By the time she was 13, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids' teeth, instead of destroying them. It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to overcome the warning, "Why can't I make a healthy candy that's good for my teeth so that my parents can't say no to it?" With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain. With her dad's permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also consulted dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria. Moore then used her savings to get her business off the ground. Afterwards, she and her father got their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore's product—Cancandy. As CanCandy's success grows, so does Moore’s reliability as an entrepreneur. Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile. Meanwhile, with her parents' help, Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early in life, she wasn't driven primarily by profit. Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 10% of AilicCandy's profits to Big Smiles. 21. How did Moore react to her dad's warning? A. She didn’t care. B. She argued with him. C. She tried to find a way out. D. She chose to consult dentists. 22. What is special about CanCandy? A. It is free of sweeteners. B. It is beneficial to dental health. C. It is sweeter than other candies. D. It is produced to a dentists' recipe. 23. What can we learn from Alice Moore's story? A. Success means getting personal desires satisfied. B. Positive thinking and action result in success. C. A youth is to be regarded with respect. D. Fame is a great thirst of the young. B The Notre Dame(巴黎圣母院) fire has been put out, but its spire (尖顶) and a large portion of its wooden roof have been damaged. The terrible destruction causes a sudden sharp pain to people around the world. “What a pity that we cannot see the damaged parts of the wonder anymore.” But the good news is that there is at least one way of seeing them, namely through a video game called Assassin’s Creed: Unity. In this game, the player can travel to one city after another and enter the buildings exactly like what they are in reality, and see Notre Dame as it was before the fire. Further, with virtual reality technology, which is already quite mature, one can even look around the undamaged Notre Dame as if it is still there. Maybe digital technology could help to better protect architectural cultural heritage. The idea of making digital models of ancient buildings to save their data dates back to the 1990s and the necessary technology has continued to advance since then. By scanning the ancient buildings with lasers, building 3D models with multiple images, as well as measuring everything precisely, engineers can make a copy as accurate as the real one. As computers and smartphones are hugely popular, the digital model has great useful value. First, it allows tourists to feel the cultural relics without touching them. The virtual tour of Dunhuang Grottoes in Gansu Province is a good example of this as tourists can view the paintings without standing near them. Furthermore, it can make the digitized cultural relics more famous by spreading awareness about them via the Internet. In 2000, a virtual tour of the Great Wall became very popular at the Hannover World Expo, which increased the number of foreign tourists visiting the site in the following years. Above all, it preserves all the information of the cultural relics. Of course, however precise a model is, it is not the original. Maybe we will have better technologies in the future, but the digital technology offers a practical way to preserve architectural cultural heritage at the moment. 24. What can we see about Notre Dame in the game? A. Its original look. B. Its wooden shape. C. The big fire. D. The damaged Notre Dame. 25. What will engineers do to create a digital copy of the ancient buildings? A. Build 3D models of full size. B. Scan the photos of the buildings C. Improve the technology needed. D. Measure all the parts exactly. 26. How does the author prove the digital copy has vital practical importance? A. By comparison. B. By classification. C. By giving examples. D. By listing data. 27. What is the author’s attitude towards the application of the technology? A. Delighted B. Doubtful C. Supportive D. Conservative C The Silk Road is arguably the most famous long-distance trade route of the ancient world. This passage connected Europe in the West with China in the East, and allowed the exchange of goods, technology, and ideas between the two civilizations. Although merchants could make huge profits travelling the road, it was not without risk. The main Silk Road started in Chang’an (known today as Xi’an), the early Han capital. Travelers commencing their journey from this city could take a northern route that would take them across China’s northwestern provinces. After this, they would face the Gobi Desert, arguably the greatest danger of the Silk Road. The Gobi Desert, the largest desert in Asia, consists mainly of rocky, hard earth. This feature made it easier for traders to travel across, compared to sandy deserts like the neighboring Taklamakan Desert. Like other deserts, the Gobi Desert is dry and hot, and therefore the biggest challenge travelers faced was obtaining enough water for themselves as well as for their camels. So, rest stops were created along the route, allowing travelers to rest, eat and drink. These places also promoted the exchange of goods, and even ideas, amongst the travelers who stopped there. Usually, the rest stops were placed within a day’s journey of each other. In this way, travelers could avoid spending too much time in the desert, which would make them targets for robbers, another danger of the Silk Road. Once through the Gobi Desert, travelers would continue their journey into Iran, Turkey, and finally Europe. Whilst this part of the journey may have been less dangerous, it is not entirely without its perils. 