Trust us, and your brain will thank you. Not only does reading increase the amount of daily pleasure in your life, but it could also delay dementia (痴呆) and even help you live longer.‎ But still, picking the perfect novel isn't easy. Thankfully, Business Insider asked a Harvard professor to recommend the one book he thinks every student should read in 2019—and we suggest adding it to your list, too. (No time for all the books on your list? Here's a shortcut: Read the endings to some of the world's most famous books, instead.)‎ Steven Pinker, Professor of Psychology at Harvard, recommends The Internationalists by legal scholars Hathaway and Shapiro. The book makes a surprising statement that the Kellogg-Briand Paris Peace Pact (条约) of 1928, which declared war illegal, has caused a steady drop in war throughout history.‎ ‎“But in their fascinating and evidence-rich book, they make a lifelike case,” Pinker said. “And like The Clash of Civilizations and The End of History, the book presents a sweeping vision (视野) of the international scene, making sense of many developments in the news and recent history.”‎ So, go ahead and give (at least) one of these books a read in 2019! And while you're at it, you should add the following 20 books you really should have read by now to your list, too…‎ ‎21.Which has the closest meaning to the underlined word “shortcut” in the 2nd paragraph?‎ A.A time-saving way to read books.‎ B.A lazy person's way to read books.‎ C.A quick way to know about endings of books.‎ D.A wise way to deal with too many books to read.‎ ‎22.What or who has reduced the number of wars throughout history?‎ A.The Paris Peace Pact. B.The Internationalists.‎ C.Hathaway and Shapiro. D.A wide vision of the international scene.‎ ‎23.What may be written in the next or last paragraph of the passage?‎ A.More advice on reading books.‎ B.The names of the 20 books recommended.‎ C.The main contents of the 20 books recommended.‎ D.The brief introduction of the 20 books recommended.‎ B As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.‎ In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.‎ In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). But when people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)”‎ According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.‎ ‎24.The passage begins with two questions to ________.‎ A.introduce the main topic B.show the author’s attitude C.describe how to use the Internet D.explain how to store information ‎25.What can we learn about the first experiment?‎ A.Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.‎ B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.‎ C.The first group did not try to remember the formation.‎ D.The second group did not understand the information.‎ ‎26.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research?‎ A.We are using memory differently.‎ B.We are becoming more intelligent.‎ C.We have poorer memories than before.‎ D.We need a better way to access information.‎ C ‎ A British friend told me he couldn’t understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds(嗑瓜子) as a snack so much. “I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth; I believe that’s from cracking the seeds,” he said.‎ I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed.‎ When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door-to-door on Chinese New Year’s Eve to check out what every household was making.‎ I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. Out in the living room , a large table would already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth, ready-made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds. Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.‎ I don’t think it’s right to criticize one’s choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they may seem.‎ It’s not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins your breath. They think it’s a delicacy(美味佳肴), and it’s connected to their certain culture. I think it’s a wonderful tradition.‎ ‎27.What did the writer become aware of?‎ A.She had ever typed a report about seeds.‎ B.She had various snacks while watching TV.‎ C.She damaged her teeth by eating sunflower seeds.‎ D.She had a habit of cracking sunflower seeds.‎ ‎28.What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year?‎ A.The traditions of celebrating it disappear.‎ B.Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.‎ C.The families get together for it.‎ D.Children can eat delicious food on that day.‎ ‎29.The writer’s attitude to Denmark’s way of eating bread is _____.‎ A.neutral (中立的) B.critical (批评的) C.acceptable D.doubtful ‎30.What lesson can we learn from the story?‎ A.One kind of food doesn’t necessarily suit everyone.‎ B.It is good to form healthy eating habits.‎ C.Eating habits come from a certain culture.‎ D.Changing your eating habits will change your life.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ Little Habits Make a Big Difference Everything around us is changing at amazing speed, it seems ̶ but some things will always remain the same.31. Summary Writing Take Care of Your Spine (脊柱)‎ The spine stands at the center of your health, providing your body with structure and support. It also contains your spinal cord, a massive collection of nerves that sends electric signals from the rest of your body to your brain. Therefore, it’s important to take care of it.‎ Maintaining your good posture is one of the most important things you can do to keep your spine healthy. Proper posture means standing or sitting while keeping your spine straight, except for its natural curves. Posture comes into play even when you’re asleep. Sleeping on your side puts less stress on your spine than most other positions. Having a comfortable bed is also very important as sleeping in a position that isn’t comfortable can leave your back feeling sore the next day.‎ Exercise is also an important factor in the health of your spine. Staying still for too long—even if your posture is good—can be hard on your back. Especially if you work at a desk most of the day, it’s important to get up and stretch periodically. Stretches can help the muscles around your spine relax and allow bones to shift into better positions. Strength exercises with light weights or bodyweight exercises like pushups can also help by strengthening the muscles around your spine. However, don’t overdo the exercise, as repeated motions can hurt the muscles around your spine.‎ Your diet also affects the health of your spine because many vitamins are necessary for bones and nerves. In particular, B vitamins help keep nerves healthy, so you may want to consider taking a supplement (补充物). Another important factor is vitamin D, which is essential for strong bones, but it’s also absorbed from sunlight, so it may help to do some of those back exercises outside.‎ 永安三中2019-2020学年第二学期高二英语期中测试卷 听力 ‎1—5 CBCAB 6—‎10 ABCCB ‎11—‎15 CCBAB 16—‎20 CCAAB 阅读理解 ‎21-25:DABAC 26-30:ADBCC ‎31-35:ACGEF ‎ 完形填空 ‎36-40:DBBCA 41-45:CADAC ‎ ‎46-50:DBADD 51-55:CBADA ‎ 单词拼写 ‎56. declared 57. beneficial 58. reflected 59. witnessing 60. distribute 61. operating 62. relevant 63. govern 64. recommend ‎ ‎ 65. acknowledged 完成句子 ‎66. day in and day out 67. been aware of ‎ ‎68.
