I wasn’t sure if I should laugh or cry as I stood there holding the steaming cup for the second time. My son woke up crying, and it took nearly an hour of singing and rocking to get him back to sleep. During this time, my coffee got cold. So, I heated it up. I grew up vowing(发誓) never to be like my mom. She is a wonderful woman, but no one in town seemed to know her name. To the teachers and students at the schools her children attended, she was simply known as mom. And other people in town addressed her as Mrs. Keffer, Dad’s last name. Mom’s answer to all of this was always a smile and some kind words. As a teen, I never understood my mom. How could someone with so much to offer the world be content to stay home and be known as an adjunct(附属) to her husband or as someone’s mom? Why wasn’t she proud of who she was? All I knew was that this was not going to happen to me. I had big dreams of making a difference in the world. People would know me. I would not be like my mom----I would be me. And people would know me as someone important. Now I understand. I understood eight months ago as I held my son for the first time. I understood when his tiny hand wrapped(缠绕) around my finger and his big blue eyes looked into mine. I understood when the love I have for my husband tripled(增至三倍) as I first saw the little body. I look forward to the day that I will be known as Andrew’s mom to the people in town and the children at school. I am proud to be Mrs. Frank Huff. Just like my mom is proud to be called Mrs. Dale Keffer. 21. Why did the author need to heat up her coffee? A. Because the weather was very cold and the coffee got cold quickly. B. Because the author’s son wanted to drink it. C. Because the author spent almost an hour to get her son to sleep again. D. Because the coffee was cold from the very beginning. 22. Which word is the best word you can use in the blank in the second paragraph? A. someone’s B. my C. her D. anyone’s 23. What did the author want to be when she was a teenager? A. a person like her mom B. a person who was important and got known by many people C. a person who loved her husband and kids D. a person who had big dreams 24. Who is Mrs. Frank Huff? A. the author’s mom B. the author’s sister C. the author herself D. Andrew’s teacher B Not many people have the chance of being a pioneer and experiencing a real-life adventure. But those who will go to live in this new undersea city will be able to do just that. There will be no suffering here. In fact it is so comfortable that it has been described as “a silk adventure”. Among its many advantages we include: easy contact(接触) with the land surface, more personal space , complete personal security and no housework worries. There has been a problem in the past when companies tried to design undersea cities. The sea bottom is deep and this makes it difficult to contact the surface. This difficulty has been solved by shuttle-submarines(潜水艇), which will always be ready to take people to the surface. They will be equipped with a special small, computerized machine. All the family will be transported quickly and safely to their destination. Personal space is important for healthy living. But getting enough of it has been a problem ever since the population grew too large for the available land. This, too, was an important principle behind the design of Saturation City. Everyone will get twice as much personal space as in flats on land. You will be able to explore the sea-floor and float among the fish and other sea animals, learn about the undersea world and enjoy picnics on the coral reefs. Our organization will look after the security of all the families in Saturation City. We will check everybody who enters or leaves the city. There will also be computers throughout the city which will be able to ”sense” if an object is removed from any house without permission. Only the robot cleaner will be able to move objects. This new piece of equipment will certainly make your life more enjoyable. Of course there will be no household worries in Saturation City. Each new well-furnished house comes with its own robot for family use only. Your details will be fed into its computer hard-drive so that it will only answer your family’s commands. So a spotless house is yours as soon as you move in. We hope that this information is enough for you to decide to see our super top-of-the-range apartments and houses. They all come with the special items mentioned above. We hope to see you at one of our many inspection visits. 25. What does the underlined part “ a silk adventure” in paragraph one possibly mean? A. a dangerous risk B. a comfortable activity without any danger C. a common experience D. an adventure with lots of sufferings 26. Which of the following statements is false according to the passage? A. In spite of the shuttle-submarines, it is still hard for people to contact the surface from undersea cities. B. Personal space is not a problem now in undersea cities. C. People’s security is well looked after in undersea cities. D. There won’t be any worries about households in undersea cities. 27. What kind of article does the passage belong to? A. a news report B. a student’s composition C. a story D. an advertisement 28. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Future’s Life B. Human’s Dream C. Saturation City D. Sea Life C People who report news sometimes find themselves in the news. This is especially true for foreign correspondents, who risk their lives to bring us important stories from dangerous parts of the world. To learn more about the life of a foreign correspondent, we interviewed Tim Craig, who has covered the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. What draws you personally to dangerous places? Experiencing problems that still exist in the world; seeing the struggles and challenges that soldiers and police face in trying to keep an area peaceful, and how hard it is for people to live in areas where there is war; and gaining a better understanding of how people from different cultures and countries live. What do you like about your job? I like being able to talk to lots of different people about their problems and concerns. Sometimes the job can make you