She ran with her father every day. After a few weeks, she told her father, "Daddy, what I'd really love to do is break the world's long-distance running record for women." Her father checked the Guinness World Records and found that the farthest any woman had run was 80 miles.‎ As a freshman in high school, Patti announced, "I'm going to run from Orange County up to San Francisco."(A distance of 400 miles.) "As a sophomore (二年级学生), "she went on, "I'm going to run to Portland, Oregon. "(Over 1, 500-miles.)"As a junior, I'll run to St. Louis. "(About 2, 000 miles.)"As a senior, I'll run to the White House. "(More than 3, 000 miles away.)‎ In view of her handicap(缺陷), Patti was as ambitious as she was enthusiastic, but she said she looked at the handicap of being an epileptic as simply"an inconvenience. "She focused not on what she had lost, but on what she had left.‎ That year she completed her run to San Francisco wearing a T-shirt that read,"I Love Epileptics. "In her sophomore year, Patti's classmates got behind her. They built a large poster that read — "Run, Patti, Run! " ‎ On her second marathon(马拉松),a doctor told her she had to stop."Doctor, you don't understand, "she said. "I'm doing it to break the chains on the brains that limit so many others." ‎ She finished the run to Portland, completing her last mile with the governor of Oregon. After four months of almost continuous running from the West Coast to the East Coast, Patti arrived in Washington and shook the hand of the then President of the United States. She told him, "I wanted people to know that epileptics are normal human beings with normal lives."‎ Because of Patti's efforts, enough money had been raised to open up 19 multi-million-dollar epileptic centers around the country. But there has been nothing silly about the creepy clowns that seem to be appearing in various parts of America since this summer. The situation has become so ridiculous that police departments and schools are appealing to the public and students to stop dressing up as evil(邪恶的)clowns to scare people.‎ The fear of clowns is not a joke. Many find that the painted face, funny clothes and other clown-like behavior actually scares them. Bullies(恶霸)are putting this unreasonable fear to use and clowning seems to have become a new way to scare people. .‎ Recently, an 11-year-old boy was pulled up in California. He admitted that he scared fellow students with pictures of scary clowns. In other examples, there have been reports of people ‎ dressed as clowns trying to lure(引诱)children to unsafe places.‎ Clowning seems to have become popular among school bullies as a new form of expression. To protect and keep students safe, many schools have now banned clown costumes in schools and especially for Halloween. While this is a good thing, the consequence of such a ban has had bad effects on the folks who have made a living clowning all their lives!‎ Professional clowns have been upset by the threat to their jobs. Think about it, is it fair to the real clowns that their profession is being looked at with suspicion(怀疑),when all they try to do is make us laugh with light-hearted silly acts? An organization to protect clowns called "Clown Lives Matter" tries to address the worries and threats to the livelihood of clowns. They want us to know that clowns are not just a painted face, they are people too!‎ ‎28. What does the underlined word "creepy" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?‎ A. Frightening. B. Amusing.‎ C. Strange. D. Silly ‎29. What did the 11-year-old boy do?‎ A. He put children in danger.‎ B. He threatened others with clown pictures.‎ C. He played tricks on some clowns.‎ D. He dressed as an evil clown.‎ ‎30. What measure has been taken by many schools?‎ A. Asking the police for help.‎ B. Cancelling Halloween activities at school.‎ C. Forbidding students to dress as clowns.‎ D. Banning students from seeing clown performances. ‎ ‎31. What would be the best title for the text? ‎ A. Bullying in schools ‎ B. How to overcome a fear of clowns ‎ C. Why are creepy clowns scaring America?‎ D. Clowning, a new form of bullying D How did we survive before the Internet? Finding the answer to almost any question is now just a matter of typing the question into a search engine and then looking at the results. Although we still have to make sure the source is reliable and check that different sources are giving us the same answer, it has never been easier to find information.‎ One of the side effects of this has been the rise of plagiarism(剽窃)in schools and universities. According to the Macmillan online dictionary, plagiarism is 'the process of taking another person's work, ideas or words, and using them as if they were your own'. If I had used this quote without mentioning the source and adding quotation marks then I would be guilty of plagiarism.‎ If you use the Internet then you'll know how easy it is to highlight a piece of text, copy it and then paste(粘贴)it into a document on your computer. It's a useful tool when we are copying something for personal use such as a food recipe(食谱). But it's a different story when we are preparing a piece of work that will be marked and judged as our own by a teacher or examiner. ‎ Imagine how attractive it must be for a student looking for the answer to a complex question to find the answer online and copy and paste it into their document without giving recognition to the ‎ original author. Apart from copying and pasting large parts of text, it's also possible to buy ready-made essays(文章)on the Internet, encouraging students to get someone else to do their work for them. It's a problem facing many schools and universities today.‎ In an effort to address the problem, many schools now use computer software designed to detect plagiarism. Turnitin.com is one Internet service that compares students' work with the material found online.‎ But I believe that Internet plagiarism is a problem that needs to be handled when students are as young as seven. If students are taught how to formally give recognition and supply sources then attitudes might change. Copying other people's words and pretending they are yours is a form of cheating and it's something children need to learn from a very early age.‎ ‎32. What does the author mainly explain in Paragraph 2?‎ A. Suggestions on quoting. B. The definition of plagiarism.‎ C. Ways‎ to prevent plagiarism. D. The bad effects of plagiarism.‎ ‎33. What is the author's attitude toward copying information for personal use? ‎ A. Acceptable. B. Doubtful. C. Cautious. D. Uncaring.‎ ‎34. What problem do universities face besides plagiarism? ‎ A. Students' choosing essay writing services.‎ B. Students' failure to graduate.‎ C. Students' cheating in exams.‎ D. Students' stealing others' research findings.‎ ‎35. What does the author suggest to deal with plagiarism?‎ A. Setting up strict rules.‎ B. Giving wrongdoers heavy punishment. ‎ C. Explaining cheating and plagiarism to students.‎ D. Giving students the right education from early childhood.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How to improve your studies — scientifically Our brain can possibly memorize 2. 5 petabytes(千兆)of information.
