A friend had business dealings in the city of Reno, Nevada, and I was asked to accompany her on an overnight trip. While she conducted her business, I was aimlessly wandering down Virginia Street, heading into a most gloriously beautiful sunset. I had an urge to speak to someone on the street to share that beauty, but I couldn’t make eye contact with anyone. Quickly I slid into a department store and asked the lady behind the counter if she could come outside for just a minute. She 1ooked at me as though I were from some other planet and said, “Well…’’ Surprisingly, she followed me out. When she got outside I said to her, “Just look at that sunset! Nobody out here was looking at it and I just had to share it with someone.” For a few seconds we just 1ooked. Then I said, “God’s in his heaven and all’s right with the world.” I thanked her for coming out to see it and sharing the beauty. Four years later my situation had changed considerably. I had come to the end of a twenty-year marriage. I was alone and on my own for the first time in my life. One day, while my clothes were going around, I picked up a Unity Magazine and read an article about a woman who had been in similar circumstances. She had come to the end of a marriage, moved to a strange community, and the only job she could find was one she disliked: cosmetic sales in a department store. We had a lot in common. Then something happened to her that changed everything. She said a woman came into her department store and asked her to step outside to look at a sunset. The stranger had said, “God’s in his heaven and all’s right with the world.”, and she had realized the truth in that statement and that she simply had not been seeing it. From that moment on, she turned her life around. 24. Why did the writer slid into a department store? A. She found it boring with nobody talking to her. B. She wanted to buy something C. She wanted to speak to someone D. She wanted to share the sunset with others 25.What does the sentence “God’s in his heaven and all’s right with the world” mean? A. We should be optimistic when facing difficulties. B. We should believe in God because he is in the heaven. C. We should hold the belief that God can change our life. D. We should hold the belief that everything is right in the word.. 26.What do you think finally changed the writer’s attitude towards life? A. The old magazine she came across. B. The encouragement from the woman. C. The sunset they enjoyed four years ago. D. The woman’s story. 27.What may be the best title for the text? A. Depending on yourself B. Sharing beauty C. Struggling every day D. Never giving up halfway C There’s nothing like a good night’s sleep — but what does that really mean? It turns out that the answer depends not only on your age, but also on your lifestyle. Some people are productive and happy with fewer hours of sleep, while others need more. Still, experts can determine guidelines that work for most people. The National Sleep Foundation researched the topic and gave new recommendations this week. The foundation acknowledges that sleep needs will vary — lifestyle and stress should be taken into consideration — but their recommendations offer a general guideline. For example, teenagers (14 —17 years old) need 8—10 hours, sleep every day. To create the recomendations, some sleep and medical experts reviewed 312 articles from journals published during the last decade. This is the first time that any professional organization has developed age-specific recommended sleep durations based on a systematic review of the world scientific literature. A lack of sleep can be linked to weight gain, because that causes an increase in appetite, according to the foundation. It can also have serious consequences on the brain. People who do not get enough sleep are at increased risk for depression, and can endanger others. Those that become sleepy while driving, for example, risk both their lives and the lives of those around them. Researchers also have found in the past that too much sleep can have negative effects. Low socioeconomic status and depression reportedly are significantly associated with longer sleep. However, experts nowadays find that research on oversleeping is still unconvincing and needs more attention. Currently, there is no strong evidence that sleeping too much has health consequences. There is, however, laboratory evidence that short sleep durations of four to five hours have negative consequences. We need similar laboratory studies to determine whether long sleep durations result in physiological changes that could lead to disease before we make any recommendations against sleep extension. 28. Which is TRUE about sleeping time? A. The time you need for sleep is related to your state of mind. B. Experts’ guideline for sleeping time applies to all the people. C. The less you sleep, the more productive you are. D. The more you sleep, the more energetic you are. 29. How did the National Sleeping Foundation do the research? A. By interviewing different people. B. By reading lots of articles. C. By consulting other experts. D. By doing systematic experiments. 30. The research shows that people without enough sleep will _______. A. lose some weight B. eat more food C. dream during their sleep D. drive faster than usual 31. From Paragraph 4, we can learn that _______. A. too much sleep may result in social changes B. researchers now agree with those in the past C. more research on oversleeping is needed D. research on oversleeping is quite convincing D A fun-filled day at the beach turned into horror for Alex Sun and his four-year-old son, John. The two were happily playing at Discovery Bay's main beach when Mr. Sun saw something sticking out of the sand next to John's foot. He stopped his son just as the boy was about to step on a 3.5cm long needle. "John was barefoot. Think about what might have happened if he had stepped on that needle," said Mr. Sun. "It's a terrible thing to imagine." The Suns' experience shows how serious the pollution problem on the beach