A Summer is almost here, and the weather is heating up. Are you drinking enough water? Many kids aren't, according to a new study.‎ The study's lead author, Erica Kenney, originally planned to look into the amount of sugary drinks kids were consuming at school. However, during her research, she found that many kids were simply not drinking enough water. Boys were 76% more likely than girls not to have enough water in their systems. Nearly one quarter of the kids in the survey reported drinking no plain water at all.‎ ‎“These findings are significant because they highlight a potential health issue that hasn't been given a lot of attention in the past,” said Kenney. “Even though for most of these kids this isn't an immediate health threat, this is an issue that could really be reducing the quality of life and wellbeing for many children and youth.”‎ How much is enough?‎ The human body is made up of 60% water. Not drinking enough water can lead to pathema,_such as headaches, poor physical performances, and even more serious issues. Your body needs more water when you are in hot climates, when you are physically active, and if you have a fever.‎ The United States National Agriculture Library says on average, kids need between 10~14 cups of water every day. This water can come from a mix of drinks and foods that contain high amounts of water. ‎ Tips for Staying Hydrated ‎◆Carry a water bottle for easy access.‎ ‎◆Choose water instead of other beverages when eating out. Generally, you will save money and reduce calories.‎ ‎◆Add a piece of lemon to your water. This may improve the taste, and you might drink more water than you usually do.‎ 篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了孩子们身体缺水的危害,并提供了保持身体足够水量的方法和建议。‎ ‎1.What did Erica Kenney want to study in the beginning?‎ A.What effect lacking water could have.‎ B.What made kids dislike drinking water.‎ C.How much sugary drinks kids had at school.‎ D.Whether kids had enjoyed healthy diet at school.‎ 答案:C 细节理解题。由第二段中的“originally planned to look into the amount ‎ of sugary drinks kids were consuming at school”可知,Erica Kenney最初是想调查孩子们在学校喝了多少含糖饮料。‎ ‎2.What can we infer from Kenney's words?‎ A.Kids' health wasn't cared before.‎ B.Lacking water can be harmful to kids.‎ C.Her findings can't be more important.‎ D.Health is connected with the life quality.‎ 答案:B 推理判断题。由第三段中的“this is an issue that could really be reducing the quality of life and wellbeing for many children and youth”可知,缺水会影响孩子们的健康。‎ ‎3.What does the underlined word “pathema” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?‎ A.Thirst. B.Disease.‎ C.Disadvantages. 由画线词后的“such as headaches, poor physical performances, and even more serious issues”可推测,pathema指“疾病”。‎ ‎4.What are kids advised not to drink?‎ A.Beverages. B.Plain water.‎ C.Water from fruit. D.Water from vegetables.‎ 答案:A 细节理解题。由Tips for Staying Hydrated中的“Choose water instead of other beverages when eating out.” ‎ ‎ ‎ consume vt. Even though for most of these kids this isn't an immediate health threat, this is an issue that could really be reducing the quality of life and wellbeing for many children and youth.‎ 译文:即使对大多数孩子来说,这并不是直接的健康威胁,但这个问题确实会降低许多儿童和青少年的生活质量和健康。 ‎ B Reading‎ is a skill that affects all parts of our daily life—from road signs to restaurant menus. And like most skills, it should be practiced every day. But it should also be fun, not a chore. Today some Shanghai teachers give us a means of getting ‎ better and having fun.‎ At Shanghai Community International School, students cozy (舒适) up with a good book with nursery teacher Jenna Lelievre. Every year, the SCIS Hongqiao ECE campus joins the celebration of International Literacy Day.‎ Every year, our SCIS Hongqiao ECE campus joins in on International Literacy Day, a global celebration of literacy and it's important to individuals, communities and societies.‎ Started in 1967, the International Literacy Day is a UNESCO—declared worldwide celebration of reading aimed at highlighting the importance of literacy, the ability to read and write.‎ This year, the day was September 8 and the theme was “Reading for the Future”. Students were allowed to leave their school uniform at home and come in dressed as their future jobs! Our youngest readers were also encouraged to bring in their favorite books to schools, which they then shared with classmates. ‎ The day is a good reminder to stop and ask ourselves: Is there any skill we take more for granted than the ability to read? Road signs would be confusing; you couldn't order from a menu unless it had pictures. Not being able to read goes well beyond not being able to enjoy a good book, it has much bigger implications that influence all aspects of daily life. That's what I want our school community to think about when thinking about the Literacy Day.‎ So what can we do to celebrate this day? First of all, I think it's a good chance for us to be thankful that we have the ability to read and all of the advantages the skill has brought us. It's also a great idea to start making books and literature a regular part of your dinner conversations. Talk about how life would be different without books or the ability to read.‎ 篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。 ‎ ‎5.What can we infer about the students at Shanghai Community International School?‎ A.They were all capable of reading and writing.‎ B.They enjoyed celebrating reading worldwide.‎ C.They felt easy when reading with the teacher.‎ D.They could read road signs or restaurant menus.‎ 答案:C 推理判断题。由第二段中的“students cozy (舒适) up with a good book with nursery teacher Jenna Lelievre”可知,他们与老师Jenna Lelievre在一起看书时,感到很放松、舒适。‎ ‎6.Which of the following best explains “implications” underlined in Paragraph 6?‎ A.Effects. B.Results.‎ C.Impressions. D.Advantages.‎ 答案:A 词义猜测题。 ‎ ‎7.How did the school keep pace with this year's reading theme?‎ A.By setting September 8 as this year's reading day.‎ B.By sharing the favorite books with other classmates.‎ C.By highlighting the importance of literacy and ability.‎ D.By allowing students to be dressed as their future jobs.‎ 答案:D 细节理解题。 ‎ ‎8.What is probably the best title of this text?‎ A.Book: a real friend of your life B.Theme: reading for your future C.Reading: a vital tool for your life D.Literacy Day: a day to be thankful 答案:C 标题判断题。 ‎ ‎ ‎ reminder n. 引起回忆的事物 take sth. for granted 认为…… First of all, I think it's a good chance for us to be thankful that we have the ability to read and all of the advantages the skill has brought us.‎ 译文:首先,我认为这是一个很好的机会,让我们感谢我们有阅读能力,感谢这种技能给我们带来的所有好处。 从句中thankful 后面的that引导宾语从句;the skill has brought us是省略了关系代词that/which的定语从句,修饰先行词advantages。‎ Ⅱ. As a student, you should try the following tips in order to perform well in the classroom.‎ First, know your topic.
