Becca got to swim with dolphins at Discovery Cove and see some of her favorite animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The family also visited Clearwater Aquarium, where Becca saw some of the dolphins that appeared in one of her favorite movies, Dolphin Tale. You might recognize his name from the series of Wayside School books or Marvin Redpost books. You might also know him as the author of the Newbery Award-winning book Holes. As successful as Louis Sachar is at writing funny, touching books, he didn’t always know he wanted to be a writer. He remembers enjoying writing in school. In college he studied the Russian language. He spent some time as a teacher’s helper when he was in college and found he really enjoyed working with young people. Even after his experiences teaching and working with children, Sachar still hadn’t decided what career he wanted to have. After college he attended law school and got a law degree several years later. About ten years later, after writing several books, Sachar finally felt that his books were successful enough for him to write full time. Sachar spends two hours writing each morning when he feels most fresh. He likes to be alone when he writes, except for the company (陪伴) of his two dogs. He tries to remember what it was like to be a child and to use these feelings in his books. He also uses his teaching experiences, as well as his daughter’s life. Sachar doesn’t sit down with an organized plan when he starts a new book. Instead he starts with just a seed (萌芽) of an idea, maybe a character trait (个性特征) or a funny event. He starts writing and finds that writing produces more ideas. Sachar doesn’t worry about perfecting his story the first time around. In fact, he may write his story five or six times before he sends it to the publisher. 28 . What do we know about Sachar’s writing career? A . He studied writing in college. B . He wrote about young people in school. C . He didn’t decide to be a full-time writer at first. D. His lawyer experiences. 30.Which of the following describes Sachar’s writing habit? A . He writes with his daughter around. B . He starts with an unclear plan. C . He feels most fresh at night. D . He writes all day long. 31 . What might Sachar do after he finishes a book for the first time? A . He keeps on improving it. B . He starts writing another one. C . He asks friends to check it for mistakes. D . He sends it to the publisher for perfection. D We interviewed two people , one who went from the country to the city and one who did the opposite. Janet Lincoln is a salesgirl who moved to St. Louis five years ago. Here’s what Janet told us: “Five years ago I used to live in a small town called Lemon Falls. I grew up and went to high school there. After I graduated I worked in a supermarket. Lemon Falls had a population of about 800 people, and I knew every single one of them. They all knew everything about me, too. You couldn’t do anything without everyone in town knowing about it. The first chance I got I moved to St. Louis and I love it. I don’t know as many people now as I used to, but that’s OK. I have a few good friends, and I see them when I want to. I kind of like being anonymous. I’d never go back to Lemon Falls.” Troy Henson had the opposite experience. He and his wife, Darla, and their two children moved from St. Louis to Bloomfield three years ago. Here’s what Troy told us: “The best thing we ever did was get out of St. Louis. Don’t get me wrong; St. Louis is as good a place as any other city, I suppose --- if you like cities, that is. We don’t. Both Darla and I grew up in St. Louis. We met at college and got married. Then the kids came along and life got difficult. We didn’t know any of our neighbors. We both had good jobs, but it always seemed like there was never enough money. That all changed when we moved to Bloomfield. I don’t make as much money as I used to, but then we don’t have as many expenses as we did. We know our neighbors. Life is good. We’d never leave Bloomfield .” 32 . What troubled Janet when she was in Lemon Falls? A . She had no friend. B . There was no privacy. C . There was a lot of competition. D . She couldn’t find a well-paid job. 33 . B . moved to a bigger city. C . grew up in a smaller town. D . knows little about his new neighbors. 35. What is Troy’s opinion on living in Bloom-field? A . It is a little boring. B . It is quite comfortable. C . It costs a lot of money . D . It creates a safe environment. E Whether you’re studying for a test, reviewing paperwork for your job, or trying to understand a journal article, reading comprehension (理解) is involved in. Unfortunately, when the reading material is difficult, our reading comprehension can suffer. Learning to comprehend what you read can help you prevent wasting time as well as make you more productive (富有成效的) on the job or at school. The things you already know are important for understanding things you’re going to learn. Before you begin reading something on a new topic, think about what you already know about it and how what you are reading might build upon that. Since kindergarten, we’ve all been told to keep a dictionary nearby when reading, but few of us follow this advice. If your are not absolutely certain of the meaning of a word, look it up. You’ll not only make reading easier, you’ll also improve your vocabulary. If you are reading especially challenging material, try taking notes. If you write while you are reading, reading will become boring and your comprehension will go downhill. Instead, make an outline at the end of each paragraph or sentence. While speed reading is very popular in some circles, and certainly has its place, it is generally a terrible idea if you want to learn. Besides, speed reading will cost you more time because you will have to go back and review if you understand what you have read quickly. Focus on quality reading rather than quick reading, and take frequent breaks if you begin to get distracted (注意力分散的). When reading something boring, it’s easy to just read the words without even understanding what they mean. At such times, just find a way to relate to the material. Write down questions, and look up concepts online to get alternative perspectives ( 不同观点 ). Your comprehension will improve and you’ll be less likely to need to reread. 36.The passage is intended to teach students how to . A . form good study habits. B. take notes when reading books. C .improve reading comprehension. D. treat their reading homework properly. 37 . The author suggests that when reading books we should . A. refuse to use a dictionary. B. think about what we know. C .pay more attention to new topics. D. practise speed reading first. 38. What should we do if we come across some boring material ? A. Ignore new words. B . Make every effort to understand it. C . Read it without understanding. D . Ask for help from others. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 International students’ magazine Would you like to talk to people of your age in another country?
