Finding ways to protect the earth's wildlife and conserve the natural world they inhabit(居住) is now more important than ever.‎ Dodos ‎ The dodo is a classic example of how human caused damage to the earth's biology. The flightless dodo was native to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It lived on fruit fallen from the island's trees and lived unthreatened until humans arrived in 1505. The easily controlled bird became a source of food for sailors and was attacked by animals introduced to the island by humans such as pigs, monkeys and rats. The population of dodos rapidly decreased and the last one was killed in 1681.‎ Rhinos (犀牛)‎ The rhino horn is a highly prized item for Asian medicine. This has led to the animal being hunted in its natural habitat.Once widespread in Africa and Eurasia, most rhinos now live in protected natural parks and reserves. Their numbers have ‎ rapidly decreased in the last 50 years, and the animals remain under constant threat from poachers.‎ The Giant Pandas The future of the World Wildlife Fund's symbol is far from certain. As few as 1,000 remain in the world. The Chinese government has set up 33 panda reserves to protect these beautiful animals and made poaching them punishable with 20 years in prison. However, the panda's distinct black and white patched coat fetches a high price on the black market and determined poachers still pose(造成) one of the most serious threats to the animals' continued existence.‎ Whales The International Whaling Commission is fighting to ensure the survival of the whale species. Despite the fact that onethird of the world's oceans have been declared whale sanctuaries(保护区), 7 out of 13 whale species remain endangered.Hunted for their rich supply of oil, their numbers have decreased to just 300. Collisions (碰撞) with ships, poisonous pollution and being caught in fishing nets are other major causes of whale deaths.‎ Tigers The last 100 years has seen a 95% reduction in the numbers of remaining tigers to between 5,000 and 7,000 and the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tiger are already extinct. The German won the battle of giants in his last lift, winning his country's first gold medal in the event at this year's Games.‎ ‎ Steiner's winning lift was also the last effort of the sport for this Olympics at which China earned eight of the 15 golds.‎ ‎ Steiner was born in Austria and represented his country of birth at the Athens Olympics four years ago, placing seventh in the lower ‎105 kg category, but had a falling out with Austria's weightlifting federation afterwards.‎ ‎ He applied for German citizenship in 2005 and got married, but his career went into deep freeze as he could not compete without a passport. He finally obtained the document last January.‎ ‎ The German, who turns 26 on Monday, had come to these Games on a mission(使命) to win the title for his wife Susann, who died in a car accident in July last year. The German team said he used the personal tragedy to motivate himself to win the gold medal.‎ ‎ Chigishev was the strongest in the snatch session Tuesday. He kissed his fists after a 210-kg lift that gave him a 7-kg advantage over fourth—placed Steiner going into the second event—the clean and jerk. He lit out a victorious roar(吼叫) after clearing ‎250 kg in his last lift, but the glory was short-lived as Steiner stunned(使瞠目) everyone with his final, winning clean and jerk effort.‎ Steiner had finished seventh in the 2004 Olympics in the ‎105 kg weight category, and took the gold in the 2008 European Championship + ‎105 kg snatch competition, bronze in the clean and jerk and silver overall, with a total weight of ‎446 kg.‎ ‎ World Champion Victors Scerbatihs of Latvia settled for bronze.‎ ‎25. Steiner won the gold by lifting  .‎ A. ‎105 kg B. ‎461 kg C. ‎258 kg D. ‎‎210kg ‎26. Four years ago at the Athens Olympics Steiner represented  .‎ A. Austria B. Germany C. Australia D. ‎Russia ‎27. What is the best title of the passage?‎ A. Narrow Victory B. Pitiful Failure ‎ C. Gold Medal for His Dearest Wife D. Strongest Man of the World C When I was three, the most children I made friends with were about three or four. But I was shy and didn't join in activities. Even in preschool, I tried to avoid the groups at play. I just didn't fit in. But I kept on smiling and trying to be friendly.‎ The adults in my life were more easily understood than my peers(同龄人). I couldn't understand why none of them lived up to the adult standards. Manners, vocabulary, reading... all of these meant nothing to them. They were children. At that point, I wasn't any more.