A team of researchers finds that saving time can bring greater feelings of life satisfaction than simply buying more stuff. It’s safe to say that most of us regularly feel crunched for time(时间紧迫). So much so that we are experiencing what Ashley Whillans of the Harvard Business School, the lead author of the study, describes as a “time famine”. And like any famine, this lack of time takes its damage on our health. “When we feel like our to-do lists are longer than the hours that we have in the day to complete them, we can feel as if our life is gradually out of control, even has a bad effect on our personal well-being.” Well, if time is money, Whillans and her team wondered whether money that’s used to buy time could offer some relief. Like paying someone else to clean the house or deliver the groceries, the researchers asked more than 6,000 people from US, Canada, Denmark, and the Netherlands to rate their overall satisfaction with life, and to estimate how much money they lay out each month to outsource(外包)unenjoyable daily tasks or otherwise have some time to relax. And they found respondents who willingly exchange funds for free time also report feeling more satisfied—regardless of their income or how many hours they work each week. To follow up, the researchers conducted a smaller experiment in which they gave volunteers forty dollars to buy a little something for themselves. The same participants got another forty dollars that they were told to spend on something that would save them time. And again, buying time was more likely to elevate mood and reduce anxiety. 24. What is the finding of the recent study in paragraph 1? A. Money can’t buy happiness. B. Saving time has nothing to do with our satisfaction. C. It’s not buying something but saving time that can give us more happiness. D. Saving time is like time famine, which can lead to our health damage. 25. What is the benefit from paying others to do daily tasks? A. It could offer some relief which is related to satisfaction. B. It could cost a lot of money. C. It couldn’t settle the unenjoyable daily tasks. D. It depends on respondents’ income and working hours. 26. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. The participants have a preference for buying something for themselves. B. The smaller experiment will deeply influence people’s purchasing habits. C. Buying time was more likely to help people reduce anxiety. D. Buying time is extremely difficult for most people. 27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Money Can’t Buy Happiness B. Buying Time Brings More Happiness C. Time Famine D. Lack of Time Means Life Is out of Control C Our coverage this week starts with a tragedy at a small church in a small American community. About 30 miles outside of San Antonio, Texas, is a place named Sutherland Springs. Yesterday, during service at the First Baptist Church, police say a man entered the building and started shooting. A county sheriff(州长)says more than 20 people were killed, numerous others were injured, though we didn’t know the exact number when we produced today’s show. At least two medical facilities were treating victims of the shooting. There was a chase after the attack. The suspect apparently fled into a neighboring county where he also died. Officials were trying to find out if he took his own life or if he was killed by police, in addition to his motivation. Five days after a terroristic attack in New York City, there was a sign of resilience(恢复能力)yesterday when 50,000 runners were expected to hit the road in the TCS New York City Marathon. City and state officials had promised the event would be safe, following an attack on October 31st that killed eight people in the borough of Manhattan. That was the worst terrorist act in New York City since it was a target on September 11th, 2001. For Sunday’s race, the city lined the roadways with sand trucks and police vehicles to protect pedestrians. Two and a half million spectators were expected and of those who took on the 26-mile challenge, one said she couldn’t live her life afraid that something like a terrorist attack could happen. The threat couldn’t stop her from fulfilling her goal to run. Some other runners that CNN spoke to gave a similar message. 28. What can we learn from the tragedy of the shooting in a small American community? A. All medical facilities in the county treated victims of the shooting. B. A man entered the building and started shooting, causing less than 20 people’s death. C. The suspect apparently fled into a neighboring county and run away. D. The motivation of the suspect is unknown. 29. Which of the following is true about the passage? A. The TCS New York City Marathon was put off due to the terrorist attack. B. We did know the exact injury number about the shooting. C. The runner said she couldn’t live her life afraid of terrorist attack. D. The city lined the roadways with police vehicles to protect runners. 30. The underlined word “fulfilling” in the last paragraph is closet in meaning to “ ”. A. achieving B. competing C. accumulating D. suspecting 31. What is the marathon runners’ attitude towards the shooting? A. Indifferent. B. Negative. C. Positive. D. Uncaring. D Robots are common in today’s world. They manufacture cars, work in space, explore oceans, clean up oil spills and investigate dangerous environments. And now, scientists at the University of Manchester are using a robot as a laboratory partner. The researchers at the university created the robot in 2009 and named it Adam. Despite the name, Adam is not a humanoid robot. It is about the size of a car. Adam was built to do science and make discoveries. Ross King is the leader of the University of Manchester research team. He says the robot made a discovery about yeast(酵母), a kind of fungus(真菌)used in science as a model for human cells. Adam’s success as a scientist led to the creation of another robot scientist named Eve. Researchers developed Eve to design and test drugs for tropical and neglected diseases. These diseases kill and infect millions of people each year. Drug development is slow and costly. Experts say it can take more than 10 years and about $ 1 billion to discover and develop new medicines. Drug manufacturers are unlikely to get their investment money back. So the University of Manchester developed a low-cost test that shows whether or not a chemical is likely to be made into an effective medicine. Mr. King says that other drug testing methods were not very effective. Mr. King says that Eve is different because the robot learns as it tests different compounds. He says the robot is designed to ignore compounds that it thinks unlikely to be good. It will only test the compounds which have a good chance of working. Eve has discovered that a compound known to be effective against cancer might also be used to fight against malaria and other tropical diseases. Mr. King says he hopes to completely automate the drug testing process with robots like Eve to create and test new chemicals. But he says humans remain in control of the manufacturing process. 32. What can we know from the first three paragraphs? A. The functions of robots are limited in the laboratory. B. Despite the name, Adam is still a robot about the size of a car. C. Adam was built to investigate dangerous environments. D. Yeast is a kind of fungus used in science as a robot for human cells. 33. Why did the researchers have the thought of developing Eve? A. To accompany Adam. B. To design and test drugs for some specific diseases. C. To infect millions of people each year. D. To work in space and explore oceans for humans. 34. Why does Mr. King say Eve is different from other drug testing methods? A. It learns as it tests different compounds and ignores all compounds. B. It is a low-cost and effective robot. C. Drug manufacturers prefer it. D. It will only test the compounds which have a good chance of working. 35. Which of the following is true according to the last paragraph? A. Eve will be definitely created to test new chemicals. B. A medicine has been discovered to fight against some tropical diseases. C. There is no doubt that humans still take control of the manufacturing process. D. Automating the drug testing process with robots to test new chemicals is uncertain. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It cannot be avoided that one is required to do something for the first time.
