So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell a miracle here, child. I’m sorry.” the salesman said with a smile. “Listen, if it isn’t enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.” A well-dressed man heard this and asked, “What kind of miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” she answered with her eyes full of tears. “He’s really sick and mum says he needs an operation. When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the teacher said, “Have you noticed all the nice-looking expensive cups were taken, leaving behind the cheap ones? It’s OK for you to want only the best for yourselves, but that is why you have the stress in your work and life even if you’re very successful now.” “All of you really wanted the coffee, not the cups, but you chose the best cups and were eyeing each other’s cups.” “Now think about this: life is the coffee, and money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold life. They do not change the quality (质量) of life. Sometimes, we just care about the cups, and we fail to enjoy the coffee. So, don’t let the cups drive you, enjoy the coffee instead.” 8. The students who visited the teacher ______. A. the cups B. the coffee C. life D. money and position D Some scientists say that animals in the oceans are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings. The noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions, ocean drilling and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves. Decibels (分贝) measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninetyfive would have the same effect. Some scientists have suggested setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in the oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales (鲸鱼). A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales' ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected (被感染的). Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds are against a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research. Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists don't think that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean. 12. According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures? A.the sound of cars. B.the sound of voices. C.manmade noise pollution.D.the sound of steps. 13.According to the passage, natural sounds include all of the following EXCEPT________. A.sounds made by animals themselves B.ocean drilling C.underwater earthquakes D.the breaking of ice fields 14.Which of the following is discussed in the third paragraph? A.The same noise level produces a different effect on land and in the ocean. B.Different places may have different types of noises. C.The decibel is not a right unit (单位) for measuring underwater noise. D.Different ocean animals may have different reactions to noises. 15.According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future? A.They will work hard to reduce ocean noise pollution. B.They will protect animals from harmful noises. C.They will try to set a limit of 120 decibels. D.They will study the effect of ocean noise pollution. 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Getting along with parents Mom and dad are the most important people in your life, and they’re likely to influence you more than anyone else in your lifetime. It’s a parent’s job to love and guide kids, and most parents will do this as long as they live. 16 Here are four ways you can stay close, get along, and build a strong relationship. Spend time together. It might be easy to be physically in the same place with your mom and dad. 17 Instead of playing a computer game or watching TV by yourself, maybe you should ask your mom and dad to play with you. You can go outside together, try a board game, or read a book together. 18 Many kids say they would like their parents to help them when they’re upset. But your mom and dad might not know that you’re having a problem. Tell your parents if you’re sad or struggling with something. If you don’t usually do this, give it a try and you will be glad. Be kind. Little things might mean a lot to your mom and dad. 19 It’s also lovely when a kid offers to help fold the laundry or cleans up his or her room without being asked. And if you try not to fight with your brothers or sisters, your parents might be so excited! Show your care. Some families are always kissing, hugging, and saying “I love you”. 20 In addition to kisses and hugs, kids and parents can show their love by respecting each other, being caring, polite, and thoughtful. A. But how much time do you spend just enjoying each other’s company(陪伴)? B. It’s important to show that you care for each other. C. But parents do a lot more than just pass down their hobbies. D. Share your feelings and ask for help. E. Talk on the phone and email each other to stay in touch. F. You can brighten your parents’ day with a hug, a card or a joke. G. That means you have many years to share with your mom and dad. 第二部分 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面的短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项中(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。 Charlotte was in her late 50s when she developed cancer.
