A My Favourite Books Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series(系列)of lifestyle books. Here she picks her top reads. Matilda Roald Dahl I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl's writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words. Matilda's battles with her cruel parents and the bossy headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, are equally fumy and frightening, but they're also aspirational. After Dark Haruki Murakami It’s about two sisters — Eri, a model who either won’t or can’t stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister, Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse "night people" who are hiding secrets. Gone Girl Gillian Flynn There was a bit of me that didn't want to love this when everyone else on the planet did, but the horror story is brilliant. There's tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It's a real whodunit and the frustration when you realise what's going on is horribly enjoyable. The Stand Stephen King This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world's population, a battle unfolds between good and evil among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the scariest characters ever. 1. Who does "I" refer to in the text? A. Stephen King. B. Gillian Flynn. C. Jo Usmar. D. Roald Dahl. 2. Which of the following tells about Mari and Eri? A. Cosmopolitan. B. Matilda. C. After Dark. D. The Stand. 3. What kind of book is Gone Girl? A.A folk tale. B.A biography. C.A love story. D.A horror story. B Americans love pets. Many pet owners treat these friends as part of the family. Sometimes they spice up(增加情趣) their pets’ life with entertaining(有趣的) videos and amusing toys. If they have an eye for fashion, pet owners can dress their pets in fashionable clothes. For special occasions, they can use perfume(香水) to make their dogs smell well. Leading a dog’s life in America isn’t such a bad thing. Many grocery stores sell various pet foods to owners eager to please their pets. In Houston, Texas dogs can have their dinner delivered to their homes. Well-to-do dogs can attend doggy daycare center, which is usually expensive, while their owners work. Pets can even accompany their owners on vacation. Fancy hotels are beginning to accommodate both man and the beast. Beneath all these things, there lies a basic American belief: pets have a right to be treated well. At least 75 animal welfare organizations exist in America. They provide care and adoption service for homeless and abused (受虐待的) animals. Veterinarians (兽医) give animals an unbelievable care for an unbelievable price. People can even buy health insurance for their pets. And when it is time to say good-bye, owners can bury their pets in a respectable cemetery(墓地). The average American enjoys having pets around for a good reason. Researchers have discovered that interaction with animals lowers a person’s blood pressure. Dogs can offer protection from burglars and unwelcome visitors. Cats can help rid the home of unwanted pests (害虫). Pets even encourage social relationships: they give their owners an appearance of friendliness, and they provide a good topic of conversation. Pets are basic to American culture as hot dogs or apple pies. To Americans, pets are not just property, but part of the family. After all, pets are “people”, too. 4. The underlined phrase “have an eye for” (in Paragraph 1) probably means ________. A. look down upon B. look up to C. have a proper sense of D. keep a watch on 5. Pets in America can even get very good medical care mainly because ________. A. medical care for animals is free B. the price of medical care for pets is extremely low C. there are many animal welfare organizations in America D. Americans believe that pets have a right to be treated well 6. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Americans have many reasons to love pets. B. Pets are part of American families. C. Pets have a comfortable life in America. D. Americans have a childish love for pets. C Imagination and fantasy can play an important role in achieving the things we fear. Children know this very well. Fred Epstein, in his book If I Make It to Five, tells a story he heard from one of friends about Tom, a four-year-old boy with a cancer in his back bone. He came through several operations and a lot of pain by mastering his imagination. Tom loved to pretend, and he particularly loved to play superheroes. Dr. Epstein explained that it was actually a brilliant way for his young mind to handle the terrifying and painful life he led. The day before his third trip to the operating room, Tom was terribly afraid. “Maybe I could go as Superman,” he whispered to his mom. Hearing this, the mother hesitated for a while. She had avoided buying the expensive costume, finally she agreed. The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his hand to the people greeting him along the way. And Tom, with the strength of his fantasy, successfully made it through the operation. The power of imagination need not be reserved for children only. We all have the power to use our fantasies to attempt things we never thought possible, to go through those things that seem impossible, and to achieve what we never believed we could. Just as Dr. Epstein puts it, “If you can dream it, you can do it”. It doesn’t mean that you should dress as a superhero for your next job interview. But, next time you are tested in a way that seems impossible, imagine what it would take to overcome it. Become the person you need to become to win over your challenge and do it in your mind first. So, let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream. 7. What do we know about Tom? A. He was seriously ill B. He was a dishonest boy. C. He was crazy about magic D. He was Dr. Epstein’s patient 8. When Tom went for the third operation, he _________ . A. pretended to be painful B. acted like a superhero C. appeared in poor spirits D. argued with his mother 9. In the last paragraph, you are advised ________ . A.to become a powerful person in your mind B.to go through some difficult tests C.to wear expensive clothes for job interviews D.to wake up from your wild dreams 10. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To tell us an interesting story. B. To help us make right decisions. C. To advise us to care about children. D. To encourage us to use our imagination. D There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This arises from(源于) the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects(产生的影响)upon their minds. People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things. The pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend (得罪) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention(意图)of criticizing(批评的)and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation (仿效). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors(拥有者). The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit. Although in fact it is chiefly(主要)an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper(脾气)and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor(有利于)their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections(异议), no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings. Those should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise(否则), it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels(口角; 争吵). 11. People who are unhappy _________. A. always consider things differently from others B. usually are affected by the results of certain things C. usually misunderstand what others think or say D. always discover the unpleasant side of certain things 12. The underlined phrase “sour the pleasure of society” most nearly means “________”. A. have a good taste with social life B. make others unhappy C. tend to scold(责骂) others openly D. enjoy the pleasure of life 13. We can conclude from the passage that ________. A. we should pity all such unhappy people B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life C. people can get rid of (摆脱) the habit of unhappiness D. unhappy people can not understand happy persons 14. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should _________. A. prevent any communication with them B. show no respect and politeness to them C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes 15. In this passage, the writer mainly __________. A. describes two types of people B. laughs at the unhappy people C. suggests ways to help the unhappy people D. tells people to avoid contact with the unhappy 第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Getting your children to study can be a little like getting them to eat their vegetables. __16__.
