff.‎ ‎ D. The experiment had something to do with students’ schoolwork.‎ ‎58. What is Lanier’s opinion about the experiment?‎ ‎ A. The university should do the experiment in a more proper way.‎ B. The experiment should include the “post-Facebook generation”.‎ ‎ C. Students should donate some money to the experiment.‎ ‎ D. The experiment can make the students more conscious and considered.‎ ‎59. What’s the passage mainly about?‎ ‎ A. The disadvantages of social media. ‎ B. Some people’s views on social media.‎ ‎ C. A university’s experiment on social media. ‎ D. Challenges to the “post-Facebook generation”.‎ ‎【答案】56. B 57. D 58. A 59. C ‎8‎ One evening at a busy Broadway crossroad, I noticed a sister struggling to keep her little kid under control while she talked on the pay phone. She wanted him to stay still next to her, but he wanted to run and play at the curb, close to rushing buses and taxis. One could sense the woman’s frustration, that she was pulled in too many directions: She was angry at the person on the telephone and shouting at the younger that she would “snap his leg” if he moved again. As I waited for the traffic light to change, the child began to complain and struggle to free himself from the woman’s grasp. She dropped the phone, seized the neck of his tiny T-shirt and gave him a back-hand blow across the face that I know made his little head spin.‎ ‎ The light changed, and passersby continued on their way. But I stood there, fixed to the pavement. I knew this extremely upset woman would carry through on her threat of violence to the child. Before, I had wanted to approach her and offer to watch the youngster while she dealt with the troubling situation on the phone. Now I wanted to comfort the little boy. I also wanted to speak to the sister to calm her and to caution her, as I wish someone had cautioned me when I was passing my pain on to my daughter and causing her emotional suffering. But I was chicken. I thought, she may think I’m out of line, or I may be her next target.‎ ‎ Often I’ve thought about that child and the many others abused by adults. I wonder how they will internalize (使……藏在心底) their pain, and if it will crush their spirits. Will this little boy grow up to be an abusive man? Will he be gloomy and withdrawn? Will he find it hard to communicate with women, with other men? Or will he survive and be sensitive, caring and determined not to continue the cycle?‎ ‎ There is too much cruelty in the world, too much cruelty between people. I tremble at the increasing verbal bitterness and violence among Black girls, and among young mothers trying to discipline their children. This behavior isn’t class- or age- related: I hear sharp words from Black women from all walks of life who are overworked and stressed out and have grown impatient. At times I, too, become impolite to others, or, like the sister on the phone, strike out at (抨击) those closest to me.‎ ‎ Often we’re tired because we’ve made the wrong choices. Young girls who still need mothering are loaded with children. We sisters easily get hurt and annoyed when we don’t compromise with our own sense of self. Our personal fulfillment requires knowing what is best for us, setting our boundaries and keeping them undamaged. We will always be asked to do more than we are comfortable doing. When we know our boundaries, we can decline comfortably. People — and we ourselves — will act in ways we don’t like. But they, like us, are still worthy of love.‎ ‎ Whatever irritates (激怒) us about a person should be examined. Is the person reflecting ‎ behavior in us that needs to be changed? Often, when I find people irritating, I find they mirror something about me that I need to correct.‎ ‎ What’s needed in our personal relationships is a return to gentleness and tolerance (容忍). We must allow one another our learning experiences. Just as violence results to violence, verbal violence — the hard words and sharp tones we use to release inner stress — adds to the distance between us. ‎ What we people of African root must do to become, and continue to be strong begins with love, sensitivity and our ability to work together. We Black women have these spiritual resources in abundance. Now we must encourage them to create a peaceful place — for ourselves, our children, our men. ‎ ‎60. The scene the author described in the passage probably happened ______.‎ ‎ A. in a phone booth B. at a bus stop C. near a taxi stand D. on the street ‎61. We can learn from the passage the mother of the little kid must be ______.‎ ‎ A. disappointed and hot-tempered B. cruel and talkative ‎ C. confused and quick-minded D. considerate and sensitive ‎62. By saying “She may think I am out of line”, the author meant the woman might say ______.‎ ‎ A. “You’re not standing in the queue.”‎ B. “You can watch and comfort my kid.”‎ ‎ C. “Walk away. It’s none of your business.” ‎ D. “You are walking in the wrong direction.”‎ ‎63. The wrong choices the author mentions in Paragraph 5 include ______. ‎ ‎ a. We sisters refuse to marry young ‎ b. We aren’t satisfied with ourselves ‎ c. We have our boundaries damaged ‎ d. We decline others’ requests for help ‎ A. a, b B. c, d C. a, d D. b, c ‎ ‎64. According to the author, when we find a person irritating, we should ______.‎ ‎ A. return to tenderness and tolerance B. reflect on our behavior that needs correcting C. avoid the hard words and sharp tones D. examine if anything is wrong with him ‎65. The tone of the last paragraph is ______.‎ A. critical B. pessimistic C. optimistic D. objective ‎ ‎【答案】60. D 61. A 62. C 63. D 64. B 65. C ‎ ‎9‎ ‎ What is the purpose of life? It is to become happy. Whatever country or society people live ‎ in, ‎ they all have the same deep desire: to become happy.‎ ‎ Yet, there are few ideals as difficult to grasp as that of happiness. In our daily life we constantly experience happiness and unhappiness, but we are still quite ignorant (无知的) as to what happiness really is.