is. "Discovery Bay has always been one of my favorite beaches," says Mr. Sun, "but now I'll think carefully before letting my child play here again. He will surely have to put on shoes in the future, and I won't take him into the water. This used to be such a beautiful place. The water was clean and blue with no pollution at all. Now there is garbage everywhere. If nothing is done, a family day at the beach could be a thing of the past." Stephen Chan, a member of a team that has been set up to study the pollution situation there, says, "Medical waste can never be controlled completely. We already know that it is not coming from government hospitals and clinics so we are checking to see if it is coming from private doctors. One of our problems is that there are no laws to help us deal with the people responsible for this pollution." "If there were stricter laws, people might think twice about throwing garbage into sea," says Maggie Tang of Friends of the Earth. Mr. Chan, however, thinks that stricter laws alone will not solve the problem. "We cannot keep an eye on every inch of the coastline," he says. "There will always be people who throw dangerous garbage. I believe it is mainly a matter of education. If people would accept responsibility for what they do with their garbage, we would be much closer to a solution." 32. Which is TRUE according to paragraph 1 ? A. Alex Sun and John had a good time on the beach. B. Mr. Sun prevented his son stepping on a needle. C. John stopped to step on a needle. D. John must have stepped on a needle. 33. What does Mr. Sun think of the beach now? A. Unpopular. B. Unsafe. C. Deserted. D. Crowded. 34. According to Stephen Chan, what is the best way to solve the problem at the beach? A. Improve technology to get rid of garbage. B. Hire cleaners to collect dangerous garbage. C. Make laws that punish people polluting the environment. D. Educate people the dangers of polluting the environment. 35.What may be the best title for the text? A. A Terrible Surprise at the Beach B. A fun-filled day at the beach C. Environment Pollution. D. Environmental Protection. 第二节(七选五) (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) Healthy eating begins with learning how to eat smart---it’s not just what you eat, but how you eat. The skies are dark and cloudy. (Text 2) M: Lucy is going back to China next month, Alice. W: Oh, really? M: And she will not meet Richer this time. (Text 3) W: I hate to say it. But Jacky isn’t doing well in the film. M: Well. I think he’s only playing a different type of role. My sister thinks he is still the best. (Text 4) M: Professor Miners, could I talk to you about my paper? W: Sure. Come to my office between two to three. It’s Room 340. (Text 5) W: OK. Time to go home. M: I can’t. I haven’t finished the report about the newly opened restaurant. W: Well. If you carry on working like that, you’ll make yourself ill. (Text 6) M: I haven’t seen you for a long time. Where have you been? W: I went to New York to visit my sister and stayed there for two months. Actually, I really went to meet my new nephew. M: That’s great! How old is he? W: Well. He was five months old when I got there. And he could possibly be the most beautiful baby I have ever seen. M: What did you do in your sister’s home? W: I helped the baby and played with him a lot, which was nice. But what I enjoyed most was feeding him. (Text 7) M: Air pollution is so bad in this city. I think the government should stop people from driving cars on certain days. W: You have a point. Air pollution is a problem. But not letting people drive on certain days is a bad idea. People have to go to work by car. M: I’m afraid I don’t agree with you there. Reducing air pollution is really important. People are so used to driving that they don’t think about ways to do things. If we stop them from driving on certain days, maybe they could think of new ways to get around. W: I see your point. But I still think it wouldn’t be possible to stop people from driving. (Text 8) M: Let’s go and have lunch together. W: OK! M: By the way, I’m thinking of going to New Zealand around Christmas for three weeks. It’s such a beautiful country. I’ve never been there before. W: Have you booked the flight? M: Not yet. I’m planning to book my flight in two weeks’ time W: Book your flight right now. M: Why? W: Because the longer you leave it, the more expensive it will be. As a matter of fact, the prices may double at Christmas time. New Zealanders usually go home for Christmas. M: Then I’m going to book my flight tomorrow morning. (Text 9) M: Hello! W: Hello, Mike! This is Jane. M: Oh. Hello, Jane! W: Listen, Mike! I’ve got a real problem. M: What is it? W: The car’s broken down. M: Oh, not again. W: Yeah. I checked the oil and I checked almost everything. It’s just not starting at all. M: You have to get rid of it, you know. W:I know ,Iknow. But look, the thing is, I’ve got to pick Tom up at the airport. Can I……? M: Use my car? Yes, of course. W: That’ll be great! It’s very kind of you. M: Come on when you like. I don’t need it till tonight. W: OK! I’ll be around in about an hour. Thanks a lot! M: It’s all right. See you then! W: See you! (Text 10) W: OK! When we met last week, we talked about different kinds of short stories and some well-known short story writers. I remember that many of you said you liked the American writer Earnest Hemingway, right? I hope you all followed my advice and finished reading his story “ A day’s wait”, because as I said, we’re going to study it together in today’s lesson. Now since you’re supposed to have read this story, let’s have some discussion. Please look at the four questions on the blackboard. First, when and where does the story take place? Second, what does the boy read for in the story and what kind of person does he show himself to be? Third, what kind of person is the boy’s father? Four, what is the writer’s main purpose of writing the story? I’d like you to work in groups of four or five and present your answers in ten minutes. Is everything clear? 查看更多
