Test yourself. This will help you to understand as well as learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening. It will also help you to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding. Take Fuller Notes Notes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words. Study the Middle The best time to review is soon after you’ve learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of the lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review. Sleep On It Study before going to bed, unless you are very tired. It's easier to remember material you have just learned after sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after you’ve fallen asleep. Combine(结合) Memory and Understanding There are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables, telephone numbers, and math formulas are better learned by rote(死记硬背). Ideas are best learned by understanding. The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a completely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got confused and try again. 21. You can notice your mistakes by ______. A. speaking things out aloud B. studying the middle C. taking notes D. sleeping on it 22. When taking notes, you should ______ to better help you with reading. A. underline important notes C. write notes in your own words B. write as quickly as possible D. take down every detail 23. Which of the following is NOT helpful for your understanding? A. Thinking about an idea in different ways. B. Going back to what first made you confused and start again. C. Relating ideas and concepts with what you already know. D. Reading from the beginning to the end without stop. B Close your eyes for a minute and imagine what life would be like if you couldn’t see. Imagine having to read this page, not with your eyes but with your fingers. How do you feel, then? With medical knowledge and skills today, two-thirds of the world's 42 million blind people should not have to suffer. Unluckily, rich countries have this knowledge, but developing countries do not. They continue to treat thousands of blind people every year. They have traveled around the earth 3 times, visited 76 countries and treated over 20, 000 blind people. They need your help to continue their work and free people from blindness. For just $ 38, you can help one person see; for $ 380, 10 people can see; $ 1, 300 helps train a doctor new skills; and for $ 13, 000 you can provide a training program for a group of doctors who can make thousands of blind people see again. Not only did I have the opportunity to live in France, but 1 was able to see some other countries with my girlfriend. Now she is studying in Essen, a large city in Western Germany. I recently went to stay with her----it was my first visit to Germany! Essen is a very large city. It has all the conveniences of any large city so I felt immediately at home. I love the variety of shops, restaurants, shopping malls, cocktail bars, nightclubs, parks and even a lake. There is also a city-wide network of trams(有轨电车), which makes getting around a piece of cake!... We took a boat tour on the river and went up the Rhine tower, a really tall building which offers great views across the city. Cologne, as you might know, is world famous for its perfumes. The cathedral(大教堂)there is an unmissable landmark. We made the effort to climb to the top of one of the cathedrals tower, The spiral(螺旋的)stairs seemed endless. but it was worthwhile for the impressive sights from the top. We also went in a cable car over the river and tasted a German delicacy called "Spaghettieis” which is ice cream with strawberry sauce! I also got to try the famous German sausage.