‎ ‎ A young friend of mine once spent a long time trying to work out what happiness was, particularly happiness for women. When she first thought about happiness, she saw it as a matter of becoming financially (经济上) secure or getting married. But looking at friends who were married, she realized that marriage didn’t necessarily guarantee (确保) happiness.‎ ‎ Gradually, she realized that the secret of happiness lay in building a strong inner self. She saw happiness for anyone --- man or woman – does not come simply from having a formal education, wealth or marriage. It begins with having the strength to face and overcome (克服) one’s own weaknesses. Only then does it become possible to lead a truly happy life and enjoy a successful life. ‎ ‎ She finally told me, “Now I can say that happiness doesn’t exist in the past or in the future. It only exists within our state of life right now, as we face the challenges of daily life.”‎ ‎ I agree entirely. You know whether you are feeling joy or struggling with suffering. These things are not known to other people. Even a man who has great wealth, social recognition and many awards may still be shadowed (遮盖) by indescribable suffering deep in his heart. On the other hand, an elderly woman who is poor, leading a simple life alone, may feel the sun of joy and happiness rising in her heart each day.‎ ‎ Happiness is not a life without problems, but rather the strength to overcome the problems that come our way. Difficulties are unavoidable, but how we experience and react to our problems depends on us. True happiness is to be found within, in the state of our hearts.‎ ‎ The challenges we face in life can be compared to a tall mountain, rising before a mountain climber. For someone who has not been trained properly, whose muscles are weak and loose, every inch of the climb will be filled with terror and pain. The exact same climb, however, will be an exciting journey for someone who is prepared, whose legs and arms have been strengthened by constant training. With each step forward and up, beautiful new views will come into sight. ‎ ‎61. The difficulty is that it did not take the human mind into account. The reality is that we cannot keep relationships with more than a limited number of people. No matter how hard the internet tries to put you in communication, its best efforts will be defeated by your mind.‎ The problem is twofold (双重的). First, there is a limit on the number of people we can hold in mind and have a meaningful relationship with. That number is about 150 and is set by the size of our brain. Second, the quality of your relationships depends on the amount of time you invest (投入) in them. We invest a lot in a small number of people and then distribute what’s left among as many others as we can. The problem is that if we invest little time in a person, our engagement with that person will decline (减弱) until eventually it dies into “someone I once knew”.‎ This is not, of course, to say that the internet doesn’t serve a socially valuable function. Of course it does. But the question is not that it allows you to increase the size of your social circle to include the rest of the world, but that you can keep your relationships with your existing friends going even though you have to move to the other side of the world.‎ In one sense, that’s a good thing. But it also has a disadvantage. If you continue to invest in your old friends even though you can no longer see them, then certainly you aren’t using your time to make new friends where you now live. And I suspect that probably isn’t the best use of your time. Meaningful relationships are about being able to communicate with each other, face to face. The internet will slow down the rate with which relationships end, but it won’t stop that happening eventually.‎ ‎63. What is stressed in the first paragraph?‎ A. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.‎ ‎“Have a nice day. Next!”This version of expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same tone (腔调) with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase the business.‎ The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression serves us when we don’t know what to say. “Oh, you just had a tooth out? I’m terribly sorry, but have a nice day.”‎ The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day” to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you.‎ Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it’s nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don’t care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.‎ ‎66. How does the author understand Maxie’s words? ‎ A. Maxie shows her anxiety to the author. ‎ B. Maxie really wishes the author a good day. ‎ C. Maxie encourages the author to stay happy. ‎ D. Maxie really worries about the author’s security. ‎ ‎67. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean? ‎ A. The salesgirl is polite. B. The salesgirl is bored. ‎ C. The salesgirl cares about me. D. The salesgirl says the words as a routine (常规). ‎ ‎68. By saying “Have a nice day,” a stranger may ______.‎ A. try to be polite to you ‎ B. express respect to you ‎ C. give his blessing to you ‎ D. share his pleasure with you ‎ ‎69. What is the best title of the passage? ‎ A. Have a Nice Day—a Social Custom (习俗) ‎ B. Have a Nice Day—a Pleasant Gesture ‎ C. Have a Nice Day—a Heart-warming Greeting ‎ D. Have a Nice Day—a Polite Ending of a Conversation ‎ ‎ 【答案】 66. She is in bed waiting for her good night kiss. He tucks her in and bids her goodnight.‎ Just as he is to leave, she tells him. “Mother told me she adopted me when I was a baby.”‎ He stands at her bedroom door. Words fail him. Yes, he knew she was adopted (收养).‎ ‎“I am really lucky for being loved by my parents, even if I am not really theirs.”‎ ‎“You trying to bring on the water works?” he tells her.‎ She giggles, “Goodnight, Father. I love you.”‎ ‎“Love you, too.”‎ His face lights up as he wipes his dampened eyes.‎ The door closes and the child falls asleep dreaming of her mother.‎ Sitting outside he picks up the diary and opens it and reads the first line: “I love you, my dearest, if only things could have been different…”‎ ‎70.
