Or this sentence: “BAE,‎ ‎ let me know if you stay in tonight.”‎ What on earth do they mean? Well, “totes” is a short form of “totally”. Similarly, “tradge” means “tragic” and “emosh” means “emotional”. It seems that, for millennials (千禧一代), typing in this form is not only timesaving but fashionable.‎ As you can see, many millennial slangs (俚语) are formed by socalled “totesing” — the systematic abbreviation (缩写) of words. The trend might have started with “totally” becoming “totes”, but it now has spread to many other English words.‎ The origins of other millennial slangs are more complex than “totesing”. “Bae”, for example, has been widely used by AfricanAmericans for years. It can be an expression of closeness with one’s romantic partner or, like “sweetheart”, for someone without romantic connection. After pop singer Pharrell used the word in his work, “bae” became mainstream.‎ Some people might think millennial slangs lower the value of the English language, but Melbourne University linguist (语言学家) Rosey Billington doesn’t agree. She says when people are able to use a language in a creative way, they show that they know the language rules well enough to use words differently. Two other linguists, Lauren Spradlin and Taylor Jones, share the same view. The two analysed hundreds of examples of totesspeak and discovered totesing has complex roots.‎ It isn’t simply an adult version of baby talk, nor a clever way to minimize your word count. Rather, it is a highly organized system that relies on a speaker’s mastery of English pronunciation. It is about sounds, follows sound system of English and has strict rules.‎ 语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。 ‎ ‎5.Why do young people like using eslangs?‎ A.They are timeconsuming. B.They are in fashion.‎ C.They are complex. D.They are in order.‎ 解析:选B 细节理解题。 B。‎ ‎6.What’s the author’s purpose of mentioning “Bae” in Paragraph 5?‎ A.To support that totesing is no baby talk.‎ B.To analyse the usage of millennial slangs.‎ C.To inform people how it became mainstream.‎ D.To explain the complex origins of millennial slangs.‎ 解析:选D 推理判断题。 D。‎ ‎7.Which statement may Rosey Billington agree with?‎ A.Totesing is a loosely organized system.‎ B.Millennial slangs lower the value of English.‎ C.It’s simply a clever way to reduce the word count.‎ D.Totesspeak requires a good command of English.‎ 解析:选D 推理判断题。 D。‎ ‎8.What’s the best title of the passage?‎ A.Eslangs Catch on Among Youth B.Linguists Disapprove of Totesing C.Millennial Slangs Take the Lead D.English Has Greatly Changed 解析:选A 标题归纳题。 A。‎ C ‎“There’s a mother in PICU (儿童重症监护病房) who wants to talk about a kit she received,” the nurse told me. “Something about it made her cry.”‎ I’ve been a childlife specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital since 2000. I help families understand diagnoses and treatment plans and manage the ups and downs that come with caring for a sick child. Tough talks with parents are part of the job, which still makes me feel nervous.‎ The kits the nurse was talking about were something I had recently introduced to the hospital: Comfort Kits from Guideposts. They were supposed to make a child’s experience here easier, not upsetting.‎ When I came across the kits at a conference, I fell in love with them. A treasure box of items designed not only to entertain kids, but to comfort and inspire them. There’s a coloring book, a stress ball, a CD of relaxing music, a hairy star named Sparkle, a journal and much more. I really believed these kits would help kids. I wished I hadn’t been mistaken.‎ At the patient’s room in PICU I saw a little girl, sleeping soundly surrounded by tubes and machines. My eyes met her mother’s. The kit was open on her lap and tears were running down her cheeks.‎ ‎“I’m Shannon. I manage the Child Life Department,” I said. “I’m sorry if the kit upset you. It’s a new item ...”‎ The mother shook her head. “This has been one of the worst days of my life. I felt so ‎ scared and alone. Then I was handed this box. I know it’s for my daughter, but it’s just the comfort I needed. I wanted to say thankyou.”‎ With that I knew Comfort Kits belonged here. We’ve been using them for almost three years now. Each child who’s admitted to the hospital receives one. Every day I see kids coloring, journaling, playing with Sparkle.‎ But as this mom showed me Comfort Kits aren’t just for kids. The hope they bring, which_can_be_in_short_supply_in_hospitals_sometimes,_is felt by the whole family.‎ 语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。 ‎ ‎9.The author introduced Comfort Kits to the hospital to ________.‎ A.relax nurses B.benefit sick kids C.comfort parents D.cure kids of diseases 解析:选B 细节理解题。 ‎ ‎10.Why was the girl’s mother crying?‎ A.She was moved to tears.‎ B.She felt alone and scared.‎ C.She couldn’t wake her kid.‎ D.She worried about her kid’s illness.‎ 解析:选A 推理判断题。根据倒数第三段的“I know it’s for my daughter, but it’s just the comfort I needed.” ‎ ‎11.The closest meaning to “which can be in short supply in hospitals sometimes” is ________.‎ A.kits are in great need in hospitals B.there may be lack of hope in hospitals C.parents are often in low spirits in hospitals D.medical supplies are not enough in hospitals 解析:选B 推理判断题。 ‎ ‎12.What’s the author’s attitude towards Comfort Kits?‎ A.Disappointed. B.Excited.‎ C.Nervous. D.Confident.‎ 解析:选D 观点态度题。根据第四段的最后两句“I really believed these kits would help kids. I wished I hadn’t been mistaken.”‎ 并结合最后一段的整体内容可推知,作者对Comfort Kits充满信心。‎ D Modern humans have a hard time controlling their desire to eat. Often you eat not because you are hungry, but because you are affected by many other things. How much you eat is strongly affected by how much those around you eat. People eating alone eat least. People eating with one other person eat 35 percent more than they do at home. People dining in a party of four eat 75 percent more. Eating with overweight friends? You’ll eat more. Is your waitress overweight? You’ll eat more. A wide variety of food? You’ll eat more.‎ Plates can decide how sweet dessert tastes. If people ate it off a paper plate, they’d say, “This is good.” If they ate it off a fancy silver plate, they would say, “This is the greatest cake I’ve eaten in my entire life.”‎ Your knowledge about what makes food good or bad also affects how much you eat. You tend to eat more when you think the food is good, and less when you think it is bad. So Grandma’s cookies always taste better than other cookies. “Good food” even has a “health halo (光环) effect”. If we’re eating something healthy, we feel that everything in that meal is healthy. Due to this, people often believe that a cheese cake with a salad has fewer calories (卡路里) than the cheese cake alone. That’s perhaps also why eating organic (有机的) food might turn you into an annoying guy. Your brain may use anything that makes you feel good about your own morality to excuse your immoral behaviour.‎ Food and hunger affect your judgment too. Hungry judges give more serious sentences. Kids who don’t eat breakfast behave worse than kids who eat their breakfast. People who have low blood sugar are more likely than the average person to have trouble concentrating and controlling their unpleasant emotions.‎ 语篇解读:本文是一篇科普说明文,主要介绍了哪些因素会导致人们吃得更多。‎ ‎13.What is mentioned as a cause of overeating?‎ A.Suffering from great loneliness.‎ B.Being served by a helpful waitress.‎ C.Being treated to high quality food.‎ D.Eating with many friends.‎ 解析:选D 细节理解题。 ‎ ‎14.According to the passage, an annoying person may be one who ________.‎ A.finds any excuse for eating more B.is crazy about the quality of plates C.competes with others in making cookies D.teaches people to stick to morality 解析:选A 推理判断题。根据第一段的内容和第三段中的“That’s perhaps also ...your immoral behaviour.” ‎ ‎15.What would be the best title for the passage?‎ A.When Can’t We Go on a Diet?‎ B.What Affects Eating?‎ C.How to Make Good Food D.Where to Find Safe Food 解析:选B 标题归纳题。 ‎ How to Avoid an Internet Addiction While it may seem like everyone surfs the web these days, there is a fine line between casually checking your social media pages and having a fullblown Internet addiction. If you fear that you may lose interest in other aspects of your life because you prefer to be on the Internet, you may be on your way to an Internet addiction. __16__‎ Admit you are at risk of an addiction.‎ More and more people in the world are becoming addicted to the Internet. You are not the only one with this problem, and it is becoming more and more common and more and more wellknown. __17__‎ Set aside limited time for computer use.‎ Make sure not to turn it on too many times a week. If you have a laptop, make sure to put it somewhere that you can remember but not somewhere that you see every day. Try keeping the lid closed when you are not using it. __18__ If you have a desktop PC, try not to go near it or put something over it like a sheet.‎ Call people instead of sending instant messages or texts.‎ If you are free on weekends, call friends and ask them to go outside. This will distract you from the computer. __19__‎ Use an alarm clock or timer.‎ Before using your computer, decide on a time limit such as 30 minutes. Set the clock or timer and make sure that you get off the computer when the time is up. Alternatively create a shutdown timer on your desktop. __20__‎ A.Make a small list of what you want to do within that time.‎ B.When the computer is not looking at you, you are less likely to use it.‎ C.This can be programmed to shut down your computer after the set time.‎ D.Luckily, there are ways to avoid living your life in front of the computer.‎ E.This will stop you from using the Internet so often or going on to another page.‎ F.If you have a problem on weekdays, phone your friends or ask for help in person.‎ G.Do not be embarrassed; find others with the same problem and help each other beat it.‎ 语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。 ‎ ‎18.选B 根据空前的“Try keeping the lid closed when you are not using it.” ‎ ‎19.选F 本段的主题是“给朋友打电话而不是在网上发信息”,上文的call friends and ask them to go outside与F项中的phone your friends or ask for help in person,还有上文的“on weekends”与F项中的on weekdays前后呼应。‎ ‎20.选C 本段的主题是“Use an alarm clock or timer”,作者建议使用闹钟或定时器来限制上网的时间,空前的“shutdown timer”与C项中的“shut down your computer after the set time”相对应。‎
