Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. Irene continued the work by developing X-ray facilities in military hospitals in France and Belgium. Her services were recognized in the form of a Military’s Medal by the French government. In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later. Like her mother, Irene combined family and career. C John Sand was one of the most influential teachers, and people, I have ever met. Having him for two years during high school, for both history and study hall, he taught me more than any other teacher has been able to. His unusual attitude reflects his methods of teaching. He was constantly trying to push us out of our comfort zones with video projects we did about once a month. He wanted us to face and accept how other people saw us to prepare us for the real world. He was always making colorful Power Points to teach us the latest topic instead of standing in front of us lecturing for a period, putting us to sleep like many teachers do. He did not give us homework one day and have it due the next, but instead gave us a schedule of the homework for the section and left the responsibility up to us to remember to do it, making us ready for life after high school. Then we know the responsibility is all on us. Mr. Sand is a responsible family man. He took whatever time we had left in class to show us his newest vacation videos or his children’s sports videos. He balances his family and his career so nicely. Mr. Sand always encouraged us to explore the cultures of the world. He would tell us stories of his travels across Europe and his adventures around the US, while many teachers just force the idea of college. Many people may not ever get to have the experience of having Mr. Sand as a teacher or ever be affected by him like I was. I feel sorry for them. Putting aside that he was my teacher, he was also the person who influenced me greatly and taught me things that went beyond the school courses. 29. According to the writer, why was John Sand different from other teachers? A.He never gave homework to his students. B.He clearly knew what his students would do in the future. C.He always made his classes lively and interesting with colorful Power Points. D.He often encouraged his students to face the real world bravely. 30. Which of the following shows that the writer was greatly affected by Mr. Sand? A.He realizes what makes an excellent teacher. B.He has the courage to take great adventures. C.He feels more confident within comfort zones. D.He knows how to deal with life after high school. 31. What would be the best title for the passage? A.An outstanding teacher. B.A valuable experience of schooling. C.A kind family man and a father. D.An unusual method of teaching. D As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more. Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping(录像) the families while they’ ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They’ found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.” The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.” 32. The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to_________. A. report on the findings of a study B. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table C. show the relationship between parents and children D. give information about family problems 33. Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ___________. A. they are busy serving food to their children B. they are busy keeping order at the dinner table C. they have to pay more attention to younger children D. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family 34. By saying “Middle children are invisible” in paragraph 3. Lewis means that middle children____. A. have to help their parents to serve dinner B. are often kept away from the dinner table C. get the least attention from the family D. find it hard to keep up with other children 35. Which of the following statements would the writer agree to? A. It is important to have the right food for children. B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner. C. Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner D. Parents should talk to each of their children frequently. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Remember What You Read Reading is important. Here are a few tricks for remembering what you read. ● 37._________ If the plot, characters, or word usage is confusing for you, you likely won’t be able to remember what you read. It’s a bit like reading a foreign language. If you don’t understand what you’re reading, how would you remember it? Here are the opinions of our group. First of all, as middle school students, we should be kind and friendly to others, always ready to give a helping hand to those in need. Besides, we must behave ourselves, obeying both class and school rules and doing what we can for the class. Also, it matters a great deal to be honest and trustworthy in our daily life. Secondly, we should respect the old and love the young, especially showing concern for our parents and our teachers by understanding them and following their instructions. Last but not least, we should learn to communicate with others. Try to be considerate and put ourselves in others’ shoes, especially when frictions come about. We hope all of us can enjoy our school life. 