As with all symbols, these can bring about great positive aspects into our lives. By understanding their meanings, we conjure the desired aspect each symbol represents. Crane The Crane is legendary in China for being the prince of all feathered creatures on earth. Next to the Phoenix, the Crane is the most favored Chinese bird symbol. The Crane is the ancient symbol for longevity because of its long life span. In many legends, the spirits ride on cranes, which are also said to bear the souls of the departed to heaven. Goldfish This symbol means abundance of gold, making the Goldfish a popular symbol in the Chinese culture. One of the most popular New Year's images is a child holding a large goldfish and a flower which brings both wealth and harmony. A Goldfish embroidered on a bag or a shirt is a sure way to bring the energy of abundance into your life. Magpie This Chinese animal symbol translates into the bird of joy. It is believed that when the Magpie nests in your house, it brings much cause for celebration and many happy occasions. Those wishing to settle down will do well to have this symbol in their lives, as it attracts the nesting, settling energies into our lives. Additionally, the Magpie is a powerful symbol to attract the joy associated with marriage and children. Rooster An image of a Rooster conveys a wish for advancement because the Roosters crest is a play on words official in Chinese. More importantly, legend has it that the Heavenly Rooster of Dusu Mountain was crowing loudly and making all the roosters on earth crow along with it. This crowing would result in scaring all evil spirits away. 36. Which brings wealth and energy of abundance? A. Crane. B. Rooster. C. Goldfish. D. Magpie. 37. The symbol Magpie is said to bring ______ into our lives. A. harmony B. evil spirits C. settling energy D. a wish for advancement 38. The passage is most likely to be found in ______. A. a storybook B. a culture column C. a technical report D. a fashion magazine B A recent study has found that being exposed to low temperatures creates more good fat which burns calories in the body. Being cold imitates the effects of exercise, protecting against obesity and improving health. The researchers have discovered that exposure to cold changes the make-up of gut(肠道)bacteria, which can lead to fat-burning, improve glucose metabolism(葡萄糖代谢), and reduce body weight. While ordinary white fat, known as bad fat, piles on when we eat more calories than we burn, brown fat seems to burn extra calories to produce heat. Babies have lots of brown fat—they need it to keep warm—but there are small amounts in the necks of adults, too. Studies have shown that staying in a cold environment can accelerate the formation of more brown fat in the body. Researchers predict the health benefits of being exposed to cold may be linked to gut bacteria. They exposed the first group of mice to cold temperature of 6℃ for up to 10 days and discovered this caused a major shift in the make-up of the mice's gut microbes, preventing the mice from gaining weight. Then, the gut bacteria were transplanted into the second group of mice that did not have the gut microbes. It was found that they improved glucose metabolism and increased tolerance to cold temperatures. The mice also lost weight as the changes in gut bacteria promoted the formation of brown fat. However, after three weeks of cold exposure, the body weight began to remain stable. Professor Mirko Trajkovski of the University of Geneva claims that they provide powerful evidence that gut microbes play a key role in people's ability to adapt to the environment. They are excited about testing whether targeting gut microbes could be a promising approach for preventing obesity and related conditions. 39. What’s the new finding of a recent study? A. Being cold helps people lose weight. B. Exercise can make people become fat. C. Good fat has nothing to do with calories. D. Gut bacteria will stop glucose metabolism. 40. What do we know about the brown fat? A. It’s usually considered as bad fat. B. It will fail to produce in cold bodies. C. It can't be found in the bodies of adults. D. It burns more calories in low temperatures. 41. With the gut bacteria, the second group of mice ______. A. kept losing weight continually B. had much less brown fat in the body C. gained better ability to stand the cold D. produced more gut microbes in the body C Reading is a great way to improve your English. You'll learn new words, revise previously-taught structures and absorb thousands of useful expressions and phrases... without any effort. By reading, you are receiving valuable language input. And this is how you learn! Remember, language learning is a combination of input + practice. As you're reading, you're taking in language naturally, and you're seeing how it all fits together. This is crucial to your learning. The great thing about reading is that learning takes place at the same time. There are no exercises to do, no grammar rules to learn, no tasks to complete... it's all natural. The language flows in through your eyes, and gets registered(记录) in your brain. What could be easier? The key to effective reading is to read things that you want to read. There are millions of books, magazines and websites out there. You couldn't possibly read them all. So, the important thing is to find things that you like reading. Then, you'll be motivated to read. And then the reading won't be difficult. It'll be easy! And then you'll learn. It's simple. Remember: read what you want to read. What you like reading. What motivates and inspires you. But where can you start? Well, you could read a book that you've already read in your own language. Simply find a translated version of a book that you have read and enjoyed. This will make processing the content in the target language much easier as you’ll already know what the book is about! You could also read the news. This is great as you can read the news in your own language first, then in English. You'll see that it won't be too difficult as you'll be familiar with the topics and stories. Magazines are also great. Find one that covers a topic you're interested in: business, clothing, guns, horses, houses, housekeeping, stocks and shares, sports, computers, electronics, designing, cooking... you name it, they'll have it. If not, look for information on the internet. There are also websites for every topic under the sun! Why not join a forum? They're a great source of English input as the language is often written in a simple, spoken style. Go to Google Groups, which has discussion groups based on common interests. Just type in the topic that interests you and join the chat. Finally, how you read is also important. The best thing is to read without using a dictionary. Let the words flow over you. Just skip the parts you don't understand. If you make your reading feel too much like work, it'll stop being fun. Of course, you could make a note of any new words and phrases that you like or see repeated frequently, but try not to break your concentration too much. Also, set yourself mini-objectives. For example, if you're reading a novel, read 20 pages a day. Very soon, you'll have been exposed to thousands of useful phrases and words. Have fun reading! You'll learn so much! 42. The underlined word “crucial” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to ______. A. easy B. important C. difficult D. suitable 43.You can start to read by _______. A. reading a book that you've already read in English B. reading the news in English first C. going to Google Groups to practice spoken English D. reading magazines containing topics you are interested in 44. ""No, but I'll recognize it, there was a picture in the magazine. " "Oh, stop. There it is! " The museum was free. We entered, excited. A group of people sitting in the hall stopped talking and stared at us. "May I help you?" a man asked. "No, "I said. "We're fine. " Tour guides got on my nerves. This time, we stayed together, in case anything else unusual happened. Thirty years later, a woman approached me in a public place. "Excuse me, did you ever enter a residence, long ago, thinking it was the McNay Museum?” "Yes. But how do you know? We never told anyone. " "That was my home. I was a teenager sitting in the hall. Before you came over, I never realized what a beautiful place I lived in. I never felt lucky before. You thought it was a museum. My feelings about my home changed after that. His teacher scolded him without finding out the hidden truth, which makes David feel upset and at a loss what to do. Nobody wants to be misunderstood. However, our pride sometimes makes the situation worse by refusing to explain the reason. What we need to do first is to find a chance to talk to our teachers in person and tell them the truth. Another suggestion is that next time when we come across a similar situation ,try to find a practical solution actively instead of letting our negative feelings take charge of our mind. Remember our failure to solve the problem might affect our mood and our teachers’ as well.查看更多
