What makes one person a genius(天才), like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.‎ We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.‎ Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”‎ ‎21. The words “intelligent” and “brilliant” in the first paragraph probably mean _______ while “dull” in the second paragraph means ________.‎ A. bright and splendid; slow in thinking and understanding B. pretty and handsome; ordinary-looking C. great and important; common D. hopeful and helpful; careless ‎ ‎22. According to the context we can guess that a genius is ______ while an idiot is ________.‎ A. a normal person; a funny person B. a strong person; a weak person C. a highly intelligent person; a foolish or weak-minded person D. a famous person; an ordinary person ‎ ‎23. A person ________ is more likely to become a genius.‎ A. whose parents are clever B. often thinking about difficult problems C. often helped by his parents and teachers D. born with a good brain and putting it into active use ‎ ‎24. It is better for parents ________.‎ A. to praise and encourage their children more often B. to be hard on their children C. to leave their children alone with nothing to do D. to give their children as much help as possible ‎ ‎25. Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?‎ A. Parents play an important part in their children’s growth.‎ B. The less you use your mind the duller you may become.‎ C. Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live.‎ D. What makes a person bright or stupid is still under discussion.‎ ‎ B Mr. Fitzpatrick has given much attention to his “Weight reduction” (减轻体重) programs. Just last year, for example, when he was the main speaker at the company dinner, he said he put on twenty pounds instead of losing thirty he promised he would.‎ The year before that, he joined a health club. He exercised every day and ate less food. At the end of three months, however, he began making excuses about why he couldn’t go there more often.‎ After the health club failed to work, he joined Weight Watchers but stopped going because he was the only man there. And he hated following any of the diet programs. Fitz’s latest idea is to join a walking club to “walk off” the weight.‎ ‎26. Mr. Fitzpatrick was ________ when spoke at the company dinner last year.‎ A. lighter than the year before B. planning to go on a diet C. heavier than the year before D. with the Weight Watchers ‎ ‎27. He did not stay with Weight Watchers because ________.‎ A. he couldn’t do as the diet programs required him B. he felt uncomfortable being watched by women C. the members of Weight Watchers were all women but him D. both A and C ‎ ‎28. Which of the following can best explain the main idea of the passage?‎ A. There is no good way to lose weight. B. One can do nothing without a strong will.‎ C. There are different ways to lose weight. D. Walking is the best way of losing weight.‎ C Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to go to play some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercises and brain development. Judy Camerson, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels(血管),including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercise to think better. As she says, “While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the brain.”‎ ‎ The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Even a little movement can show big ‎ results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary school or high school can result from a lack of movement as babies. “Babies need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to connect physical activity with higher learning.” says Margaret.‎ ‎ Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell University studied a group of seniors who have a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should not be too simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as with yoga or taichi helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time. For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main aim is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.‎ ‎29. What is the main idea of this passage?‎ ‎ A. How exercise makes people strong. B. How to get good scores in a test.‎ ‎ C. How exercise helps the brain develop. D. How the brain can change one’s memory.‎ ‎30. According to the passage, what is the connection between exercise and brain development?‎ ‎ A. Exercise helps soften our blood vessels. B. Physical exercise helps us think better.‎ ‎ C. The brain needs special mental exercise. D. The more exercise, the bigger the brain.‎ ‎31. For ordinary people, the smallest amount of exercise required to gain any benefit is ____.‎ A. two hours per week B. 40 hours per week C. three hours per week D. 40 hours per month ‎32. Why is yoga suggested for seniors?‎ ‎ A. It does good to the joints of old people. B. It does not increase the heart rate.‎ ‎ C. It includes learning new actions. D. It can be done in groups.‎ ‎ D If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important points to remember about rate, or speed, of reading:‎ ‎1. Knowing why you are reading—what you are reading to find out—will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly.‎ ‎2. Some things should be read slowly throughout(自始至终). Examples are directions for making or doing something, arithmetic (算术)problems, science and history books, which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important step and understand each important idea.‎ ‎3. Some things should be read rapidly throughout. Examples are simple stories meant for enjoyment, news, and letters from friends, items, or bits of news from local, or hometown, paper, telling what is happening to friends and neighbors.‎ ‎4. In some of your readings, you must change your speed from fast to slow to fast, as you go along. You need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do more careful readings when you come to important ideas which must be remembered.‎ ‎33. According to the passage, your reading speed depends on ________.‎ A. whether the reading material is easy or difficult B. what you are reading C. what your purpose in reading something is D. both B and C ‎ ‎34. If one wants to be relaxed by reading, one should take up ________.‎ A. a story book B. a book on science and technology C. news, letters from friends D. some material full of information ‎ ‎35. Which of the following can best express the main idea of the passage?‎ A. How to decide your reading speed. B. How to raise your reading speed.‎ C. How to improve your reading skills. D. How to choose your reading materials.‎ 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ It is never too late to add some new and better practices into your daily life. Here are some wise  lessons that I wish I had known when I was younger Don' t wait until tomorrow.Enjoy every moment of today, because you are not guaranteed a tomorrow.Don't put off your dreams. 36 Pay attention to what is happening now to the people around you, to the task at hand and to all of the choices you make today.‎ It' s called work for a reason. 37 When you hear about an overnight success story, don't forget about all of the work that came before. You may have to do work you do not enjoy before you get to success.Keep going.‎ ‎38   You never know when a former boss , colleague or business partner may come in handy.Try to part on good terms.Friends of all kinds will provide a wealthy resource of ideas and support, as you go forward in life.‎ It' s not a race. You have so much to do and it feels as though you have to be in a hurry to get there. 39  If you try to do it all at once you will, at best not have time to enjoy it and at worst bum out and damage your health and relationships.‎ Look for the good in everything.Stay positive.Look for the good in people.Celebrate the happy moments. 40 If you view the world around you and life' s challenges through goodness, then you will find life much more enjoyable.‎ A.But in fact, you do not have to do it all at once.‎ B.If it' s important to you, then do it today.‎ C.Slow down and enjoy what is happening today.‎ D.Give helpful encouragement rather than negative criticism.‎ E.Stay away from your former connections.‎ F.Success at anything takes work.‎ G.Don' t burn your bridges.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用 (共两节,满分45分) ‎ 第二节:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30 分)‎ ‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ ‎ The other day I was having lunch with some friends, I noticed a young man struggling to get his drink.
