At first we think about human relationship. In the year 2050, we will use computers almost every day. We will make new friends through the Internet — even our husbands or wives will be met in this way. It will be much faster and easier for us. On the other hand, our relationships with people won’t be as important as they are today — we will feel a little lonely. Computers will also help us in many other activities in 2050. For example, they will be used by the children at school to make their learning easier. In addition, there will be much more other machines which will play a similar role as computers, like robots which will do the housework for us. Spending holidays will also be completely different. Traveling to other planets or to the moon will be available for everyone. Means of transport will, of course, change, too. We will use solar-powered cars, which will be much cleaner. We could expect that the faster technological progress would lead to a more polluted environment. But it isn’t true. We will pay more attention to protecting the environment. And, scientists will probably find cures for many dangerous diseases, like cancer or AIDS. Therefore, our surroundings as well as health will be in better condition. Although we can’t predict the exact changes which will be made in the world, we often think about them. We worry about our and our children’s future; we have expectations, hopes as well as fears. But I think we should be rather hopeful about our future. We should be happy and believe good things will happen. 21. Why will people probably feel a little lonely in 2050? A. Because the number of people will become much smaller. B. Because there will be less face-to-face communication. C. Because people won’t like making friends with each other. D. Because people won’t communicate with each other much often. 22. The third paragraph mainly tells us . A. computers will do all the things for human beings B. how people will use computers to communicate with each other C. machines like computers and robots will help people a lot D. how people will use robots to do the housework 23. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. How people will communicate in the year 2050. B. What our life will be like in the year 2050. C. How people will travel and spend their holidays in the year 2050. D. What high technology will appear in the year 2050. B One of the best-known American writers of children’s books is Alfred Strong, or Doctor Strong, as he is better known to readers everywhere. Now, an art show called “Doctor Strong From Then to Now” is travelling around the United States. The pictures and drawings show the history of Doctor Strong. Doctor Strong first became famous almost fifty years ago when his first children’s book was published. Since then, he has written forty-five books that have sold more than one hundred million copies around the world. Doctor Strong’s books are known for their easy use of words and colorful, hand-drawn pictures. These drawings bring life to his imaginary creatures. The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and hundreds of others. The San Diego Museum, in California, organized the art show. It included about three hundred Doctor Strong’s original(最早的) drawings and some of his writings. Most of Doctor Strong’s books, although written in a funny way, have serious messages. For example, in Mc Elligot’s Pool, he describes the danger of pollution. He discusses the arms race in The Butter Battle Book, written in nineteen eighty-four. Doctor Strong is almost eighty-four years old now. He says he never planned to write stories just for children. He says he writes stories that interest people of all ages. He says he uses easy words so that everyone, even a child, can understand. 24. Alfred Strong is a famous_______ in the United States. A. doctor B. artist C. writer D. reader 25. His purpose in writing many such books is_______. A. to show his original pictures and drawings B. to organize a special art show of his own C. to make his readers laugh or smile when they read his books D. not only to interest people but to expose (uncover) some serious social problems C Dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas of restaurants in New York, US. In the past, health and safety laws made it illegal to bring dogs to any restaurant in New York. But last May state lawmakers voted to let people bring dogs to restaurants that have tables outdoors. Not one lawmaker voted no. The law was soon passed. Several special rules are included in this law. The dogs must be kept on a leash(皮带). Dogs must not share water bowls. Also, restaurants can choose to let people bring dogs or not. New York joins California, Florida and Maryland in the list of states with similar laws. In many European countries, bringing dogs to restaurants is common. Paris in France has allowed dogs to go with their owners in restaurants for a long time. Governor Andrew Cuomo believes that this new law will help businesses grow. But not all New Yorkers are happy about this new law. Christopher Miller is the spokesman for the New York City Department of Health. He told the New York Daily News that letting dogs in restaurants could cause problems. “The Health Department loves all dogs, but just not at restaurants where they can create a risk to the health and safety of diners, restaurant workers and other dogs,” Miller said. New York City is often the center of the new ideas in the US. A law asking some restaurants in the city to show the amount of calories (卡路里) in the food they served was passed in 2009. The city leader tried unsuccessfully to stop the sale of large amounts of soft drinks in 2012. Smoking was made illegal in restaurants in 1993. 28. What can we know about the new law from Paragraph 1? A. Who made it. B. Why it was made. C. Why there are special rules. D. What the special rules are. 29. What did Christopher Miller think of the new law? A. It could help businesses grow. B. It could be bad for the environment. C. It could bring health and safety problems. D. It could make people pay more attention to dogs. 30. Which of the following is illegal in restaurants in New York City now? A. Smoking. B. Bringing dogs. C. Offering high-calorie food. D. Selling soft drinks in big cups. 31. Why does the writer write this passage? A. To do a survey. B. To introduce a law. C. To share his opinions. D. To ask others to obey the law. D Imagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there. Sounds unusual, doesn’t it? But it’s not that unrealistic, with the development of China’s high-speed railway system. And that’s not all. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe. China is negotiating (协商) to extend its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore. China has proposed three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore via (通过)Vietnam and Malaysia. Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe. The new system would still follow China’s high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes. Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge(轨距), maintenance of railway tracks. But the key issue is really money. China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on domestic(国内的) railway expansion. China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather than with capital investment. Resources from those countries could stream into China to keep up development. It’ll be a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on, not to mention the better communication among those countries. For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some much-needed resources, but would also help develop China’s far west. We can predict that in the coming decades, millions of people will move to the western regions, where the land is empty and resources unused. With high-speed trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west once and for all. And they’ll trade with Central Asian and Eastern European countries. 32. According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new high-speed railway plan is . A. technical issues B. safety of the system C. financial problems D. maintenance(维护) of railway tracks 33. China’s new high-speed railway plan will be a win-win project because . A. China will get much-needed resources and develop its western regions B. China and the countries involved will benefit from the project in various ways C. China will develop its railway system and communication with other countries D. the foreign countries involved will develop their railway transportation, business and tourism 34. Which of the following words best describes the author’s attitude towards China’s high-speed railway plan? A. Critical. B. Reserved. C. Doubtful. D. Positive. 35. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage? A. New Railway Standards B. Big Railway Dreams C. High-speed Bullet Trains D. M: Obviously because there’s a law against having dogs in the streets. W: Does that mean that dogs have to stay at home all the time? M: Sounds pretty cruel, right? Maybe a dog park is a good idea. They just leave the mess to the street cleaners. Maybe we need more volunteers. (Text 7) W: Could you please give me some advice about how to keep fit? They sometimes have totally different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special program in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly and peaceful environment. Each summer, 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and fun in work. Some teenagers work in the forests or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and to build little wood houses. The adults teach them these skills. There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the teenagers learn photography or drawing. Others just sit around and talk with the adults. Each teenager can choose his own way to spend his free time. When people live together, they should have rules. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. 查看更多
