Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.‎ Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.‎ Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims(声称)as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.‎ If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.‎ Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.‎ You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.‎ ‎21. Some scientists believe that most of the time birds’ singing is actually ______.‎ A. an expression of happiness B. an expression of anger C. a way of greeting D. a way of warning ‎22. How does the writer explain birds’ singing?‎ A. By comparing birds with human beings. B. By telling a bird’s story.‎ C. By reporting experiment results. D. By describing birds’ daily life.‎ ‎23. What is a bird’s “territory”?‎ A. An area for which birds fight against each other.‎ B. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.‎ C. An area which a bird considers to be its own.‎ D. A place where families of other species are not accepted.‎ ‎24. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?‎ A. Because they want to find outsiders around.‎ B. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.‎ C. Because they want to invite more friends.‎ D. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears.‎ B The best bikes for the beginners When it comes to purchasing your first bike, the choice is endless, making it tough to know what to go for. Researchers at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found evidence that drinks at temperatures above 65℃, when swallowed, can cause cancer of the esophagus (食道). The researchers examined findings from other studies where tea and coffee were often served at 70℃ or above. Those studies were completed in Iran, China and South America.‎ In developed countries, health experts have linked esophageal cancer to smoking and alcoholic drinks. However, this form of cancer is more common in areas where people drink beverages at very high temperatures.‎ In Europe and the United States, many people drink coffee and tea at temperatures around 60℃.And they often add milk which lowers the temperature considerably. However, tea-drinkers in Iran and mate-drinkers in South America often enjoy their beverages at closer to 70℃.‎ The researchers note that South Americans not only drink their mate very hot, they also drink it through a metal straw. This sends the scalding liquid directly into the throat.‎ The findings, however, are good news for coffee drinkers. In 1991, the World Health Organization listed coffee as possibly carcinogenic (致癌的).” WHO officials have since changed their position on that listing. They now suggest that the temperature of your hot drink is a greater risk factor than the actual drink itself.‎ The results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible.‎ ‎28. What might be the cause of esophageal cancer in developed countries?‎ A. Smoking.‎ B. Alcoholic drinks.‎ C. Unhealthy vegetables.‎ D. Hot drinks.‎ ‎29. Where do tea-drinkers like adding milk?‎ A. In China.‎ B. In Iran.‎ C. In South America.‎ D. In Europe.‎ 30. What does the underlined word “scalding” in paragraph 5 mean?‎ A. sweet B. hot C. sour D.harmful ‎31. Which of the following descriptions is TRUE?‎ A. WHO thought coffee would cause cancer.‎ B. Drinks above 60℃ can cause esophagus cancer.‎ C. Temperature should be the primary cause of skin cancer.‎ D. Drinking milk is a much healthier way to keep away form cancer.‎ ‎ D The world seems gloomy (阴沉的) and gray when you’re feeling blue. In fact, being down might even affect how you perceive (感知) the colour blue. A recent study about colour was published in the journal Psychological Science. It shows a direct connection between a person’s ability to perceive colour and their emotions.‎ Psychologists have long known that emotions can affect the way people perceive things. That’s in part because chemicals from your brain might affect how you process what you see. “Color is such an important part of our experience,” says lead author Christopher Thorstenson, a psychologist at the university of Rochester, in New York. There’s reason, he says, that sad people commonly describe the world as “colourless” and “gray”, and happy people use words like “bright” and “colorful”.‎ In the experiment, the researchers randomly assigned people to one of two groups. People in the sadness group watched a sad scene from The Lion King. Those in the “amusement” group watched a comedy.‎ Everyone was then asked to look at red, yellow, green, and blue patches (斑点) that had been changed to a grayish colour. “Some of the patches are pretty difficulty to make out,” Thorstenson admits he says it takes some time to figure out their shade. People were scored on how accurate their colour perception was. Then they completed an emotional evaluation.‎ The result? Sad people had a hard time seeing the difference between shades along the blue-yellow colour axis (色轴). But they did not have problems seeing colours in the red-green spectrum (光谱). Thorstenson says this could be the result of an evolutionary need to see red as a response to anger. ‎ Thorstenson says these results highlight the possible important of dopamine in sight. Dopamine is a chemical that sends signals to the brain. Researchers are hoping to focus more on dopamine in the future. “We know dopamine affects how we see colours, too,” Thorstenson says “How we feel can really influence how we see the world around us” he says.‎ ‎32. According to Paragraph 2, how people describe the world reflects ________.‎ A. how they feel B. how they think ‎ C. their world view D. their language skills ‎33. In the experiment, the participants were asked to watch different programs so as to ‎ A. check their feelings B. influence their moods C. develop their interests D. test their personalities ‎34. Why were the patches made grayish in the experiment? ________.‎ A. To make them look prettier ‎ B. To make them hard to recognize C. Because it changed the participants’ attitudes ‎ D. Because it was good for the participants’ eyes ‎35. Which colour is easier to recognize for sad people? ________.‎ A. Blue B. Yellow C. Red D. Gray 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据内容,从选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 ‎ Being a good listener can help you to see the world through the eyes of others. It also increases your contact with the outside world by helping you improve your communication skills. 36 . ‎ Place yourself in the other person’s shoes. It’s easy to get lost in yourself and to only consider the influence of the other person’s “telling” on you. 37 Instead, you must think that if you had been in their shoes, you would have seen your way through the problem much faster. ‎ ‎ 38 But wait for the other person to ask your opinion before breaking the flow of their telling. Active listening requires the listener to hold back his or her own opinions temporarily and patiently wait for appropriate breaks in conversation. ‎ Know what not to do. Knowing what to avoid when you’re trying to be a good listener can be almost as helpful as knowing what to do. Avoid saying, “It’s not the end of the world” or “ 39 .” This just puts aside the person’s problems and makes him or her feel bad. ‎ ‎ 40 One important part of being a good listener is to actually absorb the information the person has told you. So, if the person is telling you about his problems with his best friend, Jake, and you've never met the guy before, you can at least remember his name so you can refer to him that way, making it seem like you’re better acquainted with the situation. If you don’t remember any names, details, or important events, then it won’t sound like you’re listening.‎ A. If so, active listening is blocked by your inward thinking.‎ B. Make eye contact and give your opinions at proper times. ‎ C. Simple as listening may seem, doing it well takes effort and practice.‎ D. Remember what you've been told.‎ E. Do not interrupt with what you feel or think about the “telling”.‎ F. That is indeed a problem. ‎ I have always been a big girl.