sad. You have to talk to kids who don’t get enough to eat, or to someone whose mother or father was killed. But then I get to try to help these people by writing about their lives and problems. Do you worry about your own safety? How do you deal with that? Yes, I do worry, but I try not to think about it all the time. In Pakistan, many places are still safe enough for me to travel to without having to worry a lot about being injured, killed or kidnapped(绑架). There are, however, some places where I have to think about my safety all the time. Generally, it’s best to travel with someone else so that we can help each other if something goes wrong. In dangerous places, I also try not to stay in one spot for too long. What are the most important qualities or skills a foreign correspondent needs? Being independent and able to quickly make decisions, being a good planner in order to reach places that may be hard to get to by car or plane, and being a good listener. 29. What is the purpose of the writer’s writing the first paragraph? A. to tell the main idea of the passage B. to lead in (导入) the following contents C. to introduce a reporter D. to tell us the importance of a reporter 30. What are the reasons why he goes to the places full of danger, according to Tim Craig? A. experiencing problems existing in the world B. seeing the struggles and challenges the soldiers and police face C. people’s hardships because of wars and a better understanding of different cultures D. All of the above 31. What can we infer, according to the passage? A. Everywhere in Pakistan is safe enough. B. People in Pakistan are friendly enough. C. In some places of Pakistan, safety is still a problem. D. Pakistan is full of terrorism (恐怖). D The expanded Panama Canal has opened, allowing the passage of bigger ships. A 158-foot-wide, 984-foot-long Chinese-owned container ship was the first commercial vessel (商船) to make the passage through the canal’s new locks. Panama expanded the canal because many newer ships that carry the world’s goods are too big to fit in the old canal. The new set of locks will allow much larger ships to move more quickly between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The original Panama Canal was completed in 1914, to provide a waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Before it was built, a boat traveling from New York to California had to go all the way around the tip of South America. The canal cut three weeks and 9,000 miles off that journey. The expansion cost more than $ 5 billion and took nearly 10 years to complete. The people in Panama were hopeful that the expanded canal would help the country’s economy. How can the canal help the country’s economy? Each vessel must pay Panama a fee to pass through the canal. That fee depends on the size of the ship, the type of the ship, and the number of passengers or the amount of goods onboard. Officials are hoping that more ships and much larger ships will pay the fees to use the canal. Some doubt the project will produce results soon. The amount of goods shipped from the U.S. East Coast toward Asia fell by more than 10% in 2015. The Suez Canal, in Egypt, has had to charge ships less in order to encourage traffic. Officials in Panama say the country is thinking long-term. They say that shipping will increase, and Panama will be ready. Even now, some 35 to 40 vessels per day use the canal. Since the U.S. handed over control of the canal in 1999, it has brought in about $10 billion for Panama, and is responsible for about 40% of the country’s economy every year. 32. Why did the Panama government expand the canal? A. Because it was too old B. Because Panama’s economy (经济) was much better than before C. Because the canal was too narrow for the big vessels to pass through D. Because the USA wanted it to do so 33. Which of the following is the wrong information about Panama Canal? A. Ships from New York to California had to travel around the tip of Africa. B. A Chinese vessel was the first one to pass through it after it was expanded. C. Its expansion cost more than $5 billion and took about 10 years to complete. D. It contributes a lot to Panama, responsible for about 40% of its economy. 34. How long is it since Panama Canal was firstly built? A. about 17years B. about 100 years C. about 200 years D. about 50 years 35. What can be a suitable title for the passage? A. Panama’s Economy B. The Importance of Panama Canal C. The History of Panama Canal D. The New Panama Canal 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to talk to your parents about climate change Most of us don’t have millions of dollars to go door –to –door to persuade people to care about climate change. 36 So let’s talk to them about climate change. Because if we can’t convince our parents to take action on climate, who can we convince? It might be a hard conversation. If you do accept this challenge, here are a few suggestions: Talk to them with love and respect. If you’ve ever used any poisonous terms(术语), please get rid of them from your vocabulary. 37 38 Bill Mckibben’s article in Rolling Stone is great and very readable. There’s no need to flood them with data. The most important thing for them to understand is that on our current path(道路) we may no longer have a climate that allows for secure societies with the lifetimes of today’s children. Once these unpleasant facts are laid out, make it clear that you aren’t blaming them for this. Your parents likely made all of their decisions with a strong sense of morality(道德) and social responsibility, and could only make those decisions based on the information they had at the time. 39 But now that you have provided this new information, talk about how it warns them, and all of us, to behave in new ways. 40 Talk to them about trying to avoid using or use less fossil fuels. But given the urgency and severity of the problem, also make it clear that this will not be enough. This is a challenge that requires us all to acts as citizens, not just as consumers. (2) But most of us do have parents. (3) Ask them to please care for both of them. (4) Otherwise(否则), you’re making everything worse. (5) Share a couple of informative(增长见闻的) articles on the topic.
