Now the rest of the world seems to be following suit.‎ The world of soccer is also being affected. In Italy, several matches in February were played behind closed doors (without spectators). Meanwhile, entire soccer leagues in Japan, South Korea, and China’s Super League have all been placed on hold ( 暂 停 ). There is also the possibility that Euro 2020 – an international soccer tournament for European teams – could be cancelled. When asked about the cancellations, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said, “The health of persons is much more important than any football game. If games have to be postponed, then we have to go through that.”‎ The outbreak is also impacting cultural events around the world. Facing Europe’s largest COVID-19 epidemic, with over 2,000 confirmed cases ( 确诊病例) so far, Italy also cut short its iconic Venice carnival (狂欢节) and Milan Fashion Week show. The latter was being live-streamed from an empty theater.‎ Now, the biggest event in doubt is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Held every four years, the event attracts hundreds of thousands of people and has not been postponed since 1944 – due to World War II. Set to begin on July 24, Japanese officials remain optimistic. In a press conference, Toshiro Muto, Tokyo 2020 CEO said, both the Olympics and Paralympics (残奥会) will go ahead as planned. He added, “The situation of the coronavirus infection is difficult to predict, but we will take measures [so] that we’ll have a safe Olympic Games.”‎ Speaking to the Washington Post about the Games, infectious ( 传染的) disease researcher Yvonne Maldonado said, “You bring many people together, and then you ship them back all over the world: That’s the perfect way to transmit. If you want to disseminate ( 传 播 ) a disease, that would be the way to do it.”‎ On Feb 26, the World Health Organization said the virus was spreading faster outside China than inside for the first time, prompting ( 敦 促 ) many countries to follow China’s strict isolation measures.‎ 16. What does the underlined phrase “following suit” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?‎ A. Doing what you want.‎ B. Doing what you are told.‎ C. Doing what others are doing.‎ D. Doing what others don’t do.‎ 17. What do we know about some events in different countries?‎ A. Venice Carnival was livestreamed this year.‎ B. Euro 2020 will probably not be held as planned.‎ C. Many soccer matches were canceled in Italy last month.‎ D. Soccer leagues in Japan and South Korea played behind closed doors.‎ 18. What would Yvonne Maldonado suggest to Japanese officials about the 2020 Olympics?‎ A. They should put it off.‎ B. They should give it up.‎ C. They should hold it as scheduled.‎ D. They should change to another city.‎ B There you are, facing your biggest fear. It could be a giant spider, falling from the sky, or being chased by a monster (怪兽). All of a sudden, you wake up in your bed and your fear is nowhere to be found.‎ It was only a nightmare (噩梦)! Even though it wasn’t real, your heart is still racing and you are scared that it might become real. And, even worse, a perfectly good night of sleep is ruined! Is there any way to stop nightmares from happening?‎ Recently, some new studies say that people can control nightmares with lucid ( 清 醒 的 ) dreams. A lucid dream is where the person dreaming is aware that they are in a dream and might even be able to control it.‎ Unfortunately, nightmares are just a part of life that we have to deal with. But sometimes, nightmares can get out of control. When nightmares become a frequent problem, it is called a nightmare disorder.‎ According to Rachel Salas, a sleep disorder expert and an associate professor ( 副教授) of neurology ( 神经学) at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, US, nightmares are very complex, and researchers are still trying to understand them.‎ What researchers do know is that many dreams happen during what is called rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Interestingly enough, brain scans (扫描) of people in REM sleep showed similar brain activity as if they were awake. “ When we go into REM sleep, our muscle activity decreases. Otherwise, we’d act out our dreams,” Salas said.‎ If you suffer from nightmares, learning how to control them with lucid dreaming might be something that can help. Sérgio Arthuro Mota-Rolim, a postdoctoral researcher at Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte in Natal‎, ‎Brazil, suggests that the best way to stop a nightmare in its tracks is by making yourself wake up.‎ It’s normal to have nightmares every once in a while. But, if you find yourself losing too much sleep from nightmares, it might be time to try out lucid dreaming. Choose the best answer:‎ 16. What is the article mainly about?‎ A. They have been through years of hard work and good times, always supporting each other.‎ As a child, I remember my parents working side by side for spring, fall, winter, and summer cleaning or working in the yard, or painting, and wallpapering.‎ My parents bought a house in Elmont. Dad, even today, can’t understand why she always wants to go out!‎ Mom is still active with the Red Hatters women’s group and her gardening club. Dad spoils her by taking care of the house, but also watches a lot of baseball and does jigsaw puzzles ( 拼 图游戏).‎ The key to their successful marriage is that they respect each other.‎ With the help of my brother, they also stay current with new technology. Their latest acquisition is an iPad.‎ My brother, who is 67, and I (now 69), have always known we are lucky to have such great parents. They have shown us what love is, what hard work is, and what respect is all about.‎ My daughter and I try to see them almost every weekend when we play cards together and catch up on the week’s news.‎ My parents are the glue that holds our whole family together, making holidays and ordinary days special to us all.‎ I know we are lucky to have them both, I even save all of their voice-mail messages, just so I’ll have their voice to hear when eventually they are not here. But Mom keeps telling us all she’s definitely ( 绝对地) going to live to be 100. So we will have a few more holidays, birthdays, and memories to experience.‎ 16. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn’t know she was going to America and would not be returning.‎ Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, "Don't worry, Grandma, nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see that it’s going to bring both of us luck." And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.‎ Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.‎ ‎"I'm sorry. Do I know you?" Eliza asked.‎ ‎"I'm sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend," the old woman replied. "She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours."