28.The underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refers to . A. making huge profits B. traveling the Silk Road C. exchanging goods and ideas D. connecting different civilizations 29.Why was the Gobi Desert easier to cross than other deserts? A. The desert’s surface was easier to walk on. B. Camels for transportation were easier to find. C. It was smaller and could be crossed in less time. D. There were more natural water sources available. 30. What can we guess about the rest stops in the Gobi Desert? A. Travelers were offered free accommodation. B. They were located around the edges of the desert. C. Travelers staying there were often attacked by criminals. D. They were shared by travelers from different countries. 31. What is the passage mainly about? A. The origins of the Silk Road. B. The benefits of the Silk Road. C. The difficulties faced by Silk Road travelers. D. The cultural exchanges among Silk Road traveler. D A new study suggests that patients with breast cancer who take additional vitamins during chemotherapy(化疗) treatment may face increased risks. Researchers said the use of dietary supplement(s 补充剂)that increase levels of antioxidants, iron, vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids appeared to lower the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Researchers reported their findings in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Christine Ambrosone is the head of cancer prevention and control at the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York. She said, “From this study and others in the literature, it seems that it may not be wise to take supplements during chemotherapy.” “It’s thought that antioxidants might interfere with the ability of chemotherapy to kill cancer cells,” Ambrosone said. Some doctors have been advising patients for a number of years not to take antioxidants during chemotherapy. “But there was no strong empirical data for that recommendation,” Ambrosone said. So, Ambrosone and other researchers decided to study whether supplement use might affect chemotherapy's effectiveness. They looked for evidence in an earlier study on diet, exercise, lifestyle and cancer results. In the earlier research, people who took part were asked about their use of supplements at the beginning of and during treatment, and about their lifestyle, diet and exercise. The researchers studied 1,134 patients who filled out the surveys and followed them for a median of six years. The researchers searched for possibilities that might increase the risk of the disease reappearing or of death. They found that patients who took any supplements at the beginning of and during chemotherapy were 41 percent more likely to have their breast cancer return than those who did not. In addition, the supplement takers were 40 percent more likely to die later on compared to patients using no supplements. The supplements included vitamin A, C and E. Those taking vitamin B12 and iron supplements were at greater risk of cancer returning, the researchers said. 32.Why did Ambrosone and other researchers conduct the study? A. To know about the patients’ lifestyle. B. To seek evidence for the recommendation. C. To see whether patients take supplements. D. To examine chemotherapy’s effectiveness. 33.The researchers discovered the risks of taking additional supplements by . A. giving examples B. analyzing causes C. making a comparison D. listing figures 34.What can we know from this passage? A. Taking vitamins may increase the risk of breast cancer. B. Ambrosone is the first one to warn patients off taking antioxidants. C. Antioxidants may increase the ability of chemotherapy to kill cancer cells. D. Patients may face more dangers if taking supplements during chemotherapy. 35.What section of a newspaper is most likely to have this article? A. Health. B. Entertainment. C. Education. D. But the next step is making sure that you remember what you’ve read! 36 You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images (形象) may fly right out of your head. Here are a few tricks for remembering what you read. ● 37 If the plot, characters, or word usage is confusing for you, you likely won’t be able to remember what you read. It’s a bit like reading a foreign language. If you don’t understand what you’re reading, how would you remember it? But there are a few things you can do. Use a dictionary; look up the difficult words. ● Are you connected? Does a character remind you of a friend? Does the setting make you want to visit the place? Does the book inspire you, and make you want to read more? With some books, you may feel a connection right away. 38 How willing are you to make the connections happen? ● Read it; hear it; be it! Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And, put some character into the words. When he was writing his novels, Charles Dickens would act out the parts of the characters. He’d make faces in the mirror, and change his voice for each character. 39 ● How often do you read? If you read frequently, you’ll likely have an easier time with remembering what you’re reading (and what you’ve read). 40 As you make reading a regular part of your life, you’ll make more connections, stay more focused and understand the text better. You’ll learn to enjoy literature—as you remember what you read! A. Are you confused? B. Practice makes perfect. C. What’s your motivation? D. Memory is sometimes a tricky thing. E. Marking helps you remember what you read. F. But other books require a bit more work on your part. G.
