We talk to our friends about things which we can’t talk to our families about, and friends offer support when we need it and provide companionship. It can be very easy to forget to communicate with your friends once you get married, have kids or have a job. Sometimes it’s hard enough to find time for your family and yourself, let alone your friends. A friend is someone who was once a stranger, and after you made a special connection, you became friends with each other. How amazing it is! It doesn’t happen every day or with everyone you come across. So the fact that you were able to build a friendship with someone who was once a stranger to you is a great and wonderful thing. This is why it’s important to find time for your friends. Finding time for friends can be as simple as calling them on the phone for a chat every now and then. This lets them know that they are in your thoughts and that they are important to you. Little gestures such as sending your friends some greeting cards, remembering their birthdays, and lending them a helping hand are also ways you can find time for your friends. Whether you go to the movies, meet for dinner, go dancing, or have a party, spending time together is a great way to relax and reconnect you with each other. Keep in mind that friends are a special and important part of our lives. So spend some time a day to include them in the balance of your life! 51. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE if you have many friends? A. You can share your feelings with them. B. You can get married more easily. C. You can not find a job like before. D. You will have kids soon. 52. According to the passage, all of the following are ways to get in touch with your friends EXCEPT ______. A. calling them on the phone B. sending them greeting cards C. having dinner with their kids D. lending them a helping hand 53. Which of the following is NOT a choice that you reconnect with your friends? A. Go to movies. B. Meet for dinner. C. Go dancing. D. Remember their birthdays. B Pumpkins are not only the most important symbol of Halloween; they are the star vegetable when it comes to the fall season in terms of decoration(装饰) and cooking uses. Often, we overlook how many different ways it can be used. The pumpkin has a long list of nutrients, including vitamins A, C, E, fiber, potassium, manganese, copper and so on. It is also low in salt, cholesterol and saturated(饱和的) fats. In its raw state, the pumpkin is a great source of nutrition. When buying your pumpkins, always get them from your local farmers to support their business and the environment, plus you will be guaranteed(保证) that they are freshly grown. If you are feeling interested, you can grow your own pumpkins! When carving your jacko'lanterns, don't throw away the seeds! They make a tasty baked treat that is healthy for you. When your jacko'lantern has lived its last day out in the doorway, refuse the usual practice of throwing it away at once. Instead, create a compost heap(堆肥堆) and let__nature__do__all__the__work. Be sure to remove the candle and all of the wax inside, and cut the pumpkin into pieces. Those leftover nutrients will help your soil. Make a pie—a great way to bring family and friends together. If you are feeling even more adventurous, try cooking something new with the pumpkins and see what wonderful delicious dishes you can produce in your very own kitchen. And don't think of the pumpkin just around holidays—it's great all year round. Don't let any part of the pumpkin go to waste this year. Turn them from orange to green this Halloween! 54. What's the best title for the passage? A. Can pumpkins be part of a healthy diet? B. Taste pumpkins to enjoy your holidays! C. Don't waste your pumpkins! D. Traditional Halloween foods and customs. 55. The writer suggests you buy pumpkins locally because ________. A. someone else will help you do the work B. the jacko'lantern will rot away by itself C. it needs special skills to make a jacko'lantern D. the pumpkin gets all its nutrients directly from nature 57. What can we conclude from the last paragraph? A.Tasty foods are a must for holding a family party. B. Pumpkins are a good tool for practicing your cooking skills. C. Pumpkins can be used for decoration at any time of the year. D. Foods made from pumpkins are popular at all times. C Are you having difficulty falling asleep? Try drinking a glass of warm milk. If that doesn't work, listen to soft beautiful music. Still no luck? Try thinking about sheep jumping over a fence. If you are still awake, take a sleeping pill. But people who take pills often become dependent on the drugs. So you lie awake knowing that the new workday will soon arrive. If you have been in such condition for at least one month, you may have primary insomnia(失眠症). A new study has found that you might fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep longer if you try “cerebral hypothermia”. It is not a complex medical process. It just means cooling down your brain. Eric Nofzinger and Daniel Buysse from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School led the study. They examined twelve people who had sleeping problems. Twelve others had no sleeping problems. Each of them wore a soft plastic cap on their head at bedtime. The caps had tubes inside filled with water. The researchers moved the water through the tubes and then changed the temperature of the water. Other studies showed that people who had sleeping problems often had more chemical reactions in the front of their brains. The researchers thought cooling down the brain might help. On the first two nights of testing, the patients wore caps with no water. On the next two nights, the caps were worn, but the water was not cooled. Then the researchers cooled the water a little for another two nights. On the final two nights of the study, the temperature of the water was made much cooler. The researchers found that the water caps didn't help the patients until the temperature was about 14℃. Most of the patients fell asleep faster and slept better when the coolest water was moving around their heads. Dr. Nofzinger and Dr. Buysse noted that this was only the beginning of the brain temperature study. But they believed they had discovered something important that needed more research. 58. The first paragraph is written to ________. A. explain how serious insomnia is B. tell us the causes of sleeping problems C. bring forward the topic of the passage D. tell us the danger of having sleeping problems 59. From the passage we know that “cerebral hypothermia” is actually ________. A. a complex medical process B. a simple physical treatment C. a psychological treatment D. a difficult scientific theory 60. In the study, researchers helped people fall asleep faster through ________. A. increasing chemical reactions in the front of their brains B. making them feel safe with a cap on their heads C. asking them to drink water to cool down D. lowering the temperature of their brains 61. Dr. Nofzinger and Dr. Buysse seemed to believe that ________. A. more studies would be needed for their research B. their research wouldn't help people greatly C. cooling down people's brains might be harmful D. the results of their study would be made use of soon D A new plan for getting children to and from school is being started by a local government in Eastern England. This could end many parents’ worries fearful for their children’s safety on the roads. Until now the local government have only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will attend their nearest school. The new plan is to be fired out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington School. The children live just within the three-mile limit and the local government said in the past that they would not undertake to provide free transport to the school . But now they have agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impington and back, a plan which has the support of the school’s headmaster. Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part . Final calculations have still to be carried out, but a government official has said the cost to parents should be less than £20 a term. They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington . The same bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in had asked if transport could be provided for their children , to see if they would like to take part in the new plan. 62.What is the aim of the plan? A..To prevent the students’ road accidents B. To relieve the traffic pressure C. To save time for the parents and students D. To help the parents save money 63. How can the local government arrange the new bus service at a low cost? A. By letting the bus run in the morning only. B. By limiting the number of the students C. By getting the support from the headmaster D. By linking the new bus service with the existing one 64. Which of the following is possible if the plan is carried out? A.The bus company will make much more money B.The children can choose whatever school they like C.The parents can get rid of their worries D.The students in Impington School can have free bus rides 65.
