It might sound like science fiction, but professors at the University of Tokyo have taken the first steps toward making that a reality. The team recently introduced a human-shaped kitchen robot that can pour tea and other drinks into cups and serve them to guests. When teatime is over, the robot can also wash the dishes and put them away. In California, another interesting kitchen robot has been developed, called Readybot. It can pick up objects and either store them in cabinets (橱柜) or put them in the trash. It also carries a separate floor-cleaning robot that can operate by itself. Unlike the Japanese robot, Readybot just looks more like a large box with arms and wheels. Readybot was created by engineers and designers who established a club called the Readybot Challenge. They believe that in the future millions of robots will be needed in homes to perform ordinary household tasks. Readybot is just the first step in their plan to create a robot that can do jobs not only in kitchens but in other rooms of homes and in offices as well. Clearly there are technological difficulties to solve before robots can cook a complete dinner, and there are also many safety concerns (忧虑). Not everyone (especially parents) would be comfortable with the idea of robots in their house, manipulating hot pans and sharp knives. The European Commission recently funded(资助) a project to study these concerns. According to lead researcher Professor Chris Melhuish, “Enabling robots to work safely with humans is a key need for the future development of robotics.” 24.Compared with Readybot, the Japanese robot . A. is more popular B. performs more jobs C. moves more quickly D. looks more like a person 25.Readybot can now be used to_______. A. drive you around B. clean your kitchen C. prepare food for you D. work for office workers 26.The underlined word “manipulating” can best be replaced by . A. Inventing B. avoiding C. controlling D. making 27. In the last paragraph the author says that parents . A .have shown great interest in kitchen robots B. can’t wait to use kitchen robots in their homes. C. might think that kitchen robots could be dangerous. D. found out how to operate robots safely. C Books are typically written first, then narrated (朗读) for audio books. Until now, Audible, the largest company of audio books, has begun asking well-known writers to create works specifically for audio, instead of inviting people to narrate already existing print books. It’s a new chapter for the book industry. Audible now has about 30 totally new audio works in production. And it turns out that audio books, which have long been regarded as less important than e-books, have actually been doing quite well. They are a $1,000,000,000 industry, with more than 35,000 titles published in 2013 alone. What promotes that progress is not only an evolution of technology, but more importantly, the rise of the celebrity (名人) narrator. Narrators are key to the success of an audio book and these days, producers are signing on more and more celebrities. Celebrities’ narration is like a private performance to customers, who get a feeling of closeness in listening to their voices. Many of the customers buy audio books based on the narrator. They will listen to anything a specific actor or actress reads. That is why Audible is taking the risk of not producing print books at all but starting totally new audio works. There’s another reason why the company is expecting its risk-taking action to pay off: humans have been telling stories since the beginning of time. We are taking part in a little habit that goes back thousands and thousands of years—before the first mark was ever made on a stone. Long before writing, people were telling each other stories and the audio book goes all the way back to that tradition. As Peter Allen sang softly in the 1970s, everything old is new again. 28. The “new chapter” (Para. 1) refers to a time of ______. A. starting audio companies B. producing new audio works C. narrating print books for audio D. creating electronic books 29. What does Paragraph 2 tell about audio books? A. Their bright future B. Their difference from e-books C. Their great importance D. Their previous production 30. Customers like celebrities’ narration because ______. A. celebrities help them understand the stories B. celebrities have more attractive voices C. celebrities seem to be within their reach D. celebrities have better narrating skills 31. Audible believes its risk-taking action will be rewarding because ______. A. the action has lasted for a long time B. customers play an active role in the action C. the company has spent a lot on the action D. the action agrees with the story-telling tradition D According to the most recent count, more than 6,500 homeless people sleep on the street or in shelters in San Francisco, and there are only eight shower facilities(设施)specifically available to the homeless, and most of these have just one or two stalls(淋浴间)and aren’t open every day. Now San Francisco-based company Lava Mae, is trying to change that with a simple but smart idea—turning retired city buses into mobile showers for the homeless. The idea known as Lava Mae, is a response to the need of the homeless in the city. It all started two years ago when Sandoval got in a cab after a meeting in the SoMa district of San Francisco, where the homeless mainly lived. “My driver turned around and said, ‘Welcome to the land of broken dreams.” Then Sandoval awoke from her imagination and started to really look at the people around her. “A woman I passed was crying and saying that she would never be clean,” Sandoval said. She took what the woman said as a sign that she should focus on the problem of hygiene (卫生), one of the most pressing needs for the homeless. After doing some research, Sandoval hit on the idea of a mobile unit that could be equipped with shower facilities. According to the company’s founder Doniece Sandoval, every bus will be renewed and equipped with two separate private areas, each with a shower stall, sink, changing areas, toilet and bench. Sandoval says that if everyone sticks to a five-minute shower, a single Lava Mae bus could provide service for about 100 people during each 8-to-10-hour shift. The project has been several years in the making as it has not been easy to get officials to agree. In addition, it is also difficult to ask the bus company to donate buses. Now she has reached an agreement with a bus company, which will donate the buses being retired in the next four years. While Lava Mae is now focused on the city of San Francisco, there is no reason that the idea cannot be spread all over the world. 32 . The main idea of this passage is that . A. the homeless lived a comfortable life in San Francisco B. the bus company shows great support to Lava Mae C. Lava Mae creates shower service to help the homeless D. Sandoval made great achievements in her career 33. ________contributed to Sandoval’s idea of creating mobile shower service to help the homeless. A. The benefit of her company B. The requirement of the government C. The poor woman that she met in SoMa district D. The meeting she had in the SoMa district of San Francisco 34. What is TRUE about the project of Lava Mae? A. A single Lava Mae bus could provide service for 100 people at a time. B. The project has met a lot of difficulties. C. The officials strongly support the project. D. The idea of Lava Mae will not be spread all over the world. 35. What is the author’s attitude about Lava Mae’s development? A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D.
