The best way to see the Dalmatian Coast is from your own sea kayak(皮划艇). But the temperature is far too high to be comfortable in the high season, so you need to wait until it drops but the sea is still warm. Mykonos, Greece Mykonos is usually very crowded with visitors in July and August, but the Greek meltemi winds can be a real problem in high summer. Later in the season, they are much calmer and you can spend your time lying on the beach without being angry with the sand. The best address is the Hotel Belvedere, but the cheapest hotel is the Grace Mykonos, which is good value in September, but even better a month later. Aeolian Island, Italy Sicily’s beautiful seven islands often attract Oscar-winners like Robert De Niro and Russell Crowe. September is the time to visit the Aeolian Islands, as the tourists have gone. Don’t miss Panarea, where the only way of getting around is on foot, and make sure you include the greenest island, Salina. St Tropez, France St Tropez in high season is full, but come the end August, it soon returns to being the French Provencal fishing town of the 1960s. You can walk through its streets in peace and drop into its popular stores without the crowds. It’s also much easier to get a meal at places such as Alain Ducasse’s Spoon, or to drop into bars like Nikki Beach for a drink. The best places to stay are Hotel La Ponche or Le Beauvallon, a 10-minute boat ride across the bay in St Maxime. 21. Where can you go if you are interested in historic buildings? A.Mykonos, Greece. B. St Tropez, France C. Aeolian Islands, Italy D. Dalmatian Coast, Croatia 22. When is the best time to stay in the Grace Mykonos? A.In July. B. In August. C. In October. D. In September. 23. Why does the author say September is the time to visit the Aeolian Islands? A. There are fewer tourists. B. The weather is quite good. C. There’s a chance to meet stars D. Green can be seen everywhere. B Each year, people are becoming more and more worried about the future of our planet. People are now starting to agree--- global warming will certainly make a difference to the world’s weather. While some parts of the world may have more floods, some other parts might have long periods of dry weather. All of this will have a serious influence on the world’s agriculture. And that could make it difficult for us to get enough food to survive. This explains the idea behind the Svalbard Global Seed Vault(种子库). The Seed Vault is built into a mountain on an island near the North Pole. The purpose is to protect the world’s agriculture from future disasters. This may not just be a question of global warming. Perhaps there will be a major nuclear disaster or war one day. These things won’t be a problem for Svalbard. Some experts think that the population of the earth will probably go up by 50% in the next 40 years. Because of climate change, it probably won’ t be easy for some plants to survive. Having many different types of plants will be necessary for agriculture to adapt to changes in the environment. In the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, there is space for 4.5 million types of seed. At the moment there are over 770,000 different types there. Any country in the world can leave seeds in Svalbard without paying. The seeds of some plants, such as peas, only survive for 20 to 30 years. But others will last for hundreds of years. In 2028, the Svalbard Vault will celebrate its 20th birthday. 200 years in the future, it’s possible that the ice caps will disappear. Even if this happens, Svalbard will be safe. That’s because it is on a mountain and will be above the sea level. And because it is so close to the North Pole, even if their electricity stops working, the ice will keep a cool temperature of -3.5℃ to keep the seeds in good condition. But the best protection is the fact that it is in such a faraway place. After all, maybe one day this will be the most important building in the whole world. 24. What does the first paragraph mainly introduce? A. The role of agriculture. B. The reason for global warming. C. The future problems we’ll face. D. The planet where we’ll live in the future. 25. What is the Seed Vault mainly used for? A. Storing plant seeds B. Growing more plants C. Discovering new plants D. Providing humans with food 26. What do we know about the Seed Vault? A. It needs more space. B. It provides services for free. C. It is built above a mountain. D. It will close in 200 years. 27. If there is an electrical problem at the Seed Vault, what will happen to the seeds? A. They will still be safe. B. They will be sent away. C. They will be of no use. D. They will be planted at once C When I learned that my 71-year-old mother was playing Scrabble – a word game – against herself, I knew I had to do something. My husband suggested we give her a computer to play against. I wasn’t sure my mother was ready for it. After all, it had taken 10 years to persuade her to buy an electric cooker. Even so, we packed up our old computer and delivered it to my parents’ home. And so began my mother’s adventure in the world of computers. It also marked the beginning of an unusual teaching task for me. I’ve taught people of all ages, but I never thought I would be teaching my mother how to do anything. She has been the one teaching me all my life: to cool and sew; to enjoy the good times and put up with the bad. Now it was my turn to give something back. It wasn’t easy at the beginning. There was so much to explain and to introduce. Slowly but surely, my mother caught on, making notes in a little notebook. After a few months of Scrabble and other games, I decided it was time to introduce her to word processing(文字处理). This proved to be a bigger challenge to her, so I gave her some homework. I asked her to write me a letter, using different letter types, colors and spaces. “Are you this demanding with your kindergarten pupils?” she asked. “No, of course not,” I said. “They already know how to use a computer.” My mother isn’t the only one experiencing a fast personal growth period. Thanks to the computer, my father has finally got over his phone allergy(过敏反应). For as long as I can remember, any time I called, my mother would answer. Dad and I have had more phone conversations in the last two months than we’ve had in the past 20 years. 28. What does the author do? A. She is a cook. B. She is a teacher. C. She is a housewife. D. She is a computer engineer. 29. The author decided to give her mother a computer . A. to let her have more chances to write letters B. to support her in doing her homework C. to help her through the bad times D. to make her life more enjoyable 30. The author asked her mother to write her a letter . A. because her mother had stopped using the telephone B. because she wanted to keep in touch with her mother C. so that her mother could practice what she had learned D. so that mother could be free from housework 31. After the computer was brought home, the author’s father . A. lost interest in cooking B. took more phone calls C. played more games D. began to use it D Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe for success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog. However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals are just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission(投降). In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk 'Dog', and dogs can learn how to talk ‘Cat’. What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn to read each other’s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was previously suspected. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other. The significance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets—to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance. 32. The underlined word swimmingly in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to . A. early B. sweetly C. quickly D. smoothly 33.
