He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly, so he sent them each to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.      The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, the third in the summer, and the youngest son in the fall. When they had all come back, he called them together to describe what they had seen. The first son said that the tree was ugly and grey. The second son said no —it was covered with green leaves and full of promise. The third son disagreed. He said the tree was covered with flowers that smelled sweet and looked beautiful. The last son disagreed with all of them. He said the tree was ripe and drooping (低垂) with fruit.      The man then explained to his sons that they were all right, because they each had seen just one season in the tree’s life. He told them, "You can not judge a tree or a person by only one season. The essence (本质) of who they are —the pleasure, joy, and love that come from that life —can only be judged in the end, when all the seasons have passed. So never lose heart in times of difficulty."      If you give up when it’s winter, you will miss the promise of spring, the beauty of summer and the harvest of fall. More than ten thousand students and more than five hundred robots took part in the competition. Almost 1,700 high school teams took part in the competition called LUNACY.      In January, the organization sent the same robots to each team. The teams had six weeks to build robots that could compete in the LUNACY game. The playing area consisted of six robots, three on each team. Each robot had a trailer (拖车) connected to it. The robots had to pick up large balls and throw them into the trailers of opposing (对手的) robots. The robots were moving on a platform where they could move smoothly. A team from the USA won the LUNACY competition.      American inventor Dean Kamen started the competition in 1989 to increase young people’s interest in science and technology. The organization holds robotic competitions around the world. It offers programs that help young people learn about science, technology, engineering and maths, and at the same time build life skills. Many companies provide support for the organization.      Mr. Kamen says the goal is more than building robots. In fact, their memories last up to four or five months, according to scientists in Israel. They say their research proves that the common belief that fish can remember things for only three seconds, is not true.      The scientists from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa trained a group of fish to respond to a sound. They would come to the same place for food whenever they heard it, and could remember what to do for a period of four to five months. In other words, your goldfish should have no difficulty recognizing the castle or diver it sees every day in its bowl.      "The research is against the idea that fish have a memory span (持续时间) of only three seconds, and shows that it actually lasts 4 to 5 months," says a spokesman for the project. "Based on this, researchers are developing new ways to raise fish in coastal areas by training them to respond to sounds."      So far, fish have been raised in the sea in cages placed in sheltered coastal areas. The method is controversial (有争议的) because of the pollution caused by chemicals the fish release.      It’s hoped the research will lead to a new farming technique, with which fish would be called back to be caught when they reach market size. Researcher Boaz Zion says, "The method has many advantages. It means the fish would grow in the natural environment. Cages wouldn’t be needed, and there would be no pollution." ‎ ‎     "Feeding would be also cheaper, and base mainly on the food found naturally where the fish live."‎ ‎66. However, some smokers may have to seek help from medication (药物治疗) in order to kick the habit.      What medication actually does is to reduce the wish to smoke. Some of the medication must be taken with a doctor’s guidance. The five most common medications to stop smoking are Bupropion SR, nicotine gum, nicotine inhalers, nicotine nasal spray and nicotine patches. People can buy nicotine gum and nicotine patches in chemists. However, the other medications require a prescription.      Zyban tablets(药片)have been found to be highly effective in curing people of smoking addiction. The tablet needs to be taken whole, without crushing (碾碎)it, as crushing can lead to side effects. It can be bought on the prescription of a doctor.      Nicotine patches are filled with nicotine and they are applied to the skin. The skin takes in the nicotine and carries it to the blood stream. The amount of nicotine in these patches is quite limited, not enough to lead to addiction. But you shouldn’t take them for dinner. In fact, millions of people have benefited from these nicotine patches.      Nicotine gum is supposed to be a safer choice. It is used in such a way that it comes into contact with the blood vessels (脉管) in the mouth and then releases the nicotine. The nicotine should not go through the stomach; otherwise, it may cause certain side effects.      These different types of medications have to be taken quite carefully. Here, I want to say something about smoking. As we know, smoking is bad for health. It does harm not only to smokers but also to people around ‎ them. Smoking causes many diseases. What’s worse, small as cigarettes are, they can lead to big fires. As far as I’m concerned, smoking is a waste of money, because people have to spend money treating illnesses caused by smoking as well as buying cigarettes. So in order to keep healthy, please keep away from the bad habit of smoking. That’s all. Thank you! ‎
