B Teenagers have long been told that being active and taking part in sports is good for their health. But new research suggests that too much sport for teenagers could negatively affect their well-being just as much as too little sport. The US Department of Health and Human Services suggests that young people aged between 6 and 17 carry out at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, 7 hours a week. But researchers from Switzerland say their study suggests that 14 hours of physical activity a week is best for promoting good health in teenagers. However, they found that more than 14 hours appears to be detrimental to their health. To reach their findings, the researchers surveyed more than 1,245 teenagers aged between 16 and 20 from Switzerland. All participants were required to answer questions regarding height and weight, sports practice, sports injuries and well-being. Their well-being was assessed using the World Health Organization (WHO) Well-Being Index, which provides scores between 0 and 25. Of the participants, 50.4% were male with a mean age of 17.95 years. Almost 9% of these males were overweight. The overall well-being score for all participants was 17. The researchers divided sports participation into low (0-3.5 hours a week), average (3.6-10.5 hours), high (10.6-17.5 hours), and very high (more than 17.5 hours). The researchers found that participants in the low and very high activity groups were more than twice as likely to have well-being scores below 13, compared with participants who carried out around 14 hours of physical activity a week, but beyond 14 hours resulted in lower well-being scores. Commenting on their findings, the researchers say physical activity has been associated with positive emotional well-being, reduced sadness, anxiety and stress disorders, and improved self-esteem(自尊)in teenagers. The researchers note that their study stresses the importance for physicians caring for teenagers to check their level of sports practice and ask them about well-being. Teenagers probably need a supportive and closer follow-up of their health and well-being. The findings can inform guideline groups who produce recommendations on sports practice for teenagers. 25.From the first paragraph we can conclude that _________. A. teenagers negatively do sports B. everything coin has two sides C. active sports does good to health D. lack of exercise influences health 26. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Positive. B. Essential. C. Beneficial. D. Harmful. 27. What did the researchers find out? A. Overdoing sport exercise is unhealthy for teenagers. B. Taking part in sport less is the cause of overweight. C. Very high activity groups tend to get higher well-being scores. D. Self-esteem is improved by unlimited sport activity. 28. How do physicians assess teenagers’ health from the study? A. The way to promote teenagers’ physical health. B. The importance of checking their level of workout. C. The method of improving their emotional well-being. D. The necessity of giving suggestions on their workout. C Every year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii, Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for---its stadium and theaters, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii’s people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2,000 years. Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22,000 people. It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, a grass-covered volcano. Mount Vesuvius had not erupted for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not. In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later, Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead. For centuries, Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861, an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20,000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all there everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people of Pompeii who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue color in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too; metal bread pans were in every bakery. In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread---a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup. Geinseppe has died, but his work continues. One-fourth has not been uncovered yet. Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw tourists to Pompeii. 29. Why do large number of people come to Pompeii each year? A. To visit the volcano B. To shop and eat there C. To watch sports and plays D. To see how Pompeiians lived 30. Why had so many Pompeiians remained by volcanic Mount Vesuvius? A. The city nearby offered all kinds of fun. B. The area produced the finest wine in Italy. C. Few people expected the volcano to erupt again. D. The mountain was beautiful and covered with grass. 31. Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in AD 79? A. Because Ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully. B. Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched. C. Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects. D. Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted. 32. What do we know about the Pompeiians who live 3,000 years ago? A. They lived more or less the same as Italians now do. B. They liked women wearing all kinds of makeup. C. They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating. D. They went back to Pompeii after the eruption in AD 79. D When I began my career as a jazz singer, I was told to start by covering the standards. But I didn’t follow the path most new jazz artists take and produced original albums instead. I believe when you have something to say, you can’t really keep it down. Two of those original albums, Liquid Spirit and Take Me to The Alley, earned me a loyal fan base and two Grammys for best jazz album in 2014 and 2017 respectively. My idol is Nat King Cole, whose music has an important place in our household. I could smell the greens on the stove and the cornbread in the oven when I hear Nat’s music. I wanted to have his music come through my body and sing it as an expression of appreciation for him. My mother had always been a fan of his music. This is something I did one day: Imagine her coming home from some protest movement or march and putting on, “Smile though your heart is aching, smile even though it’s breaking.” Imagine her putting on, “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again.” I see the optimism and the strength in his music. Writing from a personal experience can bring about my feelings and power of feelings that can be instantly connected to the instrument and my voice. When I sing Mother’s Song, Insanity, even Holding On, I am expressing things I have a connection to. The song Holding On is a soul song. It connects to Nat King Cole with its optimism, the optimism about the power and the strength of love. I like the fact that I can have 17 to 25-year-olds all over the world jumping and dancing to this song. They’re still getting the message. 33. How did the writer start his career as a musician? A. By copying his idol. B. By singing for awards. C. By covering the standards. D. By creating original music. 34. What’s paragraph three mainly about? A. The writer’s childhood experience. B. Nat King Cole’s contribution to jazz. C. The writer’s mother in the protest movement. D. Nat King Cole’s influence on the writer and his family. 35. What does the writer express in his songs? A. His personal emotions. B. His strong love for jazz. C. His attitude toward social injustice. D. His memories of the good old days. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Reading books is one of the best hobbies.
