My tooth was aching, and I’d been in an argument with a friend. Her words still hurt: “The trouble with you is that you won’t put yourself in my place. Can’t you see things from my point of view?” I shook my head stubbornly—and felt the ache in my tooth. I’d thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really unbearable. I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. Finally, at about lunchtime, I got lucky. “If you come by right now,” the receptionist said, “the dentist will fit you in.” I took my purse and keys and rushed to my car. But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so eager to treat someone at such short notice? Why wasn’t he as busy as the others? In the dentist’s office, I sat down and looked around. I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my ice-cold one. When I told her my fears, she laughed and said,“Don’t worry. The dentist is very good.” “How long do I have to wait for him?” I asked impatiently. “Come on, he is coming. Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork,” the assistant said. “The artwork?” I was puzzled. The chair went back, suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it: on the ceiling. How considerate the dentist was! At that moment, I began to understand what my friend meant by her words. What a relief! 21. Which of the following best describes the author’s feeling that morning? A. Cheerful. B. Nervous. C. Satisfied. D. Upset. 22. Why did the author suddenly smile? A. Because the dentist came at last. B. Because she saw a picture on the ceiling. C. Because she could relax in the chair. D. Because the assistant kept comforting her. 23. What did the author learn from her experience most probably? A. Strike while the iron is hot. B. Have a good word for one’s friend. C. Put oneself in other’s shoes. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed. B It was a simple letter asking for a place to study at Scotland’s oldest university which helped start a revolution in higher education. A 140-year-old letter written by a lady calling for her to be allowed to study medicine at St Andrews University has been discovered by researchers. Written by Sophia Jex-Blake in 1873, the seven-page document, which urged the university to allow women to study medicine at the institution, was released yesterday on International Women’s Day. The document was discovered buried in the university archives (档案) by part-time history student Lis Smith, who is completing her PhD at St Andrews Institute of Scottish Historical Research. She said: “We knew that Sophia Jex-Blake and her supporters, in their effort to open up university medical education for women, had written to the Senatus Academicus (校评议委员会) at St Andrews in an attempt to gain permission to attend classes there, but we didn’t know documentary evidence existed. While searching the archives for information about the university’s higher certificate for women, I was astonished to come across what must be the very letter Jex-Blake wrote.” In the letter, Sophia and her supporters offered to hire teachers or build suitable buildings for a medical school and to arrange for lectures to be delivered in the subjects not already covered at St Andrews. Although her letter was not successful, it eventually led to the establishment of the Ladies Literate in Arts at St Andrews, a distance-learning degree for women. The qualification, which ran from 1877 until the 1930s, gave women access to university education in the days before they were admitted as students. It was so popular that it survived long after women were admitted as full students to St Andrews in 1892. Ms Jex-Blake went on to help establish the London School of Medicine for Women in 1874. She was accepted by the University of Berne, where she was awarded a medical degree in January 1877. Eventually, she moved back to Edinburgh and opened her own practice. 24. Sophia wrote a letter to St Andrews University because she wanted _______. A. to carry out a research project there B. to set up a medical institute there C. to study medicine there D. to deliver lectures there 25. Lis Smith found Sophia’s letter to St Andrews University _______. A. by pure chance B. in the school office C. with her supporters’ help D. while reading history books 26. Sophia’s letter resulted in the establishment of _______. A. the London School of Medicine for Women B. a degree programme for women C. a system of medical education D. the University of Berne 27. When did St Andrews University begin to take full-time women students? A. In 1873. B. In 1874. C. In 1877. D. In 1892. C We’ve reached a strange—some would say unusual —point. While fighting world hunger continues to be the matter of vital importance according to a recent report from the World Health Organization(WHO), more people now die from being overweight, or say, from being extremely fat, than from being underweight. It’s the good life that’s more likely to kill us these days. Worse, nearly l8 million children under the age of five around the world are estimated to be overweight. What’s going on? We really don’t have many excuses for our weight problems. The dangers of the problem have been drilled into us by publichealth campaigns since 2001 and the message is getting through—up to a point. In the 1970s,Finland,for example, had the highest rate of heart disease in the world and being overweight was its main cause. Not any more.A publichealth campaign has greatly reduced the number of heart disease deaths by 80 per cent over the past three decades. Maybe that explains why the percentage of people in Finland taking diet pills doubled between 2001 and 2005,and doctors even offer surgery of removing fat inside and change the shape of the body. That has become a sort of fashion. No wonder it ranks as the world’s most bodyconscious country. We know what we should be doing to lose weight—but actually doing it is another matter.By far the most popular excuse is not taking enough exercise.More than half of us admit we lack willpower. Others blame good food. They say:it’s just too inviting and it makes them overeat.Still others lay the blame on the Americans, complaining that pounds have piled on thanks to eating too much Americanstyle fast food. Some also blame their parents-their genes. But unfortunately, the parents are wronged because they’re normal in shape,or rather slim. It’s a similar story around the world, although people are relatively unlikely to have tried to lose weight.Parents are eager to see their kids shape up.Do as I say-not as I do. 28. What is the“strange”point mentioned in the first sentence? A. The good life is a greater risk than the bad life. B. Starvation is taking more people’s lives in the world. C. WHO report shows people’s unawareness of food safety. D. Overweight issue remains unresolved despite WHO’s efforts. 29. Why does the author think that people have no excuse for being overweight? A. A lot of effective diet pills are available. B. Body image has nothing to do with good food. C. They have been made fully aware of its dangers. D. There are too many overweight people in the world. 30. The example of Finland is used to illustrate________. A. the cause of heart disease B. the fashion of body shaping C. the effectiveness of a campaign D. the history of a bodyconscious country 31. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Actions or Excuses? B. Overweight or Underweight? C. WHO in a Dilemma D. No Longer Dying of Hunger D The Diet Zone: A dangerous Place Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet... We are surrounded by the word “diet” everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically . Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brains to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food labels. On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don't have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle. The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients . Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are potentially dangerous. Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological and physical harm that comes from using them. 32. From Paragraph 1,we learn that ____ A. diet products fail to bring out people’s potential B. people have difficulty in choosing diet products C. diet products are misleading people D. people are fed up with diet products 33. In Paragraph 3, " gain comes without pain" probably means____. A. losing weight is effortless B. it costs a lot to lose weight C. diet products bring no pain D. diet products are free from calories 34. Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products____. A. are over-consumed B. lack basic nutrients C. are short of chemicals D. provide too much energy 35. There’s fine line between laughing hard at something and laughing inappropriately, which will make you look like you’re five 39 Once you stop, fiddle with your backpack strap or locker to keep from laughing again. If you have trouble finding the fine line of laughter, take the safe approach and not laugh at all. 40 Don’t do stupid things to get attention, because it’s really annoying. Today I’d like to tell you some New Year’s traditions around the world. Many cultures have traditions meant to scare off bad luck when celebrating the New Year. This often involves using fireworks, like in my hometown Beijing. But there are other ways people do it, too. In Scotland, for example, people hold bonfire celebrations. And men from villages walk through the streets with giant blazing fireballs over their heads. These fireballs represent the sun and they are supposed to clean the coming year. In Panama, people use bonfires to burn pictures of popular celebrities and political figures. These pictures represent the old year. Burning them brings a fresh start for the New Year. Of course, some traditions meant to avoid bad luck do not involve fire at all. For example, just before the New Year, people in Denmark find the highest surface they can and jump from it as the New Year starts. This is so they can jump into January! The hope is that they leave behind the bad spirits and bad luck of the previous and enter a New Year full of promise and new beginning查看更多
