They both grew up in very large families and lived through the Great Depression. Saving for a rainy day was their life philosophy. Rather than seeking fulfillment through material items, they chose to spend really simple life together with their family. Over the years my grandparents notice dramatic changes in their community. Every year more farmland was destroyed to build larger and larger homes. As real estate(地产) prices rose, many of their neighbors sold their little homes and land. Soon theirs was the only small house surrounded by a sea of mansions(漂亮的住宅). My grandparents built and lived in a small 600-square-foot cottage for most of their adult lives. Lots of family members encouraged my grandparents to expand their little old house. But they didn't want a bigger one. They loved their little house and were content with what they had. My grandparents avoided a consumptive(浪费的) lifestyle by painting and repairing the house themselves. They lived in a small home, but had a huge garden. They loved gardening and planting because it reduced their grocery bill, improved their health, and gave them an excuse to be outside. They also reused and recycled many things. For instance, they had driven the same car for over 15 years and didn't buy a new one until the old Chevrolet was worn out. From my grandparents, I learned an important lesson: it is possible to live a simple life. My grandparents taught me that living a simple life isn't about self-deprivation(自我牺牲). Instead , it's about giving yourself the time, freedom, and money to pursue your dreams. Becoming debt free, downsizing to a smaller home, and going out on foot instead of by car are good ways to take control of your life and start pursuing your dreams. 21. Which of the following is a consumptive lifestyle in the grandparents' opinion? A. Planting vegetables in the garden. B. Reusing and recycling things. C. Repairing the house themselves. D. Changing cars in a short time. 22 . The author's grandparents didn't expand their house because ______. A. they were satisfied with the house they lived in B. they didn't understand the family members' advice C. their house was really new and large enough D. they were too old to do any house-building job 23. The community’s changes include all the following EXCEPT that _______. A. many mansions were built there B. people built more farmland C. many neighbors sold their houses D. the houses became more expensive 24. Which can be the best title of this passage? A. How to Live Simply B. My Grandparents C. A Lesson from My Grandparents D. A Simple Lifestyle B Hello. I’m Jan from Mrs. Lake’s class. My class wants to work together to help the public. We think we have found a great way to do this. Last month we did a class project on the highways near our town. We learned about the Adopt-a-Highway Program. This program brings people together to pick up litter along the roads. We think it would be a great idea for all students in our school to join the program and adopt a highway. Adopting a highway is not like adopting a pet. When a highway is adopted, only part of the highway is cared for by a group of people. The group agrees to work every week to keep its part of the highway clean. Each group gets its own sign that has the name of the group printed on it. The sign is put up at the side of the road. This sign lets drivers know who is keeping that area of the road clean. The Adopt-a-Highway Program is a great way for people to help their environment look nicer. Also, the government does not have to send out as many road workers. This saves money. Finally, people may try harder to keep roads clean if they see people, especially teenagers like us, cleaning them up. We will need helpers to care for our adopted highway. If you want to feel great and keep our roads clean, please come with your parents to the meeting next week. We will meet in Mrs. Lake’ room on Wednesday at 6:00 P.M. At the meeting, we will talk about which roads are the dirtiest as a result of people's unkind acts. Then we' ll try to pick an area to adopt and clean. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Remember to keep our roads clean! 25. What is the Adopt-a-Highway Program about? A. Giving names to the highways. B. Picking up litter along the roads. C. Drawing pictures of highways. D. Putting up signs near the roads. 26. What should the students do first if they want to join the program? A. Go to a meeting on Wednesday. B. Call Mrs. Lake next week. C. Write a letter to their parents. D. Pick a spot to care for. 27. What is the purpose of this speech? A. To encourage students to join the program. B. To introduce the traffic system. C. To show drivers how to drive safely. D. To tell a story about adopting a pet. 28. