If you asked my friends about my mother, they would say, “That woman has a heart of gold.” I agree one hundred percent. I think the reason why she is such a wonderful person is that the Holy Spirit lives within her. She is very holy and has persuaded me to go to church with her every Sunday. About six years ago my mom decided to pursue her lifelong goal of becoming a teacher. She knew it would be hard work raising three kids, doing housework and studying at the same time. However, she believed it would pay off. What my mother didn't realize was that not all things pay off in this unfair world. After four hard years of school, she graduated on a warm spring day. It was unbelievable. My aunt drove up from Virginia to celebrate this fantastic day. It was the first time I had ever cried about being happy. It's strange how fast a life can change. Two months later, the unpredictable happened. My mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (多发性硬化症). I could not believe this could happen after all the good she had done for people. I was very confused and cried every day. My faith in God just disappeared and so did my mom's dream of becoming a teacher. Then, I decided I must move on with my life and accept the fact that she might never get better. Since my decision, I have become more mature, responsible and active in school and work. Through the years I have always been able to change negative situations into positive ones. I'm happy with my life now. 4.Which of the following can best describe Alice? A.Honest. B.Helpful. C.Greedy. D.Unconcerned. 5.What else did Alice have to do when studying? A.Drive a car and go to church. B.Teach students and raise kids. C.Do housework and teach at school. D.Look after children and keep house. 6.According to the text, the author's mother ________. A.recovered from illness B.no longer had faith in God C.didn't realize her dream as a teacher D.changed negative situations into positive ones unwillingly 7.Which of the following is the best title for the text? A.Fighting against Kinds of Diseases B.Mother Gave Me Life Experience C.Belief in God Brought Me Good Luck D.How to Become a Responsible and Active Man C You might make a disgusted face when you notice that the person waiting in their car at the red light next to you is picking their nose, but admit it, you do it too. And while it might be the natural option when there isn't a box of tissues around, it can be bad for you. The main reasons why people feel the need to pick their nose are to clear it of dried liquid, stop an itch (痒), or just because it feels good. Boogers(鼻屎) form when dried liquid and cilium, the tiny hairs that line the nostrils(鼻孔), trap the dust, dirt, and other things. When boogers build up in your nose, it can be uncomfortable, and sometimes just blowing them into a tissue doesn't do_the_trick. Otolaryngologist Erich P. Voigt, MD, told Business Insider that picking your nose can cause injuries and bleeding within your nostrils. That's not terribly damaging, but when the bacteria from your hands get into your body, it can cause a cold. So doctors strongly suggest not picking the nose. If dry winter air is causing the dirty liquid to harden in your nostrils, making you want to pick, consider damping the air at home, or taking a steam shower to soften things up in there. Children, who are most famous for having a finger in their nose, sometimes don't realize how much injury they're causing, and sometimes it can lead to nose bleeding. So, next time you go to pick your nose, think about how many bacteria are on your hands and in your boogers, and maybe reach for a tissue instead. Even if you're alone, and not waiting for the light to turn green, please, use a tissue. 8.Why do people pick their nose? A.Because they want to disgust others. B.Because they have the need to do it. C.Because they have nothing else to do. D.Because they don't have tissues around. 9.Which of the following can replace the underlined part “do the trick” in Paragraph 1? A.Act. B.Cheat. C.Play. D.Help. 10.Which can help people avoid a cold and flu according to the text? A.Stopping picking the nose. B.Using tissues regularly. C.Taking a shower every day. D.Keeping the air wet at home. 11.What should you do when you have to pick your nose? A.Be careful not to cause bleeding. B.Use a tissue instead of bare fingers. C.Wait for the light to turn red if you are driving. D.Wash your hands and clear your fingernails. D According to the Global Times, it is reported that two online videos showing children telling their parents “I love you” have gone viral in China. The first, filmed by an Anhui TV station, shows a number of college students telling their parents they love them. The responses are mixed. “Are you drunk?” asked one parent. In another similar video, shot by a Shanxi TV station, a father responded even less patiently — “I am going to a meeting, so cut the crap.” Why don't Chinese families use those words? Theories revolve around the nature of Confucian teaching. “The parents' responses show that many Chinese are not good at expressing positive emotions,” Xia Xueluan, a sociologist from Peking University, told the Global Times. “They are used to educating children with negative language.” This isn't the first time that China has done some soulsearching about familial love — last year China Daily asked a crosssection of people if they said “I love you” to their parents, spouses, and children. “I have never said ‘I love you’ to my family, and I don't think I will in the future,” one 56yearold man told the paper.“Saying it aloud is embarrassing for me.” Still, that doesn't mean that love can't be expressed. In a separate article, China Daily spoke to Zhao Mengmeng, a 31yearold woman who said she had never told her father she loved him facetoface (“I find it a bit odd”). Sometimes actions speak louder than words. Zhao gave her father a photo album featuring photographs of them together on almost every one of her birthdays in June 2012. The pictures went viral online, being forwarded hundreds of thousands of times on Weibo. “I didn't sleep the night I heard about it,” her father told China Daily after the story attracted mainstream attention. “I have now memorized some of the comments on the collection of pictures.” 12.What can we infer from the text? A.It is not direct for Chinese families to say “I love you”. B.Chinese parents are too proud to express “I love you”. C.Chinese parents are good at expressing positive emotions. D.Young parents in China are willing to express “I love you”. 13.Why don't Chinese parents express “I love you” to their children? A.Because they can't express it. B.Because they are not in the habit of expressing so. C.Because they think it unnecessary. D.Because they think it should be done only among young couples. 14.Zhao Mengmeng expressed “I love you” to her father by ________. A.giving him an album containing their photos B.kissing her father's face and telling him by words C.speaking it out bravely in a TV program D.writing out the three words in a letter 15.What's the author's attitude toward the statements about “I love you”? A.Opposed. B.Objective. C.Critical.
