The event happened late in an evening when Danny DiPietro was being driven home from hockey practice by his mom.‎ That’s when the young boy noticed an open garage (车库) and a figure (身影) that he believed was a dog outside an apartment building near his house. Given the freezing cold weather, the young boy got a feeling that something was not right. But instead of dismissing it like most kids his age would have, he insisted that his mother, Dawn, find out what was going on. Dawn tried to make Danny believe that no one would leave a dog out in such cold weather, but he refused to take no for an answer.‎ Dawn finally gave in and decided to drive to the area with the family dog and see if there was any truth to Danny’s hunch (直觉).Sure enough, as she got closer to the apartment building she noticed a garage that was wide open and someone waving madly for help. Upon getting there, she realized that it was not a dog the young boy had seen, but Kathleen St. Onge. The 80-year-old had fallen down on some ice in her garage and had been lying there for two hours, unable to get up.‎ Dawn rushed home to get her husband to help and called 911. Instead, the aunt put Yorke to work as her maid(佣人). Determined to go to school, Yorke returned home and began selling water in a nearby city to raise money for her education. However, her father spent the money she had earned on a motorcycle.‎ Yorkers story is familiar to girls growing up in Ghana. There, a girl’s place is in the home. Educating girls is considered a waste of money.‎ ‎“It happens more than it should, where parents have money to send their girls to school but choose not to,” says Ryan Roach, a volunteer in Ghana, where nearly 55% of girls are not allowed to attend secondary school. Cultural beliefs say education is not a wise investment (投资).‎ The White House’s Let Girls Learn is working to change this view of girls’ education, in Ghana and in countries worldwide. Former First Lady Michelle Obama ‎ says parents have to be persuaded that girls’ education is a better investment than household labor. A study shows that for every year of secondary-school education, a girl’s earning power increases by 18%. Today, Let Girls Learn works in 13 countries, and there are plans to expand the program. Recently, Let Girls Learn hosted a 24-hour event to come up with creative solutions for the barriers (障碍) to girls’ education.‎ Yorke, now 22, is about to finish high school. Thanks to Let Girls Learn, she plans to attend college and study computer science. She says working alongside college students at the Let Girls Learn event strengthened her determination. “I’m focused on my books,” says Yorke. “I know if I study hard, I, too, can go to university and live a happy life.”‎ ‎28. To get a computer-related job.‎ D Robots come in many shapes and sizes, but scientists in Zurich, Switzerland, have developed one new robot called Pleurobot, which looks and acts just like a salamander (火蜥蜴).‎ To create the robot, scientists took hundreds of X-rays of real salamanders. They studied the images of these animals to see which joints (关节) and muscles the animals use as they move. Then the scientists built the Pleurobot’s skeleton to move just like the real thing. This makes the robot’s movements incredibly lifelike.‎ According to experts, salamanders were among the first animals to develop a skeleton and nervous system that allowed them to travel on land. “By studying the modern salamander, we have a time window to the ancestors of all vertebrates(脊椎动物), including humans,” Auke Ijspeert, the designer of the robot, told scholastic News Online.‎ Both people and salamanders have a spinal cord (脊髓). An injury to the spinal cord can result in the inability to move. Now, there is no cure for paralysis (瘫痪). Ijspeert hopes that the Pleurobot can help change that. Because these studies could help researchers develop new ways to help people who have been paralyzed by spinal cord injuries.‎ Scientists think that the Pleurobot could also be used for search-and-rescue tasks too dangerous for humans. Because the robot is low to the ground and has a wide range of motion, it could be used to get into dangerous places, like fallen buildings, to look for survivors. Thanks to its waterproof suit, the robotic salamander could even participate in underwater missions.‎ Experts are now working on a smaller, sturdier (harder to break) model of the Pleurobot. They expect this one to be even better suited for getting into small spaces to do dangerous work.‎ ‎32. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?‎ A. How real salamanders move. B. What the Pleurobot looks like.‎ C. Why scientists invented the Pleurobot. D. How scientists designed the Pleurobot.‎ ‎33. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 4 refer to?‎ A. The shape of the spinal cord. B. The movement of robotic animals.‎ C. The problem of spinal cord injuries. D. The way the brain controls the spinal cord.‎ ‎34. Which of the following can best describe the Pleurobot?‎ A. Fashionable. B. Entertaining. C. Functional. D. Power-saving.‎ ‎35. The text is most probably ________.‎ A. a news report B. a research paper C. an advertisement D. an official document 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ As is known to all, we are always consuming various foods. The end result of this chemical reaction is sugar for the plant to “eat. ’’ The plant gives off water and oxygen.‎ ‎_37_ Plants have special structures called chloroplasts (叶绿体) that animals don ’ t have. These structures are filled with chlorophyll, which gives leafy green plants their green color. Their main job is to absorb light from the sun. Chloroplasts can absorb every color except green. Light makes chlorophyll active. It creates an energy that separates water out into hydrogen and oxygen.‎ ‎_38_ Hydrogen from the water combines with carbon from the carbon dioxide we breathe out. Oxygen is sent out into the air.‎ ‎_39_ Plants rely on the carbon dioxide that we breathe out, and we rely on the oxygen that they “breathe” out. This is one good reason for protecting plant life on Earth. Many plants can produce a constant supply of oxygen for us. We need plants in order to survive.‎ Conservation (保护) projects around the globe are aimed at protecting our ‎ natural resources, including numerous species of plants. _40_‎ A. Plants are producers.‎ B. Chemical reactions take place.‎ C. Animals can’t live without water.‎ D. People and plants make perfect partners.‎ E. So how do plants do it, and why can’t we?‎ F.