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Adopt-a-Pet B. Volunteers on Roads C. Ways to Protect the Environment D. Adopt-a-Highway C Working women make up nearly half of the U.S. workforce, and 51 percent of professional workers, like doctors, lawyers, nurses and accountants, are female. While climbing the career ladder can be rewarding, it often comes with one big downside: weight gain! New research published this week in the International Journal of Obesity shows that working women are more likely to be overweight, and the more you work, the more pounds you’re likely to pile on. Like many women, I work... a lot! As a self-employed nutrition communications specialist, I sit at my desk, in front of a computer, for hours on end. Sitting alone is one of the worst things you can do for your health, and it’s directly linked to being overweight and increased fatness, so the fact that women in the workforce gain weight isn’t that surprising. If you work, you have less time to move around. Obesity(肥胖症)researchers are revealing many other ways that employment is harmful to your diet and waistline. In the International Journal of Obesity study, some 9,276 Australian women aged 45-50 had their body weight and employment status monitored for two years. Results? Those who worked more than 35 hours were likely to gain weight compared to those who worked fewer hours or were out of the workforce. What’s more, the more hours a woman worked in a week, the more weight she gained. The authors of the Australian study attribute weight gain among working women to inactivity, lack of time for food preparation, more use of prepared foods, high levels of stress, lack of sleep and consuming more alcohol. I’ll also add in travel, meals eaten out and working at night as other factors that I can find to make balancing work with a healthy diet a challenge. 29. The text above is probably taken from ______. A. a sports report B. a fashion journal C. a health and fitness magazine D. an advertisement post 30. A woman who works as an accountant is more likely to ______. A. gain more weight B. have more time to move around C. work a full time job D. keep a balanced diet 31. Which is NOT the cause of working women weight gaining according to the passage? A. Lacking time for food preparation. B. Using more prepared food. C. Consuming too much alcohol. D. Taking part in more activities. 32. What can be a suitable title for the test? A. Less activity leads to fat. B. Ways of gaining weight. C. Effects of weight gaining. D. Working women more likely pile on pounds. D Grandparents Answer a Call As a third-generation native of Brownsville, Texas, Mildred Garza never planned to move away. Even when her daughter and son asked her to move to San Antonio to help with their children, she politely refused. Only after a year of friendly discussion did Ms. Garza finally say yes. That was four years ago. Today all three generations regard the move as a success, giving them a closer relationship than they would have had in separate cities. No statistics show the number of grandparents like Garza who are moving closer to the children and grandchildren. Yet there is evidence suggesting that the trend is growing. Even President Obama's mother-in-low, Marian Robinson, has agreed to leave Chicago and into the White House to help care for her granddaughters. According to a study grandparents.com, 83 percent of the people said Mrs. Robinson's decision will influence grandparents in the American family. Two-thirds believe more families will follow the example of Obama's family. "In the 1960s we were all a little wild and couldn't get away from home far enough or fast enough to prove we could do it on our own," says Christine Crosby, publisher of Grand, a magazine for grandparents. "We now realize how important family is and how important it is to be near them, especially when you're raising children." Moving is not for everyone. Almost every grandparent wants to be with his or her grandchildren and is willing to make sacrifices, but sometimes it is wiser to say no and visit frequently instead. Having your grandchildren far away is hard, especially knowing your adult child is struggling, but giving up the life you know may be harder. 33. Why was Garza's move a success? A. It strengthened her family ties. B. It improved her living conditions. C. It enabled her to make more friends. D. It helped her know more new places. 34. What was the reaction of the public to Mrs. Robinson's decision? A. 17% expressed their support for it. B. Few people responded sympathetically. C. 83% believed it had a bad influence. D. The majority thought it was a trend. 35. What did Crosby say about people in the 1960s? A. They were unsure of themselves. B. They were eager to raise more children. C. They wanted to live away from their parents. D. They had little respect for their grandparents. 第三部分 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从36~55每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡将该项涂黑。 All you will leave behind for the world to remember is your legacy(遗产), but what legacy will you leave?