‎ ‎ I started kindergarten(幼儿园) knowing how to count to 100 and how to read. But even though I was far ahead of some of the other children, I was no perfect student. I was excited by all the friends I could make. But soon I discovered that I was hurt easily by their words. I made friends, but I didn't keep them, and eventually, I was left alone. I sat alone, trying to keep happy and pretending that I didn't need anyone else to be happy.‎ ‎ My parents loved me. I know they did. My mom became the main earner when I was very young. My dad also worked hard, but he didn't get paid quite well. But I don't understand why I'd always been left to my own toys as a child. I explored the world in my own way, which gave me loneliness. The loneliness would invade(入侵) my body and pull me down to the floor, making me cry and bite myself. My life was damaged ‎ by the loneliness for years. Unlike other children at my age, I really didn't have a friend to spend time with. So I made them in my head.‎ ‎ The loneliness still controls me now. It's the reason why I was diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (分离性身份识别障碍) (DID). At times, I feel the choking and biting, and I know it's the younger me reminding me I still have a lot to move beyond.‎ ‎28. What can we know about the young author from the first paragraph?‎ A. We can learn from the passage that now the author   .‎ A. has recovered from his loneliness B. hopes to make many friends C. is suffering a lot from his loneliness D. always cries in front of strangers D Like it or love it, social media is a major part of life. Clicking on a thumbs-up or a heart icon (图标) is an easy way to stay in touch. Whether you’re on Facebook, What’s App or Twitter, the way of keeping in touch is no longer face to face, but instead screen to screen, highlighted by the fact that more than 1 billion people are using Facebook every day. Social media has become second nature — but what impact is this having on us?‎ Lauren Sherman and her team, who study the brain at Temple University in Philadelphia, mixed 20 teens’ photos with 10 other pictures from public Instagram ‎ accounts. Then they randomly gave half of the images many likes (between 23 and 45; most had more than 30). They gave the other half no more than 22 likes (most had fewer than 15).‎ The researchers wanted to find out how the participants’ brains were responding to the different images. While the teens were in a machine, researchers asked them to either like an image or skip to the next one. Teens were much more likely to like images that seemed popular — those that had more than 23 likes, Sherman’s team found. The kids tended to skip pictures with few likes.‎ As part of the experiment, participants were also shown a range of “neutral” photos showing things like food and friends, and “risky” photos concerning cigarettes and alcohol. When looking at photos showing risky behaviors, such as smoking or drinking — no matter how many likes they had — the brain region linked to cognitive (认知的) control tended to become less active. These kinds of pictures can lower the viewer’s self-control. That means what you like online has the power to influence not just what others like, but even what they do. Viewing pictures like these could make teens let down their guard when it comes to experimenting with drugs and alcohol, Sherman worries.‎ ‎32. What does the text focus on?‎ A. The influence of social media. B. The self-control of teens.‎ C. The behaviors of teens. D. The popularity of social media.‎ ‎33. Which of the following might be included in the experiment?‎ A. Seventeen images are given 20 likes. B. Fifteen images are given 25 likes.‎ C. Fifteen images are given 42 likes. D. Eight images are given 40 likes.‎ ‎34. What’s Sherman’s concern about online photos?‎ A. More likes may be given. B. Misbehaviors may be encouraged.‎ C. More risky pictures may be posted. D. Cognitive control may become less active.‎ ‎35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?‎ A. To condemn immoral social behaviors.‎ B. To promote modern social media.‎ C. To introduce a new research.‎ D. To explain the brain system.‎ 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,‎ 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Ways to Live a Happy Life If you want to change something for better, you should realize that it's the high time to take advantage of both positive and negative things, which take place in your life.