听力原文: Text 1 W: Why are you so happy? M: I got an A on my test! I studied so hard and it paid off. I feel great! W: Congratulations! I’m very proud of you. Let me take you out for ice cream to celebrate. (1) Text 2 W: I have two weeks off at the end of August. I’m thinking of traveling to Argentina. M: That sounds great. I grew up in Chile, (2) so my parents took me all around South America. You should go to Columbia if you get a chance. It’s beautiful. Text 3 W: I just can’t believe this. I told them I needed the flowers this morning. Are they really going to deliver them tomorrow? (3) M: I tried to help. I even went to the shop to see if they could do a rush order. I’m sorry. Text 4 M: I’d like to check out. W: Just a moment, please. I’ll draw up your bill for you. The room rate will be $100 per night, not including 10% tax and 5% service charge. (4) Text 5 M: Let’s exchange phone numbers. That way, if one of us is absent, we can call each other for the homework. W: That’s a great idea. My number is 555… (5) M: Wait a second, this pen just died. Let me get another one. W: Here, take my pencil. Text 6 W: Thank you for calling Ellen Jay’s Bookstore. What can I do for you? (7) M: Hello, I’d like to buy the newly released book Back to Nature. It was reviewed in today’s newspaper. I don’t remember how to get to your store, though. (6) Is it on 14th Street or 16th Street? I’m going to stop by your store on my way home. W: Neither. We’re located on 17th Street, and you need to walk three blocks down. However, we’re closing in five minutes. You will have to come tomorrow instead. We’re open at 9:00 a.m. Text 7 M: Where are you going? W: I’m heading out for some fresh air. I feel lightheaded all of a sudden. (8) M: Are you okay? Would you like some water? (9) W: I’m fine. I think I just got too hot. M: I’ll come take a walk with you. Let me grab my jacket. W: Okay. M: It’s chilly out here! W: It feels really nice. I was sick last week, so I’m just not feeling like myself. M: Do you want to walk down by the water? Some sea air would be good for you. W: Sure. Which way is it? M: It’s just straight ahead. You’ll see the ocean soon. Maybe we’ll even catch the tail end of the sunset. (10) W: I should have brought my camera. Text 8 W: What are you going to major in? M: I’m thinking of majoring in art history, but I also love biology. What about you? W: I’m a math major. I want to become a high school math teacher. (11) M: I was thinking of becoming a science teacher, but I don’t think I’d be very good in the front of a classroom. W: I think you just get used to it. When I was a little kid, I was really shy. But then I took a public speaking class in high school, and it really helped me. We had to speak in front of a group every week. (12) M: Yeah, I guess practice makes perfect. What year are you in school? W: I’m a junior. How about you? M: I’m still in the second year. Wow, so you only have a year left after this one? W: Yeah. It feels strange. I’m not ready to graduate yet. M: Maybe you’ll feel differently next year. W: I doubt it. I’m really going to miss college. M: Really? I can’t wait to get out into the real world. (13) Text 9 W: Hello, Mike. How do you like living in New York? M: It’s really amazing. I’m happy to get the chance to be here for a month. However, I still don’t completely understand the recycling rules. (14) W: Yes. It always takes time to get used to the way of life in a new place. Do you litter? M: Of course not. I even throw my cigarettes in the trash when I’m done smoking. How about you? W: It is easier for me, because I don’t smoke at all. But I am glad you throw your trash away. M: However, I have three trash cans. I am confused. You know, in my old town, I only needed one trash can. (16) You have been here much longer than me. Can you help me? W: Sure. First, you should know that only one type of trash goes into each can. One can is for paper products, one is for plastic, and one is for glass. (15) M: But in my hometown, there were people who would separate the trash for me. Don’t you think it’s a better way to save us time and energy? W: But it’s a heavy burden for the cleaners. In order to keep the city clean and recycle the resources efficiently, you must separate your trash yourself. That is the rule. M: Thanks a lot. I understand now. Text 10 Good morning. This is Michael Jones here with the 10:00 News Report. Earlier this week, we heard about Milton, the dog that traveled over 3,000 miles to reunite with his family. (17) When the Johnson family moved from California to New York, they couldn’t find their dog and they were sad to leave him behind. About a month later, Milton showed up at their doorstep in New York. We cannot believe how far this dog traveled! The family will be doing an interview in the studio tomorrow morning. In other news, there’s been an outbreak of car thefts in Orange County this week. About ten cars have stolen from outside their owners’ homes since Monday. (18) If you see or hear anything, please call 911. About ten people found themselves stuck on a roller coaster after it broke down at the Six Flags theme park on Tuesday in Union City. (19) The victims swung upside down for around three minutes as staff worked to restart the roller coaster. Fortunately, no one was hurt. Six Flags has said that they check their rides very seriously, and that this was simply an unfortunate accident. That’s it for the news. When we come back from a commercial break, (20) Michelle Smith will be here with the weather report. 查看更多
